SUBIC BAY, Philippines — The Philippines and Denmark kicked off the celebration of 80 years of diplomatic relations with a strong push toward maritime security, defense cooperation, and sustainability, marked by the unveiling of a commemorative logo aboard the Philippine Navy’s guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar on April 7.

Held at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, the ceremony reflected how a relationship rooted in post-war diplomacy has evolved into a multi-dimensional partnership spanning maritime security, trade, renewable energy, and people-to-people ties.

Anchored on the theme “Partners for a Sustainable Future,” Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Director for European Affairs Ferdinand Flores, said the milestone highlights both enduring friendship and forward-looking cooperation.

“What began as formal diplomatic engagement has grown into a multifaceted relationship spanning maritime cooperation, trade and investment, renewable energy, and people-to-people exchanges,” the DFA official said.

The DFA emphasized that shared principles continue to underpin bilateral ties.

“We have cultivated a partnership founded on shared values—respect for international law, commitment to multilateralism, and a common aspiration for peace, stability, and sustainable development.”

The maritime domain emerged as a central pillar of cooperation, particularly as both nations navigate climate and security challenges.

“As maritime nations, our countries share a deep connection to the seas… With the ever present challenges of climate change, our collaboration in offshore wind, energy efficiency, and environmental stewardship has taken on even greater significance,” Flores added.

Meanwhile, Danish Ambassador Franz-Michael Mellbin traced the partnership’s roots to the post-war global order, stressing its continued relevance.

“We were amongst the first wave of nations to recognise the Philippines… as founding members of the United Nations, coming together after the chaos of World War II to build a rules-based system,” Mellbin said.

He highlighted the maritime sector as a long-standing anchor of relations, particularly the role of Filipino seafarers in Danish shipping.

“Denmark is a great seafaring nation… and the Philippines is the largest crewing country in the world. That relationship has been a great mainstay of our relations.”

Mellbin also pointed to expanding engagement, including the planned deployment of a maritime attaché at the Danish Embassy in Manila to further strengthen cooperation in maritime and defense sectors.

On the Philippine side, Ambassador Pablito Mendoza reaffirmed shared commitments to multilateralism and sustainable development, noting the resilience of bilateral ties despite geographic distance.

The defense dimension was underscored by the choice of venue, with the Philippine Navy highlighting growing opportunities for deeper collaboration.

Representing Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma Ambrosio Q Ezpeleta, Rear Admiral Juario Marayag emphasized that the partnership extends into emerging defense domains.

“We see prospects for collaboration on naval defense, cyber defense, and shipbuilding, as well as addressing threats to maritime security,” Marayag said.

He stressed the strategic importance of the maritime domain beyond geography.

“The maritime domain is more than a physical expanse, but a space where peace, stability, and freedom of navigation must be sustained… The security of our waters is inherently connected to the prosperity of our countries and people.”

Marayag added that Denmark’s strength in maritime innovation and sustainability serves as a benchmark for the Philippine Navy’s ongoing modernization.

“We find a natural partner in Denmark… as we pursue the continuing transformation of our naval forces and the furthering of our maritime capabilities.”

He said the milestone event paves the way for stronger naval engagement moving forward.

“Today’s endeavor serves as another headway for our nations and our navies to deepen engagements and guarantee safe and secure seas for the benefit of future generations.”

Beyond defense and policy, the DFA highlighted the Filipino community in Denmark as a “living bridge” that strengthens bilateral relations through enduring people-to-people ties.

Denmark was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the Philippines in 1946, helping shape a partnership grounded in shared values and international cooperation.

The anniversary year will be marked by a series of engagements across both countries throughout 2026, including cultural exchanges, business initiatives, and high-level dialogues aimed at advancing maritime security, sustainability, and defense collaboration.

Amid shifting global supply chains and rising demand for energy transition materials, the Philippine nickel industry is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the critical minerals market.

The Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) said the country remains a key supplier, with its members accounting for about 73% of national output, totaling 37.81 million dry metric tons (DMT) in 2025.

“The Philippines remains a major player in the global nickel market,” said Charmaine Olea-Capili.

Nickel demand is expected to grow steadily, driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy, and infrastructure, according to the International Energy Agency.

The Philippines, which ranks sixth in global nickel reserves, continues to supply key markets, with China accounting for 66% of exports in 2025—down from 78% in 2024 as buyers diversify sourcing.

PNIA cited opportunities from supply chain diversification, emerging market demand, and increased investments in processing. However, near-term risks include potential oversupply, evolving battery technologies, and slower EV adoption.

Recent policy reforms, including Republic Act No. 12253, are expected to improve the investment climate by providing a clearer fiscal regime.

At the same time, the industry is advancing ESG initiatives and regional cooperation, including collaboration with Indonesia to strengthen supply chains. PNIA said continued improvements in infrastructure, energy readiness, and policy alignment will be key to sustaining growth.

Southeast Asia is entering a critical period where energy security and economic stability are inseparable. A recent report by the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) warns that climate change, rising electricity demand from AI and digital infrastructure, and geopolitical tensions are putting unprecedented pressure on the region’s energy systems. For governments and businesses alike, strengthening energy resilience is no longer just a technical concern—it has become a macroeconomic necessity.

Frequent floods and typhoons continue to disrupt power grids, fuel supply chains, and logistics networks, creating ripple effects that push up costs, strain fiscal budgets, and disrupt business operations. At the same time, Southeast Asia’s rapid adoption of AI and expansion of data centers is driving electricity demand higher, projected to double by 2050. If power generation cannot scale quickly, governments may be forced to rely more heavily on fossil fuels, which could compromise climate goals and energy sustainability.

The report urges both public and private sectors to take decisive action. Key measures include investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, expanding electricity generation, strengthening transmission networks, and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy. Financial tools, such as insurance and capital-market instruments, can help manage the fiscal impact of climate shocks while supporting private sector investment in sustainable energy solutions.

For ASEAN businesses, the message is clear: proactively adapting to energy challenges is essential not only for operational stability but also for long-term competitiveness. Companies that invest in resilient, sustainable energy systems will be better positioned to weather disruptions, reduce costs, and thrive in a rapidly changing economic landscape.

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has forged a strategic partnership with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) to advance the Philippines’ nuclear energy program. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) marks a significant step toward strengthening energy security and promoting sustainable power solutions in the country.

KHNP, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Korea’s largest power generator, brings decades of nuclear expertise, while KEXIM, the state-owned export credit and financing agency, will help explore funding options for potential nuclear projects in the Philippines.

The collaboration will support Meralco’s Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) program through joint studies on reactor design, engineering, and regulatory frameworks. The partnership also aims to build local capability via training programs, employee exchanges, and technical knowledge-sharing initiatives to ensure long-term operational readiness.

Beyond technical expertise, the three organizations will work together on early-stage project development, including public acceptance programs, site selection studies, and project planning—key steps in assessing the feasibility of nuclear power in the Philippines.

Financial collaboration is also a focus. KEXIM will examine financing structures and credit facilities to support Meralco’s future nuclear projects alongside KHNP and other Korean partners.

“Nuclear energy offers the Philippines a way to diversify its power sources, strengthen energy security, and reduce vulnerability to fuel price fluctuations. Working with KHNP and KEXIM gives us access to global expertise and helps us study technology, business models, and financing options in detail. This MOU is a critical first step in our nuclear energy journey,” said Meralco Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan.

The United Kingdom and the Philippines deepened their climate and environmental cooperation at the 6th UK–Philippines Climate Change and Environment (CCE) Dialogue, with both sides committing to joint action on biodiversity, renewable energy, and climate finance.

Led by British Ambassador to the Philippines Sarah Hulton OBE and DENR Undersecretary Analiza Rebuelta-Teh, the dialogue highlighted shared priorities in strategic partnerships, science-informed resilience, biodiversity protection, and mobilizing finance for a just energy transition. The discussions coincided with the UK’s fifth year as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner and the 80th anniversary of UK–Philippines diplomatic relations.

The dialogue builds on milestones from 2025, including the localization of the Philippines’ National Adaptation Plan, support for sustainable mining, and a new partnership on marine ecosystems.

Ambassador Hulton emphasized the value of collaboration. “Our partnership with the Philippines reflects our shared commitment to tackling climate challenges. Today’s discussions lay the groundwork for transformative action, expanding access to climate and nature finance while ensuring growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand,” she said.

Both countries agreed to institutionalize the Adaptation Investment Learning Course and launch the Adaptation Investment Platform, aiming to mobilize £250 million for adaptation projects in food and water sectors.

The dialogue also addressed boosting the blue economy through Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Blue Economy Frameworks. These initiatives will support fisheries and aquaculture, advance offshore wind development, and explore new renewable energy opportunities, including tidal and wave energy.

Undersecretary Rebuelta-Teh, speaking for incoming DENR Acting Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, noted: “Our partnership is a strategic driver for mobilizing catalytic capital. The £250 million Adaptation Investment Platform bridges the financing gap for the Philippine National Adaptation Plan. By institutionalizing frameworks for the blue economy and offshore wind, we are shaping a resilient, net-zero future that protects our environment and people.”

The event also highlighted the role of capital markets in climate finance. Past successes, such as UK investment in the IPO of Citicore Renewables, show how strategic financing can attract institutional investors and scale nature-positive initiatives.

Farmers in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija now have a greener, more cost-efficient way to irrigate their fields, thanks to a solar-powered mobile irrigation system turned over by Manila Electric Company (Meralco).

The project, made possible by Meralco’s Corporate Retail Services Group, Meralco Employees’ Fund for Charity, Inc. (MEFCI), and One Meralco Foundation (OMF), provides a mobile irrigation pump equipped with a 3-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic system.

Members of the Bagong Anyo Namcu Farmers Irrigators Association Inc. previously spent around P12,000 per cropping cycle on diesel-powered pumps, with costs rising during dry seasons. With the solar system, farmers can now irrigate sustainably, improving crop quality — such as brown rice — and potentially selling yields at higher market prices.

This is the third solar irrigation system donated by Meralco’s Customer Retail Services Group to farmers in Nueva Ecija.

“We are happy to be part of projects that provide long-term assistance to our farmers. Together, let us plant the seeds for a brighter tomorrow for our families, our community, and our nation,” said Charina P. Padua, Meralco Senior VP and Head of Customer Retail Services.

Engr. Ferdinand O. Geluz, Meralco Senior VP and Chief Revenue Officer, also emphasized the initiative’s lasting impact: “We believe the cooperative can create more value from this solar system, translating into sustainable benefits for the community. This reflects our commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.”

Cuyapo Mayor Jose Hidalgo welcomed the donation, noting, “This gift from Meralco is very timely. Our farmers can use it just in time for the second cropping season.”

OMF’s Agriculture and Livelihood Electrification program is part of a broader portfolio providing solar-powered solutions for schools, water access points, and rural health centers, delivering sustainable benefits to communities across the Philippines.

The provincial government of Bataan is stepping up efforts to position the province as a hub for advanced technology manufacturing, following the successful staging of the 1Bataan Semiconductor and Electronics Summit 2025 on December 19.

The summit brought together leaders from government, industry, and academe to discuss strategies and investment opportunities aimed at building a competitive semiconductor and electronics ecosystem in the province.

In his keynote address, Trade Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo highlighted the sector’s importance to the Philippine economy, noting that semiconductor and electronics products account for more than half of the country’s merchandise exports.

“The semiconductor and electronics sector remains a cornerstone of our industrial strategy. Bataan’s proactive approach and strong fundamentals make it an attractive destination for global players,” Rodolfo said.

The summit was hosted by Rep. Maria Angela Garcia, who emphasized Bataan’s readiness to support investors through infrastructure development, policy support, and public-private collaboration.

“Bataan is prepared to provide the environment needed for high-value industries to grow—one that benefits both businesses and local communities through sustainable development,” Garcia said.

Governor Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia III presented the province’s investment proposition, citing its strategic location near major economic corridors, reliable infrastructure, skilled workforce, and ongoing investments in renewable energy and logistics. He said these strengths, combined with investor-friendly local policies, position Bataan as a competitive site for high-tech manufacturing.

Officials from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs (OSAPIEA) also expressed support for the province’s initiative, particularly in workforce development and investment facilitation.

Bataan has seen a growing presence of investment promotion agencies and major locators, supported by an enabling business environment that encourages industry expansion.

The Philippines’ semiconductor and electronics industry remains a major contributor to global supply chains, accounting for 58% of total merchandise exports, or about US$45.3 billion as of November 2025, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). Globally, the semiconductor market is projected to reach US$1 trillion by 2030, according to PwC’s Global Semiconductor Industry Outlook.

Provincial officials said Bataan will continue to focus on partnerships, workforce capability-building, and sustainable infrastructure to strengthen its role in the country’s industrial development.

Investor alignment with the government’s renewable energy agenda continued to shape merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the Philippines in 2025, with clean energy emerging as a key driver of deal flow despite a more selective investment environment.

According to Isla Lipana & Co./PwC Philippines’ Year-End M&A Report 2025, a total of 74 M&A deals were announced in the country as of December 4, 2025, amounting to US$4.6 billion in disclosed deal value. While overall deal volume moderated, investor appetite remained focused on sectors offering long-term resilience and sustainability-linked growth.

The energy and natural resources sector accounted for 29.7% of total deal volume, leading all industries, followed by consumer and retail at 14.9%, and industrials at 12.2%.

“Philippine M&A trends last year highlighted both our resilience points and opportunity strongholds,” said Trissy Rogacion, PwC Philippines M&A and Corporate Finance partner. “While deal volume was lower, transactions are taking longer to close. We expect a number of these deals to be completed early this year.”

Clean energy leads deal values

The energy and natural resources sector recorded a combined deal value of US$1.9 billion from 22 transactions, underscoring the growing investor shift toward renewable and transition energy assets.

Among the largest deals was Prime Infrastructure Capital’s US$897.5-million acquisition of First Gen assets. Manila Electric Company (Meralco) also invested US$127.6 million in SP New Energy Corporation, reflecting demand for flexible, renewable-linked power projects. Another notable transaction was SembCorp’s US$77.4-million acquisition of the Puente Al Sol solar farm in Negros Occidental.

Investor confidence continues to be reinforced by policy support, including the Philippine Energy Plan, which raised the government’s renewable energy target to 35% of total power generation by 2030, as well as incentives such as duty-free importation of renewable energy equipment.

Other sectors on investors’ radar

The real estate and infrastructure sector posted a total deal value of US$1.2 billion, with asset quality, location, and tenant mix driving transactions. Recent legislative reforms, including the Real Property Valuation and Assessment Reform Act and the Accelerated and Reformed Right-of-Way (ARROW) Act, also influenced infrastructure-related investments.

Meanwhile, the industrial sector recorded nine deals with a combined value of US$180 million, primarily involving commercial and institutional construction, as well as metal smelting and refining activities.

Outlook for 2026 and beyond

Looking ahead, the energy sector is expected to remain the primary engine of Philippine M&A activity in 2026, as both local and foreign investors expand exposure to renewable and sustainability-driven assets.

The healthcare sector is also projected to sustain deal momentum, with operators focused on expanding hospital networks nationwide amid growing demand for quality healthcare services.

“Even as investors remained strategically selective in 2025, we anticipate sustained interest across key sectors,” said Roderick Danao, PwC Philippines chairman and senior partner. “Renewable energy deals clearly drove the market last year, showing strong alignment with the government’s long-term clean energy agenda. This sets the stage for a new wave of M&A activity, particularly in the energy sector.”
