Since its first launch in 2000, the ASP Angels Walk for Autism, a long-running initiative of ASP, has grown into a collective call to action, bringing together communities nationwide across Metro Manila, Bacolod, Baguio, Butuan, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Lipa, Lucena, Olongapo, Tuguegarao, and Virac. 

“This year’s walk is about moving beyond awareness,” said ASP Chair Emerita Dang Koe. “We are spotlighting talents on the spectrum who are reaching for the stars with ambition and purpose while pushing for an Autism-OK Philippines where everyone is valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.”

At the walk’s Metro Manila leg at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte was conferred with the Hans T. Sy Leadership Award for Autism Inclusion and Welfare. Book Nook was awarded the ASP Autism Works Employer of the Year. The ASP Autism Angel Achievement Awards, nicknamed A5, were also awarded to Cid Tampo, Rhav Lomboy, and Peggy Geiser, who garnered medals at the ASEAN Autism Games.

“We reflect on years of walking side by side in keeping with the theme ‘Aumbitious. Aarangkada. Aangat.’ towards a shared goal: impactful inclusivity. This journey calls us to evolve—turning aspirations into meaningful, transformative action,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan.

Across the country, advocates renewed calls for the passage of the National Autism Care, Support, and Inclusion Bill, which seeks to institutionalize access to services, strengthen coordinated support systems, and ensure lifelong inclusion. The proposed measure aims to address persistent gaps in education, healthcare, employment, and community support.

According to WHO data, some 1 in 100 are on the autism spectrum. Current legislation seeks to institutionalize access to services, strengthen support systems, and ensure lifelong inclusion for Filipinos on the autism spectrum to address gaps in education, healthcare, and employment. At least 26 counterpart measures to the National Autism Care, Support, and Inclusion Act remain pending in the House of Representatives’ Committee on Health as of this writing. 

The annual walk, set at 7 a.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and in key cities across the country, has become one of the largest platforms for advancing autism inclusion, bringing together communities to push for concrete policy action.

Advocates say the proposed legislation aims to institutionalize access to services, strengthen coordinated support systems, and ensure lifelong inclusion for Filipinos on the autism spectrum, estimated at 1 in 100 nationwide.

However, at least 26 counterpart measures remain pending at the House Committee on Health.

“The government has made strides for the disability sector, but there remains an opportunity to further strengthen public services for the autism community. Filipinos on the spectrum and their families will benefit from responsive systems and policies that promote acceptance, provide meaningful accommodations, and celebrate their strengths, enabling them to fully thrive,” said Mona Magno-Veluz, National Spokesperson of the ASP.

“We need a government with a plan to address the needs of our growing and aging community, from the national government to the LGUs,” she added.

Organized in partnership with SM Cares, the nationwide walk will span Metro Manila, Bacolod, Baguio, Butuan, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Lipa, Lucena, Olongapo, Tuguegarao, and Virac, highlighting both awareness and action.

Advocates stress that inclusion must translate into tangible opportunities — through accessible education, meaningful employment, and stronger collaboration between public and private sectors.

“It is important to sustain efforts that improve the well-being of Filipinos on the autism spectrum,” said Engr. Junias Eusebio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Operations.

“Working hand in hand with the government and organizations like the ASP, we build disability-inclusive spaces and make equitable employment possible so those on the spectrum can thrive,” Eusebio said.

Actress and advocate Michelle Dee underscored the need for sustained support systems that empower families and individuals on the spectrum.

“Responsive autism policy strengthens families by reducing everyday barriers. It shifts the narrative from dependence to empowerment — equipping families with the tools, opportunities, and dignity,” said Dee, ASP’s Goodwill Ambassador.

“Inclusion means making sure they are seen, supported, and not left to do this alone,” she added.

Since its launch in 2000, the ASP Angels Walk has evolved from an awareness campaign into a nationwide movement for inclusion and policy reform.

“Since it began in 2000, the ASP Angels Walk for Autism has always carried hope,” said ASP Chair Emerita Dang Koe. “But hope must evolve into — not just awareness or acceptance — but action.”

The Innsbruck Nature Film Festival (INFF), one of Europe’s most respected platforms for environmental cinema, officially made its Asian debut with the first Manila Edition held at SM Mall of Asia Cinema from 30 November to 2 December 2025. The three-day festival featured free screenings of award-winning nature and environmental films from Austria, offering Filipino audiences stories on biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability.

Austrian Ambassador to the Philippines Johann Brieger led the opening ceremony on 1 December, describing the festival as a meaningful cultural collaboration between Austria and the Philippines. He emphasized the connection between culture and nature, noting that while many Filipinos associate Austria with “The Sound of Music,” the festival presents a deeper look into the country through its landscapes and biodiversity.

Established in 2002 in Tyrol and Innsbruck, the INFF has become an influential international film competition, attracting filmmakers from around the world for its focus on nature, ecology, sustainability, and artistic storytelling.

In his message, Ambassador Brieger also underscored the importance of including Filipino conservation stories, citing the documentary “Iyo ang Dagat” by Sally Snow and LAMAVE. He reminded students attending the event that environmental stewardship is personal, communal, and deeply local, and that the youth hold the responsibility to champion lasting climate action.

SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin welcomed the partnership, noting that the festival aligns with SM’s commitments to sustainability and community engagement. The event also received support from Perkin So, Senior Assistant Vice President for Operations of SM Mall of Asia, and Dolly Rose S. Manalang, Executive Director of the National University–MOA Campus, along with faculty members and students.

Guests were treated to a screening of “Wild Innsbruck” by Patrick Centurioni, a documentary that explores the natural world surrounding Innsbruck. INFF Biodiversity Advisor Stefanie Pontasch, who flew in from Austria, shared insights into the film and its ecological message.

A short talk and panel discussion on nature filmmaking followed, featuring Pontasch and Titus Cañete of LAMAVE, offering perspectives on conservation storytelling and the role of film in environmental advocacy.

The Innsbruck Nature Film Festival – Manila Edition was organized by the Austrian Embassy in Manila in partnership with SM Supermalls, SM Cinema, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, with support from the Philippine Sustainability Movement, Pristine Solutions, and LAMAVE.

His songs often address themes of immigration, inequality, and resistance, making him a voice for the marginalized. His upcoming concerts in the Philippines are not just about music—they carry a powerful message of conservation and community empowerment.

A Concert with a Cause: Raising Awareness for the Palawan Pangolin

Organized by The Pangolin Sound Project, this tour combines music and environmental advocacy, using live performances as a platform to highlight urgent conservation efforts. Manu Chao’s participation reinforces the project’s mission to engage audiences while drawing attention to the plight of endangered species and fragile ecosystems.

In collaboration with SM Supermalls and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), this event will shed light on the Palawan pangolin (Manis culionensis)—a critically endangered species endemic to the Philippines. Often referred to as a natural pest controller, this elusive creature is under severe threat due to poaching and habitat loss. The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), in partnership with local organizations, has been leading conservation initiatives to protect the species, with The Pangolin Sound Project amplifying these efforts through music and storytelling.

By aligning with The Save from Extinction campaign, this event not only brings world-class music to the Philippines but also strengthens collective efforts to safeguard biodiversity through education, art, and collaboration.

Cultural Exchange and Community Engagement

As part of the concert activities, the Embassy of Spain and Instituto Cervantes have organized a special visit by Manu Chao to Barangay Tejeros in Manila. This community recently underwent a vibrant artistic transformation with a large-scale mural by Spanish collective Boa Mistura, featuring the word ‘Unyon’ (meaning ‘Union’).

During his visit, Manu Chao will perform an intimate acoustic session for the residents, celebrating the power of music and art to connect people across cultures. This initiative underscores the ongoing collaboration between Spanish institutions and Filipino communities, reinforcing the importance of cultural exchange and social impact.

A Unique Open-Air Experience in El Nido

The El Nido concert at Kalye Artisano will offer a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience, celebrating Filipino culture, sustainability, and craftsmanship in a breathtaking outdoor setting. The event will also feature special performances by DJ Cous Cous and Mike the Wolf, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

During his speech, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines’ First Secretary and Director of the Japan Information and Culture Center Mr. Shigehiro MATSUDA expresses how the exquisite artistry and beautiful arrangements of Ikebana capture the essence of the Christmas season. 

“We believe in the power of art to connect hearts and bridge generations and culture. This event not only celebrates the beauty of Ikebana but also serves as a bridge that connects our cultures and strengthens the bonds of friendship between our nations,” Director Matsuda said.

Matsuda also wishes that everyone will embrace the spirit of Ikebana, sharing love, compassion and goodwill; not just this holiday season but always.
