A potential ₱3-billion integrated coconut oil processing facility — designed with renewable-energy components — has emerged as one of the headline investment leads when the Philippines and Japan opened the 70th year of their diplomatic relations, with the coconut taking center stage as a platform for innovation.

THEPHILBIZNEWS FILE PHOTO

The project surfaced alongside a wave of business engagements during “The Philippine Coconut: Tree of Life, Seed of Innovation,” the flagship exhibition mounted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Tokyo at the Tokyo Midtown Design Hub.

The show officially opened the year-long 70th anniversary celebration of Philippines-Japan diplomatic ties, supported by the ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC), and the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Japan.

But the story unfolding in Tokyo went far beyond exhibits. It reframed the coconut much the way PH–Japan relations themselves have evolved: from traditional foundations into diverse, technology-driven, future-facing collaborations.

Virgin coconut oil.
Coconut, reimagined

Long associated with copra, oil, and coco lumber, the coconut is now branching into sectors that mirror Japan’s own innovation priorities in healthcare, advanced materials, pet nutrition, and clean energy.

Engagements on the sidelines of the exhibit included:

Coconut residues as agricultural fertilizers for use in Japan

Expanded sourcing of Philippine medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, including products from Chemrez Technologies

Possible cooperation programs between the Philippine Coconut Authority and Japanese counterparts

Patchmed. PHOTO FROM DOST

In healthcare, coconut-based bacterial cellulose derived from coconut water is being eyed for Japan’s growing advanced wound-care market. One example already in the Japanese market is PatchMed, whose Good Design Award-winning wound dressing is made from nata de coco and coconut water.

In pet nutrition — an unexpectedly premium and fast-growing segment in Japan — coconut-derived medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil is being explored for formulations addressing age-related cognitive decline in pets, pushing the coconut into the frontier of functional nutrition.

Meanwhile, coconut kernel shell is being positioned as a sustainable biomass feedstock, with applications ranging from renewable power generation to emerging pathways for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) — directly aligning with Japan’s decarbonization push.

Coco coir to control soil erosion. PHOTO FROM IPOPHIL

Even in disaster resilience, coconut coir geotextiles already in use in Japan for flood control, erosion mitigation, and landslide prevention show how an agricultural byproduct becomes climate infrastructure.

Relations that evolved like the coconut

The breadth of coconut applications — agriculture, design, medicine, energy — closely parallels the arc of PH-Japan relations over seven decades. What began largely with trade in primary goods has matured into cooperation in technology, sustainability, infrastructure, and advanced industries.

That shift was precisely the point of the Tokyo initiative.

“What is most important is that these are no longer theoretical possibilities,” said Dita Angara-Mathay, Commercial Counselor and Head of PTIC Tokyo.

“By deliberately convening public agencies, industry partners, designers, and technical experts within a single, coordinated framework, we were able to translate policy objectives into concrete market engagement,” she said.

Meeting in Tokyo. PHOTO FROM THE DTI

“The resulting level of market interest and follow-through affirms the evolution of the Philippine coconut — from a traditional natural resource into a platform for high-value innovation across health, nutrition, design, and clean energy. This approach is essential to sustainably raising farmer incomes and strengthening the Philippines’ position in global value chains,” she added.

Like the coconut, PH–Japan ties are no longer defined by a single “product,” but by a value chain of cooperation—from grassroots farmers to advanced research, from raw materials to high-end design and science.

Heritage meets high design meets farmers

The exhibition also connected innovation with heritage. A dedicated section on the Coconut Palace featured original watercolor renderings and blueprints by National Artist Francisco Mañosa, alongside a 3D model and virtual-reality tour. This is timely as the palace has been designated an official venue of the ASEAN 2026 Summit.

PHOTO FROM WIKIPEDIA

Award-recognized coconut-based furniture, co-created design products, food innovations, and premium spirits further demonstrated how the coconut bridges craft, culture, and contemporary industry — much like PH-Japan engagement today spans culture, commerce, and cutting-edge technology.

Behind the design hub displays are 3.5 million coconut farmers and more than 10 million Filipinos across the coconut value chain. Through participating exporters and supply-chain partners, the initiative is estimated to have reached coconut-producing areas supporting around 220,000 farm households, linking anniversary diplomacy directly to long-term income and value-chain upgrading.

In its 70th year, PH-Japan relations are being told through a familiar symbol — but in an unfamiliar way. The coconut is no longer just the “tree of life.” It is becoming a platform of innovation, just as the bilateral partnership has grown from traditional trade into a multidimensional alliance built on sustainability, science, and shared futures.

The Philippines secured about $8.13 million in confirmed and potential sales from various quality coconut-based food products during its recent debut at TuttoFood Milano, one of the most prestigious international platforms for the agrifood industry.

According to a news release from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), these coconut-based products, such as coconut oil, virgin coconut oil, coconut flour, beverages, and specialty food items, accounted for $2.25 million of total projected sales, highlighting sustained international demand for premium Philippine coconut offerings.

Trade Secretary Cristina A. Roque said that this outcome affirms the country’s strategic push into the European market.

“Our first successful participation at TuttoFood Milano clearly demonstrates how Filipino exporters can seize global opportunities,” Roque said.

FROM DTI FB PAGE

“By providing the right platform, we empower them to connect with international buyers, gain critical market insights, and secure immediate and long-term export deals, thereby elevating the Philippines’ reputation as a reliable source of high-quality, sustainable food products,” she added.

The mission also opened potential investment and technical partnerships, with the Philippine delegation engaging with 102 new potential business partners. Three exhibitors are now in advanced discussions with potential partners across Europe, the Middle East, and West Asia.

Ahead of the event, nine companies received pre-event coaching and on-site support to enhance their export strategies. They also joined trendspotting forums and networking sessions, where they gained insights into European consumer preferences, sustainability practices, and regulatory requirements.

For the participating entrepreneurs, the experience provided crucial market intelligence.

“It has provided valuable insights that will shape our future strategy—from refining our product offering and enhancing our packaging to adopting more sustainable and efficient ways of working,” said Maureen Pasciolco, an executive of Pasciolco Agri Ventures.

Meanwhile, Allison Jean Bautista of Cocoplus Aquarian Development Corp. added that the fair expanded their business outlook.

“The experience has not only enhanced our knowledge and expertise but also opened up new avenues for growth and collaboration.”

The Philippine participation was led by the DTI’s Export Marketing Bureau, in partnership with the Philippine Trade and Investment Center-Paris, the International Trade Centre’s ARISE Plus Philippines Project, and the Philippine Coconut Authority.

Other participating companies included Bahaghari Global Good Inc., Cattleya & Rose Gourmet Foods Trading, Fruits of Life, Inc., Good Sense Food and Juices Corp., Sandpiper Spices and Condiments Corp., Soyuz Foods International Inc., and Wellnesscare International Corp.

Major Saudi construction players have expressed strong interest in partnering with Filipino firms, which are then urged to adopt “strategic entry modes” to navigate the Kingdom’s regulatory environment and capitalize on booming opportunities, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in a media release.

This was the key takeaway from the Market Briefing on Opportunities and Trends in the Philippine Construction, Architecture, and Engineering (CAE) sectors, with a strategic focus on Saudi Arabia, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Philippine Overseas Construction Board (POCB) on July 1, 2025.

Held ahead of the Second Philippine Construction Business Mission to the Middle East this November, the virtual session aimed to prepare Filipino firms for the massive demand being generated by Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a transformation program projected to channel between $1.3 trillion and $3 trillion into infrastructure and urban development.

PHOTO FROM DTI WEBSITE

POCB Chairman and DMCI Holdings President Engr. Isidro A. Consunji encouraged Filipino CAE players to seize the moment, saying Saudi Arabia’s large-scale developments offer an unprecedented chance to “raise the flag of Filipino CAE excellence” and contribute to one of the most ambitious transformation agendas in the world.

“Filipino contractors have what it takes,” Consunji said, citing the country’s proven track record in world-class finishing, sustainable engineering, and innovative design.

Commercial Attaché Vince Liwanag of the DTI-Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Riyadh confirmed that “major Saudi construction players have expressed strong interest in partnering with Filipino firms.” He advised companies to consider strategic entry modes that can help them comply with Saudi Arabia’s Saudization policies and adapt to regulatory changes.

These strategic entry modes, such as forming joint ventures, consortia, or technical collaborations, are seen as critical in securing time-sensitive opportunities across mega and giga-projects such as NEOM, Red Sea Global, Qidiya, and Diriyah Gate, which together account for hundreds of billions of dollars in planned investments.

Diriyah Gate. PHOTO FROM SAUDI GOVERNMENT WEBSITE

POCB Executive Director Doris Gacho added that the briefing is part of a broader three-year campaign to strengthen the Philippine CAE sector’s footprint in high-growth markets. “We started in 2024 with the successful First Philippine Construction Business Mission to the UAE and Qatar. This year, we’re building on that momentum with a mission to Saudi Arabia, timed with Cityscape Global 2025 in Riyadh,” Gacho said.

Cityscape Global, the world’s largest real estate and urban development expo, is expected to offer extensive networking and project-sourcing opportunities for participating Filipino firms.

In his closing remarks, POCB Board Member and First Balfour CEO Anthony Paul Fernandez urged the sector to view the mission not just as a business opportunity but as a chance to elevate the Philippine CAE brand on the global stage.

With more than $1.3 trillion in construction and infrastructure projects already launched and billions more planned under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Filipino firms are well-positioned to contribute to the Kingdom’s historic transformation while expanding their own global reach.

POCB invites stakeholders to join the November mission and become key players in this Middle East boom. Interested parties may visit https://bit.ly/POCBMEMission2025 or contact POCB via POCB@construction.gov.ph.

The Philippines is stepping up efforts to position itself as a top destination for investments in waste-to-energy and renewable energy, banking on strong government support and a “red carpet, not red tape” policy for foreign firms.

In a recent high-level virtual meeting, the Asian Consulting Group (ACG) collaborated with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) Bangkok, and a Thailand-based firm to promote strategic investment opportunities in the Philippines’ growing sustainable energy sector.

Commercial Counselor Ella Burgos of PTIC Bangkok opened the session by providing an overview of the company, setting the tone for the discussion on expanding Thai investments into the Philippines. Potential Thai investors presented their plans to establish operations in the country, signaling strong interest in the opportunities available.

PEZA Director General Theo Panga welcomed the interest and pledged full support, offering to link investors with potential local partners and guide them toward viable ecozone locations.

Joining the session were ACG President and COO Hazel Mendoza and PEZA Chief of Staff Ton Melendres. ACG’s Chief Tax Advisor Mon Abrea, facilitating the meeting remotely from Washington DC, emphasized the initiative’s global reach and commitment.

“At ACG, we are proud to work alongside the Philippine government, especially the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through the PTIC and PEZA and other investment promotion agencies to foster a business environment where foreign investors experience red carpet treatment, not red tape,” Abrea said.

He added, “Building on this momentum, we look forward to our joint investment mission in London with British companies this June 23–27, as we continue promoting the Philippines as a premier and sustainable investment destination.”

Filipino exhibitors clinched $79 million worth of deals at the 2025 HIMSS Global Health Conference in Las Vegas, reflecting Philippines’ growing stature as a competitive hub for high-value business process outsourcing (BPO) services, particularly in healthcare.

The milestone deal was highlighted during a hybrid seminar on May 13 at the Consulate’s Kalayaan Hall in Chicago, hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in partnership with the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in New York (PTIC New York) and the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago.

This achievement underlines the country’s rapid rise as a reliable provider of healthcare information management services (HIMS), a key segment within the BPO industry, said the DTI in a news release.

As global demand for efficient, cost-effective healthcare solutions increases, the Philippines is strategically positioning itself as a trusted partner for US healthcare businesses seeking expertise in billing, regulatory compliance, and service delivery, said PTIC New York Trade Commissioner Benedict M. Uy.

He said the Philippine IT-BPM industry now generates about $38 billion annually and employs 1.8 million Filipinos. He said the healthcare information management is the fastest-growing segment, valued at over $4 billion, and expanding at a 9% annual growth rate supported by over 400 specialized firms.”

Uy said the Philippine government is committed to creating a globally competitive outsourcing environment, citing key initiatives like the Data Privacy Act and the CREATE MORE Law, which grants fiscal incentives to attract and sustain foreign investment.

Titled “Bridging Filipino-American Businesses and the Philippine Healthcare BPO,” the seminar drew over 45 participants, including Filipino-American owners and managers of US-based home health agencies. It formed part of DTI-PTIC New York’s broader strategy to connect US businesses, especially those with Filipino roots, to Philippine service providers.

An interactive open forum followed the discussions, with participants raising practical questions on financial savings, payment structures, taxation, and liability insurance—reflecting strong interest and growing confidence in the Philippines as a healthcare BPO destination.

The Philippines is actively seeking to strengthen its role in the global electric vehicle (EV) industry by inviting China to invest in green metals, electric vehicles, and battery manufacturing and assembly, it was learned recently.

In a news release, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said that as part of its ongoing efforts to attract foreign investments, its Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Beijing (PTIC-Beijing) participated in the 3rd China International New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Supply Chain Conference and Going Global Forum on February 21.

Through this forum, the Philippines showcased its competitive advantages within the global EV industry, emphasizing its potential as a strategic partner in sustainable mobility solutions.

The participating delegation during the 2025 China’s International New Energy Vehicle Technology, Parts and Services Exhibition. PHOTO FROM DTI

DTI said its participation in the forum aimed to bolster the country’s position within the new energy vehicle (NEV) supply chain, with a particular focus on green metals, electronics, and growing market software (GEMS) capabilities.

“The GEMS strategy leverages the country’s abundant supply of green metals such as nickel, copper, and cobalt; strengths in electronics manufacturing and software development; and access to both local and global markets,” said PTIC-Beijing Commercial Counsellor Glenn Peñaranda.

He said the country aims “to establish the Philippines as a regional hub for electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing and assembly.”

DTI said this strategy is supported by the country’s large, youthful population, which serves as a strong workforce to sustain and grow the EV sector.

PTIC Beijing Commercial Counsellor Glenn Peñaranda during his keynote address at the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Supply Chain Conference and Going Global Forum in China. PHOTO FROM DTI

During the event, PTIC-Beijing engaged with industry leaders, investors, and key stakeholders, generating significant interest in battery charging systems and value-added services for smart vehicles.

This engagement allowed the Philippines to highlight its investment-friendly environment, which includes preferential policies on tariffs, foreign ownership, and tax incentives, aimed at facilitating business operations for foreign investors.

The Philippines’ participation in the conference underscores the country’s commitment to supporting green and digital transformation in the automotive industry, while strengthening its ties with China in the rapidly growing NEV sector.
