The Philippine College of Emergency Medicine (PCEM), with the help of HealthSolutions Enterprises Inc. (HealthSolutions), kicked off their 10th anniversary with their virtual annual convention “Current: Emerging Trends in EM Practice”. The convention covered various topics on emergency medicine (EM), and the new, effective ways doctors and medical practitioners are treating critical emergency cases. The convention was held from April 26-27 via Zoom.
PCEM invited over 20 speakers to share their expertise and insights at the 2-day convention. Among them were Pfizer speakers Dr. Guinevere Dy-Agra for “Methylprednisolone for Asthma” and Dr. Gerard Dela Cruz for “Pain Management with Parecoxib”; Biomerieux panelists Dr. Satheesh Thangaraj, Dr. Eden Lasala, Dr. Albert Rafanan, and Dr. Marion Kwek for “Diagnostic Tools for the Management of COVID-19 Patients”; Unilab Biomedis speaker Dr. Eric SM. Talens for “Improving Survival In Trauma – Tranexamic Acid in 2021”; Astra Zeneca speaker Dr. Ariel Miranda for “Anti-Platelet Management of ACS Philippine Perspective”; and Abbott speaker Dr. Paul Jarvis for “Improving the Emergency Department with Point of Care Testing.”
Other notable topics covered were how to manage forensic evidence in cases of emergency, learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the new normal, and damage control resuscitation. The invited speakers also touched on how to address mental health during the pandemic, orthopedic emergencies, how to communicate effectively with patients, and common palliative care during emergencies. Finally, they also spoke about post-bariatric surgery emergencies, establishing and creating EMS modules, marine envenomation management, hyperbaric oxygen therapy for COVID-19, and emergency sepsis care and septic shock in adults.
The goal of the convention was to help share the latest trends in EM and educate all the participants – composed primarily of EM students and practitioners – on the findings and observations made in line with these trends.
PCEM President Dr. Pauline Convocar closed the convention by announcing PCEM’s coffee-table book project for their 10thanniversary. She revealed that the theme of the coffee-table book is “Emergency Medicine in the Philippines: Generations of Bridging Healthcare Across the Islands and the Entire Nation.”
“We affirm the critical role of our human workforce holding the front during the pandemic, as we stand together protecting the frail healthcare system from collapsing,” Convocar stressed in her speech. “We ask that you add your voice to documenting what we’ve been through [as well as] the impact to the practice of EM in our country and even globally. Let us write our history together.”
