MPower, the local retail electricity supply (RES) unit of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), and the Gokongwei Group have reaffirmed their long-standing partnership through a renewed RES contract, further entrusting the power needs of most of the latter’s major facilities across Luzon to one of the country’s leading retail suppliers.

Under the new contract, MPower will now power an expanded list of Gokongwei Group companies from its flagship conglomerate JG Summit companies, namely Robinsons Land Corporation, Cebu Pacific, Universal Robina Corporation, JG Summit Olefins Corporation, and RL Commercial REIT, Inc. Also covered under the deal is Robinsons Supermarket Corporation, the supermarket chain under Robinsons Retail Holdings, Inc.

The contract renewal ensures that these major operations will continue to be powered reliably, competitively, and sustainably.

“This agreement goes beyond securing a reliable power supply – it represents our collective commitment to sustainability and innovation. With MPower as our partner, we are able to integrate a 60% renewable energy solution into our operations. This is a meaningful step forward in our journey to reduce our environmental impact while continuing to serve Filipino communities through our businesses,” said Lance Y. Gokongwei, President and CEO of JG Summit Holdings.

This significant milestone cements the continuing collaboration that 2013, when MPower first started supplying electricity to key companies under JG Summit. Over a decade later, this renewed agreement solidifies not only the trust and reliability that have defined the relationship but also the shared commitment to sustainable and efficient energy solutions.

“Our two groups have shared more than just business interests over the years—we’ve shared a deep commitment to nation-building, innovation, and service to the Filipino people. Through all the changes, one conviction has remained constant: that companies like ours must do more than generate value – we must create impact,” said Meralco Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan.

“This partnership with JG Summit Holdings, through MPower, reflects that shared purpose as we work together to empower communities and contribute to a stronger, more sustainable Philippines,” Pangilinan concluded.

In celebration of World Environment Day, Globe is charging ahead on its climate action goals by expanding its use of clean energy to power a total of 33 high-energy utilization sites — and marking a significant milestone with the company’s first-ever batch of renewable energy-powered sites in Mindanao.

This marks another step forward in Globe’s mission to decarbonize its operations and champion sustainability, one site at a time.

“Renewable energy has been a real, operational commitment for us for the past six years,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at Globe. “Each site we shift to clean power isn’t just about reducing emissions – it’s about building a future-proof network that puts people and planet first.”

Through its partnerships with licensed Retail Electricity Suppliers (RES), Globe is sourcing energy from off-site solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal plants through the electricity grid under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). As of the moment, GEOP can be tapped for facilities with a monthly average peak demand of 100 kilowatts or greater, and RCOA for those with 500 kilowatts or greater. These allow high-energy utilization sites and facilities to directly contract with retail electricity suppliers of renewable electricity.

As a result, the share of renewable energy in Globe’s overall electricity consumption grew from 14% in 2021 to 24% in 2024. This includes the company’s corporate offices and mixed-use facilities, which are now also powered by clean energy.

Over the next two years, Globe plans to power more than 150 sites with renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), on-site solarization, as well as leveraging the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). The RAP is a scheme where two or more end-users with installed meters within a contiguous area are joined together to share the benefits of the RCOA program. These initiatives further deepen the company’s commitment to decarbonization and the clean energy transition.

These initiatives support the company’s Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved commitment: to reduce Scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and cut Scope 3 emissions by 25% in 2030, based on the 2021 baseline. By 2050, the company aims to reduce absolute emissions across all three scopes by 90%.

Globe’s efforts also support the Philippines’ Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement by helping increase demand for clean energy and reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

MPower, the local retail electricity supplier of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco), has enabled the transition of Allegro Microsystems Philippines Inc. (Allegro) to sustainable operations through a renewed Retail Electricity Supply Agreement.

Allegro, which operates in Parañaque City, will now source 100% renewable energy supply from MPower under the new terms of their partnership.

The strengthened partnership between MPower and Allegro, which spans over a decade, represents a significant step toward advancing Allegro’s sustainability goals ahead of schedule.

Allegro Senior Director Controller Ronald Dela Rosa extended his gratitude to MPower “for a resilient and enduring partnership over the past 12 years.”

“Together, we’ve weathered periods of both stability and disruption with unwavering alignment and mutual trust. MPower has enabled us to achieve our five-year sustainability target early, accelerating our timeline. This marks a major milestone in our advocacy and stand to lead a more responsible semiconductor manufacturing,” he said.

The renewed partnership is expected to deliver measurable environmental benefits, including a significant reduction in carbon emissions, while also aligning with global and local best practices for efficient energy use, which MPower proactively promotes.

“MPower’s provision of 100% renewable energy has enabled Allegro to realize its 2030 sustainability target at its manufacturing sites ahead of schedule. This success highlights the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to clean energy transformation,” First Vice President and Head of MPower Redel M. Domingo said.

MSpectrum, Inc., a wholly owned solar subsidiary of the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco), turned over a 120-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar rooftop project to DHL Supply Chain to power its training center in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The project is estimated to generate approximately 171,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy annually, enabling DHL to reduce its carbon footprint by an estimated 121 tons—equivalent to planting over 5,500 trees and eliminating more than 482,000 kilometers of vehicle travel each year.

“We are looking at building a few more sites powered by solar energy. It just makes so much sense, not just for this generation, but for future generations as well. We’ll continue to invest in solar panels, and we look forward to expanding and strengthening this partnership with MSpectrum,” DHL Country Managing Director Bevan Williams said.

Through this project, MSpectrum supports DHL’s energy efficiency efforts, reinforcing the logistics company’s commitment to sustainability as it expands its operations in the Philippines.

“As one of the largest and most respected logistics companies in the world, DHL’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is truly inspiring. It is a tremendous honor for us to be working alongside a global brand that shares our vision of a cleaner, greener future. This partnership is more than just a milestone—it is a meaningful step toward our shared vision of a future where solar rooftops are a common sight across the Philippines. With this project, we take one step closer to that future,” MSpectrum President and CEO Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo said.

This recent collaboration between MSpectrum and DHL marks a continuation of the growing partnership between Meralco and DHL, which began with the energization of the logistics company’s largest facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna and was strengthened through Power Consult’s expert guidance on optimizing energy use.

“While DHL ensures the seamless movement of goods and keeps global supply chains running, Meralco delivers power that fuels your operations. Together, we drive progress and productivity that ripple far beyond our individual roles – creating opportunities and contributing to the development of a more resilient and inclusive nation,” Meralco First Vice President and Head Customer Retail Services Charina P. Padua said.

As an active nation-building partner, Meralco and its subsidiaries actively support the logistics sector with innovative solutions and empower stakeholders to further contribute to economic development.

Renewable energy dominates the Philippine investment landscape in 2024, securing ₱1.3 trillion, or 68%, of the total ₱1.9 trillion in approved investments.

The Board of Investments (BOI) said this record-breaking achievement highlights the Marcos Jr. administration’s successful push to position the Philippines as a leading investment destination, with overall investment figures surpassing 2023 numbers by more than 29%.

The emerging trend is: Filipino-owned projects secure foreign partnerships thus ensuring sustained industry development and greater global integration.

For example, Terra Solar of MGen (Meralco), the second-largest RE project registered in 2024, began as a fully Filipino-owned entity but is now 40% owned by UK-based ACTIS. Similarly, SunAsia Energy, originally 100% Filipino, has received backing from Australian firm Macquarie, with five projects in Laguna Lake involving foreign ownership. Tera Renewables, initially a Filipino company, is now supported by U.S.-based investment giant BlackRock.

According to a BOI news release, domestic investments more than doubled from ₱578 billion in 2023 to ₱1.35 trillion, while foreign investments accounted for ₱544 billion.

Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs (SAPIEA) Frederick D. Go emphasized the broader economic impact, noting these investments are expected to generate over 130,000 jobs, according to data from various investment promotion agencies.

“This unprecedented performance shows growing investor confidence in the Philippines and the success of the administration’s investment and economic policies,” said SAPIEA Go.

“We are optimistic that these approved projects will translate into tangible economic benefits, including more and better job opportunities for Filipinos, and pave the way for sustainable, investment-led growth,” he added.

Key contributors to this milestone are BOI, Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), Clark Development Corporation (CDC), and Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA).

Trade Undersecretary Perry Rodolfo noted the importance of both the scale and the nature of the investments.

“The projects approved focus on sectors that will modernize and transform the Philippine economy—such as renewable energy, telecom infrastructure, innovation-driven light manufacturing, and integrated tech-enabled agriculture,” Rodolfo said.

Aside from renewable energy, other sectors like manufacturing (₱144 billion), real estate (₱138 billion), transportation and storage (₱131 billion), and electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply (₱79 billion) also attracted significant investments.

Switzerland, South Korea, the Netherlands, Japan, and Singapore emerged as the top foreign investors.

The BOI said that as the Philippines continues its upward investment trajectory, these developments reflect the growing appeal of the country to global capital. The evolving ownership landscape signals a maturing investment climate, fostering strong local participation while leveraging international partnerships to drive long-term, sustainable growth.

This comprehensive target, alongside the nation’s stable economic climate and supportive regulatory environment, presents an excellent opportunity for Masdar’s growth and expansion in the region.

“We welcome Masdar’s vision to invest in the Philippines as it aligns perfectly with the vision of President Marcos Jr. for a greener future. The DTI and the Philippine government are committed to supporting sustainable energy initiatives that will not only drive economic growth but also ensure a greener future for our nation.” Secretary Roque added.

The meeting with Masdar is part of Secretary Roque’s official visit to the UAE, where she engages with key stakeholders to promote investment opportunities in the Philippines across various sectors. Attracting investments in renewable energy is a critical component of the Philippine government’s strategy to achieve energy self-reliance and mitigate the impact of climate change.

At the celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the enthronement of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco showcased its impressive strides in various sectors, with a particular emphasis on its ambitious renewable energy plans.

Moroccan Ambassador to the Philippines Mohammed Rida El-Fassi emphasized the significance of the 2030 Strategy for Renewable Energy.

“The Kingdom currently aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its total power capacity to 52% by 2030,” the ambassador announced, outlining the nation’s forward-thinking approach to energy sustainability.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to transform Morocco’s energy landscape, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and position the country as a leader in renewable energy within Africa.

Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has launched several sectoral strategies aimed at stimulating economic growth and fostering sustainable development. The Green Road Plan is designed to boost future production while ensuring environmental preservation. These efforts reflect Morocco’s broader vision of integrating economic development with ecological responsibility.

Morocco’s commitment to renewable energy is complemented by a series of transformative infrastructural projects. Notable among these are the Tangier Mediterranean Port, now the largest logistical and industrial port in the continent and the Mediterranean region, and the Worcester-Sorbonne Power Station, one of the largest globally. Additionally, Morocco boasts the first and only high-speed train in Africa, further underscoring its infrastructural advancements.

The ambassador also highlighted the country’s broader achievements under the reign of King Mohammed VI, including significant political, economic, and social reforms. The Moroccan Family Code, adopted in 2004, promotes gender equality and empowers women in society, while the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, established the same year, addresses human rights issues. The 2011 Constitution is another milestone, strengthening Morocco’s democratic foundations and modern governance.

In the realm of international relations, Morocco continues to promote values of tolerance, peace, diversity, and intercultural dialogue. The country’s strategic cooperation with South-Saharan regions and its robust diplomatic relations with the Philippines were particularly highlighted. The reopening of the Philippine embassy in Morocco and numerous high-level visits underscore the dynamic and growing partnership between the two nations.
