By Monsi A. Serrano

Two years ago, it was like a strike of lightning that hit the country’s hospitality industry and the year 2020 was just starting. The once robust and bustling tourism plans and activities for the whole year were forced to take the sideline. What made it more unbearable and disheartening before for those who were employed by the industry is the fact that it gave them uncertainty at the least, while others received heartbreaking news as their companies were forced to shut down permanently.

The continued efforts to promote local tourism surely paved the way for an imminent rebound of Philippines’ domestic tourism. Yes, there may have been some jobs lost in the industry due to the pandemic. But this was just a temporary situation and Filipinos’ resiliency and character surfaced.

It is interesting to note that the diplomatic community has been doing their share in promoting the country by visiting our beautiful places and sharing it in their respective social media accounts which was a big boost in promoting the Philippines’ beautiful destinations.

For Hotel 101 Group, they are happy and grateful that their Corporate and MICE Associations clients are back again with them as soon as the government allowed the hotels to accept bookings.

Speaking during the Hotel 101 Group’s Thanksgiving Night last December 13, Ms. Gel Gomez, General Manager of Hotel 101 Group said, “Our travel agency associations, Pacific Asia Travel Association, Philippine Travel Agencies Association, Philippine Tour Operators Association are bouncing back, together with the rest of the industry.”

She thanked Hotel101 Group media friends and partners for continually supporting their initiatives.

As the government eased up travel restrictions and allowed gatherings that follow stringent health protocols, Hotel101 continuously housed frontliners from the Philippine National Red Cross, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Quarantine, MMDA, and Oplan Kalinga, and also the Overseas Filipino Workers.

Brandishing its stellar performance of achieving 91.56% occupancy for Hotel 101 – Manila and 95.45% for Jinjiang Inn – Ortigas, in the first two months of 2022 gave them confidence about the imminent recovery of the hospitality industry in the country. Apart from that, hotel revenues grew significantly and derived from MICE businesses, Liga ng mga Barangay and other government associations, several conventions from organizations, among others.

“We are fortunate to be the preferred hotel of the gaming industry and E-Sports – with our friends from Gariath and AcadArena making us the official hotel partner of the biggest E-sports conventions such as ESGS, Pinoy Gaming Festival, Rev Major,” Gomez added.

The General Manager of Hotel 101 Group revealed she and her team managed to grow the revenue in the midst of challenging times and reinforcing brand awareness by reintroducing staycations through partnerships with Ms. Earth Philippines, Miss International Queen Philippines, And 4th time with Mr. & Ms. Chinatown PH.

“The supporters of these pageants and the queens gave us over the top engagements on our social media accounts. And just this morning, we ranked TOP 1 Hotel in whole of Pasay City, and TOP 6 in LUZON, among all hotels, on TripAdvisor,” she added.

Apart from the strategic partnership she has forged with others, Gomez also noted some of the major projects they initiated in Hotel101 Group such as the launch of 101 STAY GREEN.

The 101 STAY GREEN is Hotel 101 Group’s sustainability initiative which according to Gomez a part of their way of starting or restarting right.

“We started measuring our water and energy consumption and waste, from all our hotels. And with the help of the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inc. (PCEPSDI) we are now guided in creating our targets,” she explained.

Together with the Department of Tourism NCR and Cycling Influencers, Hotel101 also launched our Bike Happy Route to promote biking as sustainable means of transportation. And to complement the program, Horizon Café, the restaurant of Hotel101 and Jinjiang Inn supported this initiative by giving free brewed coffee to bikers during weekends from 6am to 12noon for the whole year of 2022.

They also partnered with DeWaste Solutions in the recycling of plastic waste across our hotels and to date, they have collected over 544 large sacks of PET bottles for them to upcycle. While the formidable partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard, MEPCOM and CGAF with Memorandum of Agreements, for sustainability efforts continues.

While both Pasay City Government and Iloilo City LGU, joined in mounting a series of information education campaigns on waste management and segregation for all the 201 barangays of Pasay City and 180 barangays of Iloilo, with PCG and DENR.

“We are also happy to disclose that Booking.com and Expedia, two of the largest online travel platforms in the world, recognized our hotels for our sustainability practices, with the Travel Sustainability Badge and the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge, as we commit to concrete, transparent and achievable actions towards sustainable tourism and travel,” said Gomez.

Expansion program here and abroad

While two years may be challenging for the entire hotel industry, Gomez nonetheless thanked everyone for supporting the Hotel101 Group properties such as Hotel 101–Manila, Injap Tower Hotel Iloilo, Jinjiang Inn – Ortigas and Makati, and Boracay Station 1.

She also revealed the ongoing projects of Hotel 101 such as the ones in Jinjiang Inn–Boracay New Coast, Hotel 101 Cebu Mactan Airport, Ascott DD Meridian Park, a 5-star luxury serviced apartment with more than 300 units, Hotel 101-Fort, and Hotel 101–Davao, which is touted as the biggest hotel in Mindanao to date when it opens.

Apart from this, Gomez revealed that Hotel 101 will be the first Filipino international hotel brand, with our Hotel 101–Niseko, located in Kuchan, Niseko in Sapporo, Japan and has 518 rooms is set to open in 2025.

By Victoria “NIKE” De Dios

There’s no denying that the pandemic had truly struck hard in the industry of accommodation, with grand events and year-long reservations had to be canceled for the time being until all the health and safety protocols were implemented and the adaption to the digital technology to make the customer experience safe and efficient.

Slowly but surely, the Philippines navigates in the most challenging times for our country, and even the whole world as COVID-19 made the world stood still. But indeed, Filipinos’ resilience and determination to deal with the challenges proved to be strong, as the country slowly gets back on its feet and the tourism industry sees more silver linings since the time that the economy was opened and the travel restriction was lifted, a more robust tourism industry is seen in the coming years.

Needless to say, the hotel industry has come back to life with scientific and internationally-accepted health risk mitigation protocols in place. And now on its way to recovery and the promising forecast of 6.7 percent over the next 10 years has spurred hope and inspiration to many industry stakeholders in the country.

Mindful of how travel and tourism have breathed life into the Philippine economy, Virtus Awards recognizes the crème de la crème of the industry.

After two years of gathering and celebrating via laptop screens, the Virtus Awards – the annual peer-recognition event of the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA), finally held its first face-to-face awarding ceremonies.

Held at Okada Manila last October 25, the 2022 Virtus Awards recognized, as in previous years, three winners for its individual categories: for Outstanding Sales & Marketing Associate, the top plum went to Jhune Niño Calinawan, Banquet Sales Executive of Quest Hotel & Conference Center-Cebu. The Outstanding Sales & Marketing Manager award was given to Marie Antonnette de Belen, Conrad Manila’s Senior Sales Manager. Recognition for Outstanding Sales & Marketing Leader was awarded to Michelle Angeli Crudo, Director of Sales at Novotel Manila Araneta City.

For its Outstanding Marketing Campaign award, recognition was given to Newport World Resorts (NWR) for its “I Love Earth” program, which was established as the resort group’s commitment to sustainability after seeing the disruption and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. NWR houses five international hotels, a shopping mall, casinos, entertainment venues, and MICE facilities. As part of its post-pandemic plans, they are consolidating and integrating all sustainability efforts throughout the property complex under “I Love Earth.” The program’s main innovation is the creation of the I Love Earth Council, which quickly assessed and identified priority areas for collaboration. These priorities have since become NWR’s basis for its sustainability targets.

Congratulating this year’s winners, Virtus Awards chair Rose Libongco said that their achievement marked the start of their “odyssey” in the industry.

“Every day forward is your opportunity to prove that you are the right winner. Watchful eyes are on you to continue to demonstrate excellence in purpose, plan, and action thereby educating others directly, inspiring by example, and converting others towards the philosophy of winning until you form a like-minded army who will make your objectives doable, replicate them and eventually perpetuate your ideals of success,” Libongco said.

And with the theme “Breakthrough 2022,” outgoing HSMA president Benjie Martinez said that this year’s winners are helping the industry break free from the pandemic by “embracing opportunities and relentlessly pursuing the business for [their] respective properties despite the challenges.”

He added, “For fostering creativity and bringing in new perspectives and ideas that drive customer loyalty, and for taking pride in doing quality work regardless of the task, you are worthy of the Virtus Awards.”

Also recognized at this year’s Virtus, which is now in its eighth year–its most auspicious, as Libongco pointed out–were the winners of 2020 and 2021, respectively: Okada Manila Events Executive Erika Denice Patajo and Hotel 101 Group MICE Sales Executive Ericka Joy Calamba (Outstanding Marketing Associates); El Nido Resorts Senior Sales Manager Pio Sanchez and JPark Island Resort & Waterpark Mactan, Cebu Marketing and Communications Manager Alexis John Aquino (Outstanding Marketing Managers); Conrad Manila Sales-FiT Director Bae Eun Joo and Robinsons Hotels and Resorts’ Sales and Marketing Group Director Joselina de Mesa (Outstanding Marketing Leader).

Started in 2015, the Virtus Awards is organized by HSMA with the support of Co-Presenters Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotions Board Philippines, Gold partners Atlantis and Okada Manila; Silver partners Dida Travel, Crimson Filinvest, and Media Meter; Bronze partners IDeaS, Maya Business, and Newport World Resorts; Wine & Snack Partner EDI (Barefoot, Harveys, and PikNik).

Hotel 101 Group brings 101 STAY GREEN campaign to Iloilo City as it launched sustainability efforts in the City of Love, highlighted by agreements with the Philippine Coast Guard Aviation Force and the support from the Iloilo Government, held last September 12, 2022, at Injap Tower Hotel.

Following a successful launch of the 101 STAY GREEN campaign in Manila, where Hotel 101 Group partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Command and the Pasay City Government, today “I am also happy to be strengthening our partnerships between the Iloilo City and the Philippine Coast Guard Aviation Force led by CG Capt. Christine Diciano, both of which started or were ignited during the height of the pandemic, as we worked closely to help each other survive and manage our health crisis,” says Hotel 101 Group General Manager Gel Gomez.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, through his representative Iloilo City Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) Officer-in-Charge Engineer Neil Ravena, relayed his message of thanks for Hotel 101 Group’s commitment to sustainability. “As we gather today for the STAY GREEN program of Hotel 101 Group, we are reminded also of our commitment in protecting the environment through the many initiatives of the city,” he remarked.

“We could not achieve what we have now, if not for our partners, like Hotel 101 Group. That’s why I am very grateful we collaborate with them because we make better and more adapting communities,” Mayor Treñas said.

Following the recently concluded 4-part series of 101 STAY GREEN Sustainability Training Seminars with Pasay City Barangay Officials, Injap Tower Hotel, together with the Iloilo CENRO and the Philippine Coast Guard Marine Environmental Command, will similarly host Iloilo City Barangay Captains for a half-day information education campaign on environmental issues and waste management as part of the partnership.

101 TREES PLANTED

“Iloilo City has always been committed in maximizing our potentials in protecting the environment to lessen the impacts of climate change, that is why we have put premium on environmental management,” Engineer Ravena said reading Mayor Treñas’ message.

Iloilo City has identified areas for cultivation of Tree Park Network across the city, including the Iloilo Beach Forest in Boulevard, Molo, Hinactacan Mangrove Forest in Jaro, and the Lanit Tree Park in Jaro for endemic species of trees, among others.

In line with this environmental thrust of Iloilo City, Injap Tower Hotel, led by Assistant Hotel Manager James Arthur Riego De Dios, and the Hotel 101 Group Sales and Marketing team, together with the Philippine Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Command (MEPCOM) Western Visayas, led by CG CDR Jonie G. Belarmino, trooped to Barangay Bito-on in Jaro, Iloilo City last September 11 to plant seedlings of different fruit-bearing trees like guyabano (soursop), coffee, and langka (jackfruit), as part of the 101 STAY GREEN program.

“Today’s successful 101 Tree Planting activity is just a start of more projects together with PCG and the Iloilo City towards sustainability and the environment,” Assistant Hotel Manager James Riego De Dios said.

“Hotel 101 Group is committed to making small collective efforts in promoting Sustainable Tourism through the 101 STAY GREEN program and beyond,” GM Gomez said. “As tourism is one of the contributors to Climate Change, we strongly advocate for reducing our carbon footprint, operating more sustainably, and supporting the communities where we are located,” she added.

Department of Tourism Western Visayas Regional Director Ms. Cristine Mansinares stressed to continue to promote a safe, fun and sustainable tourism and to amplify what Hotel 101 Group is doing as an inspiration to others. “These partnerships and campaign will certainly help increase awareness among guests on pressing environmental concerns, and gradually change behaviors,” Regional Director Mansinares added.

The Hotel 101 Group is a subsidiary of DoubleDragon Corporation, which operates Hotel 101, Injap Tower Hotel in Iloilo City, and Jinjiang Inn Philippines. Hotel 101 Group has recently unveiled its direction to begin expanding abroad. It aims to make Hotel 101 the first global Filipino hotel chain.

Aware of the hard work and risks of the medical health professionals, Hotel 101 Group and DoubleDragon Corporation donated 100 MerryMart Grocery packs to the medical frontliners of Pasay City.

Personally led by Hotel 101 Group General Manager Gel Gomez and joined by her team, they turned over the donation yesterday to Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano.

For her part, Mayor Emi expressed her utmost gratitude on behalf of the City’s health frontliners for the generosity of the DD Group and Hotel 101. “We are grateful for your donation to our barangay medical health workers, who are those greatly affected by the pandemic, and who would really benefit from these MerryMart grocery packs.”

Meanwhile, Gel Gomez, Hotel 101 Group General Manager lauds the efforts of the Pasay local government unit in its fight to keep COVID-19 numbers low in the city, and its effort and a full roll-out of its vaccination program.

“We thank the local government unit of Pasay City for including the employees of hotels in its priority vaccination program and also for Hotel 101-Manila being used for quarantine facility. We are committed to support both the national and local government to contain the spread of the virus and through proper caring of our guests as accredited quarantine facility,” Gomez said. “Currently, majority of Hotel 101-Manila employees are fully vaccinated already,” she added.

Hotel 101 Group is the hospitality arm of DoubleDragon Corporation, with Hotel 101-Manila being utilized as a mandatory quarantine facility in Pasay City. Hotel 101 Group operates other hotels, such as Jinjiang Inn – Ortigas, Jinjiang Inn – Makati, Jinjiang Inn – Boracay Station 1, and Injap Tower Hotel in Iloilo City.
