The Science and Technology Information Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-STII) is shifting, transforming, and accelerating science information and communication as it turns 34 on 24 June 2021.

After 34 years from its creation, DOST-STII shifted its science information and communication efforts to high gear by introducing the Science and Technology Academic Research- Based Openly Operated Kiosk or STARBOOKS and establishing DOSTv to engage more Filipinos in promoting science, technology, and innovation (STI) in the country’s bid towards inclusive growth.

Coincidentally, STARBOOKS is celebrating its 10th year anniversary, another milestone for DOST-STII of bringing STI information closer to the people.

DOSTv, on the other hand, continues to broadcast science-based information by using social media in a more entertaining and informative way. Prior to the pandemic, the DOSTv programs are aired in PTV-4 and can also be heard over the radio as DOSTv sa Radyo. DOSTv is now in its fifth year of bringing relevant and highly informative content to a broader audience.

Both STARBOOKS and DOSTv are included in the National Economic and Development Authority’s 2021 National Priority Plan, which entitles the programs to receive and use private sector donations to strengthen its implementation.

In a simple yet meaningful celebration, DOST-STII will look back at its early years as the marketing arm of the DOST and the bridge between the traditional media and scientists.

Now, DOST-STII has transformed science communication and has strengthened its social media presence as a strategic medium in informing the public on the latest information and breakthroughs in science, technology, and innovation.

Recently, DOST Philippines, the official DOST social media page, has been verified by Facebook and was given the blue badge signifying “that this page is an authentic Page for this public figure, media company or brand.“

Also, DOST-STII has transformed its face-to-face seminars into virtual services amid quarantine restrictions to continuously provide S&T knowledge and information, and capabilities at the comfort of one’s home.

And into the next 34 years of service to the Filipinos, DOST-STII is accelerating the growth of new and exciting science communication programs that will equip and produce the new breed of science communicators who are inspired by the vibrant science communication ecosystem in the country.

“Science information diffusion and communication is the lifeblood of DOST-STII,” said DOST-STII director Richard P. Burgos. “In line with that, we are pursuing a grander plan that will make science, technology, and innovation in the country a staple public service where everyone can partake in a buffet of government services laid out on the table.”
