“I would rather die, than go back to the memories of my past”. This is how one of my coaching clients used to think, and is what he’s fighting hard to be completely free from, today.
Aahhh… the past. Why do people get stuck there? What’s so bad about lingering in old, hurtful memories, too? Isn’t the present what’s important? Some people would even say, it’s better to, “… just forget about the past and move on”. After all,
Well, moving on is definitely necessary.
It’s true. The present is most important. Don’t be confused, though. Everyone needs to live in the present, but moving on and leaving the past behind doesn’t mean, self-induced amnesia.
Think about a party. If you jogged and played paintball the whole morning and got all sticky and sweaty with paint on your arms and face (I know. You most probably don’t play paintball. Just stay with me here; I’m making a point) you’d need to take a nice bath first to cleanse all that gunk away even before you prepare for your party and meet people. Right? You just need to do this, even if you don’t feel like it. This is the only way you can be sure to be confident enough to mingle and be close to others, after all. Otherwise, you’ll keep on thinking about how paint can still be found on your skin, or your pungent smell at some point during the party. You wouldn’t want to possibly need to constrain yourself with the number of people you get in contact with.
The same goes for happiness and peace of mind. If you want to get to this end goal, you have to let go of life’s grime — hurt feelings, fears, and insecurities. Forgive others, and forgive yourself; accept the situation you are in and be thankful for the opportunity to find a way to get out of any sticky situation. It’s the only way to be cleansed so you can confidently move and live your life to the fullest. Obviously, disappointments and heartaches happen in everyone’s lifetime. That’s just the way it is. Again, be thankful for all your experiences because it is only through these that you can genuinely grow in confidence and strength. Sure, it is through these that people can also develop fears and anxieties, but you have a choice to grow in strength or in fear. There is so much to live for. Don’t allow frailties to fool you. Weaknesses are around so you can find your strengths behind them. There’s always strength behind any flaw. Believe it and you can definitely find yourself happy and at peace.
