Ever since I set foot on this earth, I have been questioned countless times as to why I only speak English, and not Filipino —I am Filipino after all, aren’t I?
I’ve realized that there are various languages or expressions of patriotism as there are five languages of love. The most common, as well as usually thought of as the only way to be Filipino, is SPEAKING it. I believe this isn’t the only way to be patriotic because what’s the use of speaking Filipino if you don’t protect the Philippine culture, history, territory, and sovereignty?
One can also promote their homeland through vessels like LITERATURE, ART, and MUSIC — even while speaking a foreign language. Important historical figures like Jose Rizal and the Luna brothers studied abroad and spoke foreign languages; they were globalising their love for their country. One of the Philippines’ literary classics, “Noli Me Tangere,” was originally written in Spanish by Jose Rizal. Why? Because, in order for it to be read by people from around the world, it had to be written in a language they understand. We can’t just wait for everyone to speak Filipino. We must bring the Philippines to them, not wait for them to come here.
So far, I’ve covered only two “languages of patriotism” and I’m certain that there are many more expressions of patriotism that I haven’t thought of or discussed in this article.
How about you, what is your expression of patriotism?
