The European Union welcomes the appointment of the ASEAN Special Envoy on Myanmar, Brunei’s Foreign Minister Erywan Yusof. We support ASEAN’s efforts in finding a peaceful solution to the current crisis and stress the need to implement quickly and faithfully the five-point consensus adopted by ASEAN Leaders at their summit on 24 April 2021.

The European Union stands firmly with the people of Myanmar and is ready, with ASEAN’s other partners, to assist the Special Envoy in helping Myanmar chart a way back towards democracy. This can only be achieved if all actors respect the will of the people and cooperate in full with the work conducted by the Special Envoy.

In accordance with the other commitments in the ASEAN five-point consensus, meaningful political dialogue remains key with all stakeholders including the Committee Representing the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), the National Unity Government (NUG), ethnic groups and other pro-democracy forces committed to working towards a peaceful resolution of the current crisis. In this spirit, the EU expects the military authorities to release those detained in connection with the coup and to end the violence across the country.

Humanitarian aid is urgently needed. The military authorities must ensure rapid, safe and unhindered access to all refugees, displaced persons and people in need. The European Union stands ready to provide assistance to tackle the humanitarian crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic: access to COVID-19 vaccinations, testing and clinical care must be open to all in need. Tackling the ongoing health crisis must be one area where all can work together for the good of the people of Myanmar.
