In the Philippines, the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) remain the backbone of the country’s economy. As we navigate through the endemic COVID-19 disease, the aim for accelerated economic recovery and the need to bolster foreign investment in the country is empirical.

While the growth of MSME in the country continues to strengthen the economy on its much needed recovery, foreign investment is critical to achieving economic growth.

The Philippines being one of the countries in the ASEAN region that has a lot of opportunities to offer to foreign investors for various sectors such as telecoms, transportation, renewable energy, technology, banking and finance, among others.

Given the strong investors’ confidence in the Philippines, the need for the country to have a comprehensive guide on how to do business in the Philippines will pave the way for drawing strong interest from potential foreign investors.

Cognizant of the need for a comprehensive, transparent and forthright process of doing business in the Philippines, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines and Divina Law partner to unveil the Doing Business in the Philippines 2024 Guidebook 5th Edition.

The release of the guidebook provides prospective foreign investors a bird’s view of how they can take advantage of the investment opportunities in the Philippines, including the minute steps of business registration, capitalization, tax, and industries available for foreign investors, among others.

Also covered in the guidebook are industries and specific regulations in the Philippines renewable energy (RE), financial technology, and telecommunications. Other topics include setting up business in the country, taxation, labor & employment, immigration, and Intellectual Property (IP), among others.

ECCP President Paulo Duarte said that the guidebook aims to empower businesses and attract more investors. Aside from highlighting the key economic reforms such as the amendments to the Public Service Act (PSA), the Retail Trade Liberalization Act (RTLA), and the Foreign Investment Act (FIA), Duarte mentioned the liberalization of renewable energy and the hope of ECCP in the official resumption on ‘prospect’ of the EU-Philippines Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.

“While acknowledging these substantial strides, the ECCP remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering increased foreign direct investments (FDIs) in the Philippines,” added by Duarte.

More EU-Phl investments

It is an optimistic year for the Philippines in attracting more trade and investments through collaborative efforts with the European Union’s (EU) initiatives and participating in their cooperative programmes.

According to H.E. Luc Veron, Delegation of the European Union in the Philippines, the EU and the Philippines have entered a new era of bilateral relations. Ambassador Veron shared that the Philippines will continue to benefit from the EU GSP+ preferential trade regime until 2027.

“The EU is encouraged by the efforts of the government to improve the ease of doing business. What we look at is a further streamlining of administrative processes relevant for business, in particular, at the local level,” EU Ambassador Veron added.

Norwegian Ambassador Christian Halaas Lyster, on the other hand, shared updates on the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), encouraging the Philippines “to identify areas with high potential for more exports” from the country as this would benefit the economy and the people. He also emphasized that in any business in the world, corruption is not good, and thus must maintain the integrity and stability to attract more investors. Ambassador Lyster also hopes that the Philippines “to take a more active approach” such as conducting more market research for export growth and a boost in economic ties.

Over the years, the European Union and the Philippines’ political and diplomatic relations have transitioned from primarily focused on developmental goals to adopting a more collaborative and mutually beneficial approach.

The Philippines, having established de facto relations with 15 of the early European Union members in 1948, established formal ties with the European Community (the precursor of the European Union) on May 12, 1964. As the EU Delegation to the Philippines was officially opened in 1991, both countries have been fostering their bilateral ties from supporting democracy to the rule of international law.

This robust bilateral relationship is hoped to flourish, with the promise of 2024 shining brightly as a year marked by shared values, collaborative endeavors, and mutual growth.

The EU-Philippine 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations logo was made by Julie Ar Sibala, a graphic designer at the University of Immaculate Concepcion (Davao). Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to mutual understanding and collaborative problem-solving, it epitomizes the spirit of cooperation, solidarity, and harmonious synergy between two distinct regions.

“It’s a good representation of the continued progress of our relationship. Throughout 2024, The European Union and the Philippines will commemorate the sixty-year anniversary of diplomatic relations through various public and cultural diplomacy events,” said EU Ambassador Veron.

On the other hand, DFA Undersecretary Theresa Lazaro mentioned that the warm and friendly 60 years of diplomatic relations have been marked by productive cooperation — from peace and security, maritime cooperation, trade investment, sustainable development, and governance as well as the rules-based international order — especially that European Commission President H.E. Ursula von der Leyen visited the country last year.

“This year, we hope to advance our green digital economy partnerships with the EU, as well as the possible resumption of the free trade agreement negotiations, among others, said Usec. Lazaro.

Furthermore, special events from a multi-media exhibition to an inter-collegiate quiz (EU Whiz), a choral competition, and many more will be held to celebrate this enduring 60th anniversary of the EU-Philippine bilateral relationship.

Other EU Member States’ Ambassadors from the Embassies that were also in attendance: H.E. Michel Parys of Belgium, Mr. Dalibor Mička, Deputy Head of Mission on behalf of H.E. Karel Hejč of Czech Republic, H. E. Juha Pyykkö of Finland; H. E. Marie Fontanel of France; H.E. Andreas Pfaffernoschke with Spouse Madam Marina of Germany; Mr. Georgios Kantartzis on behalf of H.E. Ioannis Pediotis of Greece; H. E. Titanilla Toth of Hungary; H. E. William Carlos of Ireland; H. E. Marielle Geraedts of Netherlands; H. E. Răduţa Dana Matache, Mrs. Amira Mihăilescu and Mr. Cătălin Mihăilescu of Romania; Borut Žunič of Slovenia; and Alvaro Moreno of Spain.

Beyond putting a spotlight on a myriad of milestones and key achievements in the six-decade partnership between the EU and the Philippines, the celebration serves as a testament to the enduring friendship and continuously strengthening ties between the European Union and the Philippines.

“2024 is a celebration of the values that the EU and the Philippines share – democracy, human rights, equality, the rule of law, and support for multilateralism and international law,” as highlighted by the European Union Ambassador.

Truly, the lighting ceremony serves as a compelling representation of the unbreakable bond between the Philippines and the European Union as both countries navigate exciting and fruitful mutual partnership not just in 2024 but beyond.

In the face of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a result of Russia’s aggression and expansionism, the Honorary Consulate of Ukraine Manila held a charity dinner dubbed as “Dine For Peace”.
With the impressive artworks and music during the event, guests were given an unforgettable gastronomic journey from the illustrious chefs from Ukraine and the Philippines.

No less than Ukrainian Cuisine Ambassador Chef Yurii Kovryzhenko, and our very own Chef Margarita Forés, Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2016 provided satisfaction to the guests’ Epicurean voyage. Their expertise and shared vision yielded the perfect blend of Ukrainian-Filipino cuisine, connecting cultures and harmonizing traditions through culinary delights.

The charity dinner’s curated menu served as a cultural bridge, intertwining Ukrainian Pyrzhki and Filipino Blue Marlin “Malasugui” Kinilaw, Ukrainian Borsh and Crimean Tatar Sarma, and a Pasta course of Handmade Waterspinach Sanalones — which harmoniously blends Lapu-lapu, Bulacan River Prawn, Negros Blue Crab, Capiz Scallops, and local flavors. The latter was my personal favorite; as the seafood bits mixed together along the lingering coconut twist of flavor absolutely complimented the water spinach melting inside my mouth.

Speaking to THEPHILBIZNEWS, Chef Margarita Forés said she always incorporates promoting the Philippine culture and heritage by making a shellfish dish because of its “stellar set of ingredients” inspired by our rich body of waters and diverse seafood products in our country.

The celebrated Chef Forés believes that gastrodiplomacy serves as a strong weapon to solve situations in the world and bring everyone closer together. She also emphasized how gastro-diplomacy is seen with how Filipinos showcase our rich culture and heritage (be it in working on the cruise, as an OFW, and among others), wherever we are in the globe.

“The Filipino chef has a chance to really bring a lot of goodness to light and share the beauty of our culture and the warmth of our people. I think that through food sharing our cuisine, we can really make the world a better place — and I think this [Dine For Peace] event is just one example of that,” Forés said.

On the other hand, Forés expressed that she has learned a lot about Ukrainian culture and cuisine, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chef Yurii. “I think that through food, it would be a real blessing to bring a cause to light and at the same time, to do my bit for at least helping the situation in their country,” she said, as she also hopes to visit and cook significant dishes with him in Ukraine someday.

Strokes of Generosity: Masterpieces for a Worthy Cause

Dinner For Peace has not only been a culinary experience but also a heartfelt endeavor to contribute to the healing and rebuilding process in the country of Ukraine. Such proceeds will serve as a beacon of hope, offering tangible aid to those affected by the war.

Some of the auctioned artworks include:
