<p><strong>Texts and photos by Monsi A. Serrano</strong></p>

<p>For Khristina Manansala, encountering two rare works of her grandfather once more felt like stepping into the quiet, contemplative space where the master had first brought them to life.</p>

<p>Known for her own colorful and playful artistic voice, Khristina admitted the experience was nothing short of surreal. Seeing&nbsp;<em>Barung-Barong</em>&nbsp;up close for the first time, she said, stirred deeply personal memories — recalling a day she spent with her mother visiting her grandfather’s home in Binangonan.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="664" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-1024x664.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70617" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-1024x664.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-300x195.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-768x498.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-1536x996.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-150x97.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-696x452.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897-1068x693.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_04-59-03-897.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Standing before&nbsp;<em>Barung-Barong</em>&nbsp;(1967) and&nbsp;<em>Mother and Child</em>&nbsp;(1972), both still held in private collections, she was reminded not only of the artistic brilliance of her grandfather, fondly known to many as Mang Enteng, but also of the humble roots that shaped Vicente Manansala’s life, values, and enduring philosophy.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="575" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-1024x575.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70634" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-300x169.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-768x432.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-150x84.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-696x391.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-53-57-853.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>In an exclusive conversation with THEPHILBIZNEWS, Khristina shared how the rare paintings carry the personality, convictions, and quiet strength of the man who would later become one of the country’s most celebrated modern artists.</p>

<p><strong>A rare glimpse of the master</strong><br><br>The first work, Barung-Barong (1967), measuring 14 × 24 inches, depicts modest dwellings — structures familiar in many Filipino communities.</p>

<p>To the untrained eye, the subject may appear simple. But for collectors and scholars of Philippine modern art, such imagery reveals the deep cultural consciousness that defined Manansala’s work.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="824" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-1024x824.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70629" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-1024x824.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-300x242.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-768x618.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-1536x1236.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-150x121.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-696x560.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220-1068x860.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-33-39-220.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>As one of the pioneers of modern Philippine painting, Manansala’s art often portrayed the realities of Filipino life — from urban congestion and market vendors to fishermen, families, and everyday community scenes. His revolutionary approach to cubism reflected both social realities and the cultural identity of the Filipino people.</p>

<p>For Khristina, the Barung-Barong painting carries a personal meaning beyond its artistic value.</p>

<p>“The Barung-Barong reminds me of how Lolo began, simple, grounded, and very connected to the life of ordinary Filipinos.”</p>

<p>The humble structures in the painting symbolize the enduring Filipino values of humility, hospitality, and resilience.</p>

<p>“It reminds us of the people who embrace the Philippines as their home and appreciate its culture,” she said.</p>

<p><strong>Centerpiece of Embassy Night</strong></p>

<p><a href="https://thephilbiznews.com/2024/05/07/rare-and-early-work-of-manansala-takes-center-stage-at-thephilbiznews-embassy-night/">The painting drew significant attention when it was displayed during THEPHILBIZNEWS Embassy Night at Hotel Okura Manila</a>, where diplomats, ambassadors, and leaders from the business community gathered.</p>

<p>During the event, the rare artwork served as the centerpiece attraction of the evening.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70619" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-300x200.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-768x512.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-150x100.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-696x464.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-09-56-302.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The painting captures the essence of everyday Filipino life, reflecting Manansala’s enduring fascination with the country’s social realities and cultural identity.</p>

<p>Collectors and art patrons present at the gathering took notice.</p>

<p>According to sources familiar with the event, several inquiries and offers were quietly made to acquire the painting. Yet the owner declined to entertain them, choosing to keep the rare work within a private collection.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="299" height="449" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-07-40-456.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70620" style="width:393px;height:auto" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-07-40-456.jpg 299w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-07-40-456-200x300.jpg 200w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-07-40-456-150x225.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px" /></figure></div>

<p>In the art world, such decisions often add to a work’s mystery.</p>

<p>After all, pieces by Vicente Manansala seldom surface outside major exhibitions or established auction houses.</p>

<p><strong>Memories from Binangonan</strong></p>

<p>For Khristina, the encounter with the painting also revived memories of visiting her grandfather’s home in Binangonan.</p>

<p>She recalled walking into his working area and noticing unusual materials that piqued her curiosity as a child.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="615" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-1024x615.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70636" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-1024x615.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-768x461.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-1536x923.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-150x90.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-696x418.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1-1068x641.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-43-54-326-1.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>“I saw metal sheets in his studio,” she said. “At that time I wondered why Lolo had them.”</p>

<p>Only later did she realize that Manansala was experimenting with materials — pushing boundaries and exploring unconventional approaches.</p>

<p>“Maverick, unthinkable, yet brilliant,” she said.</p>

<p><strong>The quiet mystery of Mother and Child</strong></p>

<p>The second painting, Mother and Child (1972), reveals a different dimension of Manansala’s artistic voice.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="575" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-1024x575.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70630" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-150x84.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-696x391.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-17-32-042-1.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Rendered in oil on canvas and measuring 16 × 20 inches, the work depicts a mother and child surrounded by everyday objects such as a bottle, fish, and interior elements—quiet reminders of Filipino domestic life.</p>

<p>Painted in Manansala’s signature transparent cubism, the scene merges sacred imagery with ordinary life.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="575" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-1024x575.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70631" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-150x84.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-696x391.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-28-25-213-1.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>“The painting is very Filipino,” Khristina explained. “The bottle, the fish, and the interior space show everyday family life.”</p>

<p>The palette is subdued and contemplative — far from the bright colors often associated with Philippine art.</p>

<p>“It’s not colorful,” she noted. “But the dramatic choice of colors, with a touch of antiquity, makes it rare and daring.”</p>

<p>Notably, the painting has never appeared in auction catalogues or public exhibitions and remains in private ownership.</p>

<p><strong>The contradictions of Mang Enteng</strong></p>

<p>To Khristina, the works also reveal the personality of the artist himself.</p>

<p>Manansala was known for portraying the life of ordinary Filipinos — market vendors, families, fishermen, and the crowded streets of Manila — subjects that reflected the social realities of the country.</p>

<p>Yet behind the seemingly simple subjects was a man of complex ideas and unconventional views.</p>

<p>“He was open-minded, stubborn, straightforward, and uncompromising,” she said.</p>

<p>Some of his works carry a certain roughness or simplicity, yet his thoughts and artistic philosophy were remarkably progressive for his time.</p>

<p>“In many ways, his personality was manifested in his art.”</p>

<p><strong>Carrying the legacy forward</strong></p>

<p>For Khristina, encountering the two rare paintings has also reaffirmed her own path as an artist.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="575" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-1024x575.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70635" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-300x169.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-768x432.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-150x84.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-696x391.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-15_19-36-12-147.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Known for her colorful and playful style, she believes her grandfather’s greatest lesson was the courage to experiment.</p>

<p><a href="https://thephilbiznews.com/2025/07/13/khristina-manansala-paints-her-own-path-while-honoring-her-grandfathers-genius/">“I believe I imbibe Lolo’s way of life — to create my own style and explore possibilities,”</a> she said.</p>

<p>Inspired by these works, she has already created reinterpretations of some of his pieces, including The Flight and Woman With Cat.</p>

<p>But she insists that imitation is not the goal.</p>

<p>For collectors and admirers of Philippine modern art, the reappearance of such works offers a rare glimpse into the creative journey of Vicente Manansala.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="575" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-1024x575.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-70625" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-300x169.jpg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-768x432.jpg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-1536x863.jpg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-150x84.jpg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-696x391.jpg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/viber_image_2026-03-16_05-22-39-716.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>For Khristina, however, the moment was something more intimate.</p>

<p>Standing before the paintings, she felt the presence of the man she simply calls Lolo.</p>

<p>“In these two rare paintings,” she said softly, “I feel Lolo’s brilliance.”</p>

<p>Legacy can be a burden, or a brushstroke of inspiration. For Khristina Manansala, granddaughter of National Artist Vicente “Enteng” Manansala, it’s both.</p>

<p>Few surnames resonate as deeply in the Philippine art scene as Manansala. The late Vicente Manansala, hailed as a National Artist for Painting, is revered for his distinctive transparent cubism and his depictions of Filipino life. His works have become visual testaments to the values of resilience, hospitality, and humility.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1003" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-1024x1003.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-63022" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-1024x1003.jpeg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-300x294.jpeg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-768x752.jpeg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-1536x1504.jpeg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-150x147.jpeg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-696x682.jpeg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924-1068x1046.jpeg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0924.jpeg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Khristina painting at Gernsheim, Germany.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Forty-four years after his passing, the Manansala name continues to command reverence, both in the Philippines and abroad. And yet, Khristina Manansala, one of his two granddaughters following in his artistic footsteps, chooses to take the quieter, more deliberate road.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="736" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-1024x736.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-63021" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-1024x736.jpeg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-300x216.jpeg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-768x552.jpeg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-1536x1104.jpeg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-150x108.jpeg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-696x500.jpeg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923-1068x768.jpeg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0923.jpeg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Five Geishas<br>3ft x 4.ft <br>Oil on canvas</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p>“There’s no question that Manansala is in my vein. I am proud and humbled, and my Lolo Enteng knows that,” Khristina shared. “However, as an artist, I don’t want people to think I’m living under his shadow… whether I like it or not, consciously or subconsciously, what I am now as an artist, Lolo Enteng has a great influence in it because my DNA is Manansala.”</p>

<p>Khristina isn’t alone in carrying forward the family’s artistic torch. Her sister Ronna, a professor at a state university in Manila, is known for her ballerina-themed paintings and has also reinterpreted some of Vicente Manansala’s iconic works. But while both women are proud heirs to their grandfather’s legacy, they have cultivated distinctly personal styles.</p>

<p>“I lean toward cubism and vibrant colors. That’s my personality, just like my sanguine nature,” Khristina said. “I have painted some Japanese-like features and character because I am amazed by their personality, prim and proper, simple and their enigmatic beauty is lasting.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="762" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-1024x762.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-63024" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-1024x762.jpeg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-300x223.jpeg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-768x571.jpeg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-1536x1142.jpeg 1536w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-150x112.jpeg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-485x360.jpeg 485w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-696x518.jpeg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925-1068x794.jpeg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0925.jpeg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Three Geishas with Fan<br>3ft x 4ft<br>Oil on canvas</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p>Khristina has also lovingly recreated some of her grandfather’s masterpieces to preserve and share his legacy.</p>

<p>“There’s only one Vicente Manansala and anyone below his genealogy would not be able to equal his accomplishments and recognitions here and abroad,” Khristina said. “When I did the remake of some of Lolo’s works, the end in my mind was not to imitate him. Nor did I think that I was better than him. Nor did I want to prove that I can do better. No one does it best than him.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="520" src="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-1024x520.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-63025" srcset="https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-1024x520.jpeg 1024w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-300x152.jpeg 300w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-768x390.jpeg 768w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-150x76.jpeg 150w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-696x353.jpeg 696w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922-1068x542.jpeg 1068w, https://thephilbiznews.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IMG_0922.jpeg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Babae<br>3ft x 8ft<br>Oil on canvas</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p>As direct descendants and practicing artists, Khristina and Ronna are among the very few who can confidently authenticate Vicente Manansala’s original works.</p>

<p>Beyond style and provenance, what endures in Manansala’s legacy is his spirit: a quiet, powerful insistence that Filipino culture is worthy of celebration on canvas. This is the same spirit that Tina carries in her own work.</p>

<p>“Just like many other National Artists, his works inspire and remind us that behind every painting, there’s a story. For instance the <strong><a href="https://thephilbiznews.com/2024/05/07/rare-and-early-work-of-manansala-takes-center-stage-at-thephilbiznews-embassy-night/">Barung-Barong</a></strong>, the flat metal art piece Lolo created in 1967. It was not created for the sake of it. Definitely, there’s something deeper than what meets the eye.”</p>

<p>And that, perhaps, is what defines the true art aficionado, not just a collector of names or canvases, but one who can feel the narrative pulse in every stroke, the soul behind the subject.</p>

<p>“In my case, I’ll continue to paint to inspire,” Khristina said. “Art is a good vehicle to appreciate and respect the uniqueness of one’s culture. Lolo Enteng’s masterpieces captured the richness of the Filipino identity. They still speak to so many of us today.”</p>

<p>Her voice softens, but her conviction doesn’t waver:</p>

<p>“Yes, I am a proud Manansala. But there is only one Vicente Manansala. Neither Ronna nor I can replicate what he did for art and for this country. What we can do is honor him by telling our own stories.&#8221;</p>
