President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared the rampant smuggling of agricultural products a national security threat, ordering law enforcement and intelligence agencies to join the Department of Agriculture (DA) in dismantling the criminal networks behind the illicit trade.

“This not only harms the economy but fosters corruption at multiple levels,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel in a news release last week (July 14), as he detailed the President’s marching orders to go after smugglers, their backers, and enablers with the full force of the law.

Secretary Tiu Laurel confirmed that he has already met with newly appointed Bureau of Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre, and officials from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to craft a joint strategy targeting the syndicates flooding local markets with illegal imports.

“The President has directed the DA to throw the book at the consignees and all those involved in smuggling these agricultural products. By the end of the year, we hope to see many of those responsible handcuffed, facing charges,” said Secretary Tiu Laurel.

He added that customs brokers who facilitate these illegal shipments will also be held accountable under the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Law, the Food Safety Act, and the Customs Code.

Uninspected imports—many of which come from Port of Xiamen in China—pose serious threats not only to local livelihoods but also to public health and biosecurity, with potential risks to the country’s plant and livestock industries. The government has since heightened surveillance on shipments from the Chinese port, which has been identified as a major exit point for smuggled agricultural goods.

The President’s directive comes amid growing outrage from farmers’ groups and industry stakeholders who have long decried how smuggling devastates farmgate prices, destabilizes local production, and rewards criminality at the expense of the country’s food sovereignty.

Ongoing discussions on an agreement for the exchange and protection of classified information underscore the expanding defense partnership between the Philippines and Germany, as both countries elevate their cooperation to meet the region’s evolving security challenges.

German Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke, said the talks reflect growing trust and the shared resolve to uphold peace, stability, and a rules-based international order.

“Security cannot be achieved alone—it must be built through cooperation with trusted partners. The Philippines is one of them,” he said.

Speaking at the 9th anniversary celebration of the 2016 Arbitral Award won by the Philippines against China, Ambassador Pfaffernoschke reaffirmed Germany’s support for the Philippines’ adherence to international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“The Arbitral Award is not only a victory for the Philippines, but for international law. Germany stands with the Philippines in asserting its sovereign rights under UNCLOS,” he said.

Stronger ties built on milestones

Ambassador Pfaffernoschke also cited several milestones that are redefining the two countries’ defense relations, including:

The first-ever visit of a German Defense Minister to the Philippines in 2024,

The German Navy’s historic port call in Manila after more than two decades,

And the signing of the Philippine-German Defense Cooperation Arrangement in May 2025 by Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and German Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius.

“We are entering a new phase of defense collaboration—one that reflects mutual trust, shared values, and a common responsibility to contribute to regional stability,” he noted.

Beyond exercises: Institutional and capacity building

The Ambassador emphasized that the partnership goes beyond joint drills and ceremonial visits. It includes:

Staff-level defense policy talks between the Philippine Department of National Defense and Germany’s Ministry of Defense,

Training programs in Germany for Philippine military officers,

Continued German participation in multilateral exercises such as BALIKATAN,

And the aforementioned development of a potential agreement on intelligence and classified data exchange.

“These efforts are aimed at strengthening the Philippines’ defense capabilities while reinforcing Germany’s commitment to peace and maritime security in the Indo-Pacific,” he added.

“We are optimistic that this partnership will continue to grow in strength and substance for the benefit of our nations and the wider international community,” Ambassador Pfaffernoschke said.

By Robert B. Roque Jr.

It is nothing new to hear China playing dirty and finding no shame in targeting one of its nearest, weakest, and poorest neighbors, the Philippines.

I’m talking about the reality unveiled with the arrest of five Chinese nationals caught spying on Navy and Coast Guard assets in Palawan last week.

How these five frequent visitors from the Mainland embedded themselves in Philippine society with spotless records should alarm every Filipino.

It is espionage at its best, relaying real-time intelligence they had gathered using drones and strategically placed CCTV cameras, all pointing at the West Philippine Sea.

The arrests confirm what many of us already suspected: Beijing knows too much, too fast, about Philippine maritime operations.

The big question now — who’s backing them? The government hesitates to name China outright, but let’s be real: rogue individuals don’t run covert surveillance rings on military deployments for fun.

This is not just a security breach; it’s a violation of sovereignty. That these spies operated undetected for years, under the guise of business and charity work, should force a reckoning – if not at the hands of our superpower friends, then before the hand of God.

Showbiz Senate

Ever heard of this tongue-in-cheek commentary: “Politics is showbiz for ugly people?” Not meaning to be more profound, let’s take this in the literal sense. Hahaha!

Well, however biting or close to the truth this aphorism may sound, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey on the standing of senatorial aspirants appears to tell a different story. Based on the poll, it’s the actors and entertainers who took the biggest hits.

Action star-turned-Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. and TV gameshow host Willie Revillame — magnets of mass appeal — saw their numbers nosedive from last year’s survey and fall on the edge of the Magic 12 circle.

Another action star, Lito Lapid, though seems to be perpetually popular in the Senate. He who barely speaks in the sessions somehow saw his numbers leap, landing him in 3rd place. Perhaps, his gunslinging image is more reassuring than actual governance.

Then we have Tito Sotto whose Eat Bulaga wholesome vibe proves to carry his old-school credibility up the ranks from 5th place to 2nd place in the latest poll.

I don’t know if we could still consider big sister, Imee Marcos – who has some acting chops to her name — a “showbiz personality.” But while she is close to the arts, one could surmise fatigue, perhaps, over her oft-dramatic appearances that may not be convincing in terms of her friendship with the Dutertes and her animosity with Speaker Martin Romualdez. This sister act has now brought her poll ranking to 12th-14th place.

*         *         *
