Tooth sensitivity, or pangingilo in vernacular can make daily activities, like eating and drinking uncomfortable, and worst, unbearable. That tingling sensation brought about by pangingilo can be triggered when consuming something cold, hot, or sugary. While most people would immediately react by avoiding these foods and drinks, it’s just a temporary solution. It’s crucial to address the real cause of ngilo.

8 out of 10 Filipinos suffer from pangingilo, but many don’t take action as the sensation comes and goes. Some don’t even know that they have tooth sensitivity, while others would choose to endure the pain.

“Kapag masakit ang ngipin, hindi ka na makatrabaho nang maayos. Mawawala ako sa wisyo. Wala na ‘kong paki sa mundo. Nakaka-distract talaga,” said Jess, Inner Sense: In Home interview.

But ignoring that feeling na parang kinukuryentesa ngipin” can lead to expensive and serious dental problems. Addressing pangingilo as soon as possible is crucial for better oral health.

What is tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity, or pangingilo, occurs when the tooth’s outer protective layer—the enamel—wears down or numinipis over time.

Among the causes ng pagnipis ng protective layer ng ngipin ay ang madiin na pagsipilyo gamit ang hard-bristled o matigas na toothbrush. Another reason for developing pangingilo ay ang pag-consume ng maraming acidic or matamis na pagkain at inumin, tulad ng softdrinks at candy or chocolate.

Why should tooth sensitivity be addressed ASAP?

If someone experiences tooth sensitivity and ignores it, mas lalala ang problema. Every time they eat or drink something na mainit, malamig, matamis, or acidic, patuloy lang mararamdaman ang pangingilo, dahil hindi nasusulusyunan ng tama ang sanhi nito. . If this isn’t addressed asap, mas lalaki pa ang problema at gastos ng pagpapagamot.

Can regular toothpaste address sensitivity?

Hindi lahat ng toothpaste ay formulated to protect against pangingilo. Importante na hanapin ang toothpaste na formulated with potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride, like Sensodyne. Itong mga ingredients na ito ay makakatulong para ma-soothe ang ngipin from pangingilo and prevent cavities.

It’s also important to continue using Sensodyne twice daily, kahit wala na ang pangingilo. This is because Sensodyne acts as a barrier between the teeth and hot, cold, sugary, and acidic food and drinks, effectively keeping pangingilo from coming back.

Educating Filipinos about pangingilo

To help more Filipinos address their pangingilo, Sensodyne began the first leg of its “Sensitive Ka? Mag-Sensodyne Na! Caravan” at the SM Mall of Asia on January 28, 2024, during the Philippine Dental Association’s (PDA) 20th National Dental Health Month celebration. Participants had their teeth checked at Sensodyne’s Free Dental Checkup and Tooth Sensitivity Awareness booths, where they also joined fun games and won prizes.

The “Sensitive Ka? Mag-Sensodyne Na! Caravan,” in partnership with PDA, will run until April 2024 and visit various locations across the Philippines upang magpalaganap ng impormasyon on how to take better care of one’s teeth, lalo na kapag may pangingilo, magbigay ng free dental checkup at free samples.

The Caravan will soon make its way to Pasay, Caloocan, Baguio City, Dagupan City, Tuguegarao City, Cabanatuan City, Batangas City, Legaspi City, Cebu City, Iloilo City, Cagayan de Oro City, Davao City.

“Our purpose is to really deliver everyday health for humanity, and our consumers and shoppers are people that we serve. We want to make sure that we deliver healthy, longer, and happier lives for Filipino families,” said Jeffrey Go, General Manager, Haleon Philippines, Inc.

Sensodyne offers protective dental support, guarding teeth against pangingilo and cavities, while also freshening breath and strengthening teeth with its advanced cleaning properties. “Kaya naman kapag nangingilo ka, i-Sensodyne mo,” said Tracee Maristela, Oral Health Care Lead, Haleon Philippines, Inc.

Sensodyne is available at leading supermarkets and drugstores nationwide. Ngayon, mas abot-kaya na ang Sensodyne Fresh Mint at Sensodyne Deep Clean at Php 99 SRP. Sensodyne can also be purchased on Lazada (https://bit.ly/SensodynePHLaz) and Shopee (https://bit.ly/SensodynePHShopee).

Maker of Centrum, Stresstabs, Caltrate, Sensodyne and Polident becomes one of the world’s leading independent consumer health companies. Demerger from GSK plc (GSK) now complete

From left, Filippo Lanzi, President, EMEA and LATAM, Haleon Mairéad Nayager, Chief Human Resources Officer, Haleon Jooyong Lee, Head of Strategy and Office of the CEO, Haleon Franck Riot, Chief R&D Officer, Haleon Teri Lyng, Head of Transformation and Sustainability, Haleon Tobias Hestler, Chief Financial Officer, Haleon Brian McNamara, Chief Executive Officer, Haleon Sir Dave Lewis, Chairman, Haleon Amy Landucci, Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Haleon Bjarne Philip Tellmann, General Counsel, Haleon Tamara Rogers, Chief Marketing Officer, Haleon Bart Derde, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Haleon Dana Bolden, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Haleon

Haleon (LSE/NYSE: HLN) launches as an independent company 100% focused on consumer health, completing its demerger from GSK. The newly listed business is driven by its purpose to deliver better everyday health with humanity.

Trading commenced on Monday on the London Stock Exchange (LSE), with Brian McNamara, CEO of Haleon, leading the opening ceremony to signal the start of trading. Trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is set to follow1, and a similar market-opening event will take place on Wednesday 20 July 2022.

Haleon has a world-class portfolio of brands including Centrum, Polident and Sensodyne, and will continue to develop category leading brands that address real consumer health needs, while focusing on future innovation across its entire portfolio.

With an increased consumer focus on health and wellness, an ageing global population, an emerging middle class in high-growth economies, growing self-care in the face of increased pressure on public healthcare systems and sizeable unmet consumer needs, Haleon has launched at a time when the consumer healthcare market is set for expansion (expected to be at a rate of 3-4% per annum over the medium-term). Haleon expects to deliver medium-term annual organic revenue growth of 4-6%.

Despite huge improvements in medicine, data and technology, everyday health remains elusive for too many people. Haleon aims to change this through a two-pronged approach. First, by working to remove barriers to better everyday health, and second, by aiming to empower 50 million people a year by 2025 to be more included in opportunities for better everyday health.

The company’s competitive advantage lies in its ability to blend deep human understanding and trusted science in the products it creates. Haleon is further distinguished by leading consumer healthcare-focused scientific capabilities, a well-developed organisational understanding of human health behaviours, strong capabilities in brand building, innovation and digital commerce and a powerful route-to-market.

The brands within the Haleon portfolio have been providing treatment and improving the quality of life for millions of consumers across the globe for decades. They have also been trusted, recognised, and recommended by healthcare professionals across multiple markets.

Brian McNamara, Chief Executive Officer, Haleon, said:

“This is a significant milestone for Haleon. Guided by our clear purpose and with a world class portfolio of brands that people know and trust, we stand ready to help address consumer needs and make better everyday health more achievable, inclusive and sustainable.

“Consumer health has never been more important than it is today, and I am delighted that Haleon, as an independent company, is ready to pursue our ambitions.

“Today follows a huge amount of effort, planning and collaboration by our dedicated colleagues all around the world.”

Jeffrey Go, General Manager, Philippines, Haleon, said:

“With strong market positions in Vitamins, Oral Care, and OTC (over-the-counter) products, we work closely with pharmacists, physicians, and retailers to increase awareness on everyday health issues and emphasize the importance of self-care. Many Filipinos have begun to pay more attention to taking care of their own health, and by creating more awareness on self-care and on key health issues such as immunity building, filling in nutrition gaps, addressing calcium deficiency, and more, we aim to make everyday health more achievable, more inclusive, and more sustainable for everyone in the Philippines.”

Haleon (pronounced “Hay-Lee-On”) was unveiled as the name of the business in February 2022 and is inspired by the merging of the words ‘Hale’, which is an old English word meaning ‘in good health’ and Leon, which is associated with the word ‘strength’.

The company’s signature “For Health. With Humanity” brings to life the essence and purpose of Haleon and was developed by its own colleagues. The signature will appear with our logo when space allows as it underscores the purpose of Haleon.

Sensodyne formulates a new clinically-proven toothpaste for Gen Z that helps beat tooth sensitivity
Launches Sensodyne new Rapid Relief that keeps up with the younger generation’s oral healthcare problem

Research has shown that as many as one in three people may suffer from tooth hypersensitivity or pangingilo, with prevalence peaking at 30 to 40 years of age. But in a study, two out of five younger adults, between 18 and 25 years old, otherwise known as “Generation Z” or “Gen-Z”, now experience the onset of tooth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is a common, irreversible problem caused by dentine exposure brought about by attrition from tooth grinding or jaw clenching, erosion from dietary acids, or abrasion from brushing too vigorously. However, it can be managed with proper dental hygiene.

“The youth of today enjoy a dynamic lifestyle. They are highly mobile and always multitasking. As such, oral health may not always be a top priority. In fact, more than 50% of them do not consult their dentist on problems such as tooth sensitivity and find ways to work around it instead,” says Michael Mallari, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Philippines Expert Sales Manager. “However, for Filipino Gen Zers, who constantly connect with friends and family through shared meals, experiencing pangingilo is a major distraction and a problem that needs to be addressed. Instead of enjoying and being able to try out new food, they experience pain and discomfort that takes their attention away from the moments that matter.”

In a recent event dubbed “Face the Race”, leading oral healthcare brand Sensodyne, launched the new Sensodyne Rapid Relief toothpaste which provides sufferers with speed and efficiency in beating tooth sensitivity. “We understand that bonding over meals is a culturally intrinsic activity and is highly valued among Filipino youths,” says Ritesh Pandey, GlaxoSmithKline Philippines Consumer Healthcare General Manager. “With Sensodyne Rapid Relief, those who suffer from pangingilo can experience immediate relief from the first time they brush so they can continue enjoying their food-bonding experiences with minimal distraction from their teeth.”

Tooth sensitivity is a dental condition that causes discomfort or pain in teeth when encountering certain substances and temperatures. It occurs when the dentine underneath the tooth enamel becomes exposed, revealing small holes called tubules.

When the fluid inside these tiny tubules encounters something cold, hot, sweet, or sour, it can trigger the nerves inside the tooth and cause a short, sharp pain.

When used as directed, the unique technology in Sensodyne Rapid Relief toothpaste offers fast relief and long lasting protection to beat sensitivity. It has an active ingredient called stannous fluoride which enables faster blockage of the tubules. It also has an optimised polymer system that creates a gel-like scaffold which holds the stannous fluoride in place, preventing it from being washed away in the mouth.

The Sensodyne Rapid Relief toothpaste retails at P208 SRP and is available at leading stores nationwide. For more information about Sensodyne Rapid Relief, visit sensodyne.com.ph.
