By Robert B. Roque, Jr.

Nothing can be more inspiring today than Filipino superathlete Carlos Yulo’s historic achievement for the country: 2 Gold medals in the Olympics.

And to think that before Pinay weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz became Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020 (an Olympics staged in 2021 due to the pandemic), our nation did not even know the taste of gold.

It took a long while for us to realize what our national sports program needed to be in medal contention and even a longer time and the awareness of globalization to pursue what was required: exposure to international training and events.

Even now, most of our world-class athletes rally on the sheer power of rigorous training and determination. Very few are lucky to have strategic investments required to make them champions.

Now that we see the likes of Caloy Yulo and his magnificent triumph in Paris, the government must examine his journey to the top and be willing to replicate that formula in the programs it funds not just for our brightest athletes, but as a national program for our youth.

Firing Line believes a strong and energized youth sports program combats at least three of my pet peeve social ills: drugs and extreme wokeness.

Don’t get me wrong, I commend recent efforts by our government to uplift the quality of its sports development programs. Perhaps, it even deserves mentioning that the success of Yulo and other Filipino athletes who made it to Paris 2024 could be partly a reflection of the growing effectiveness of our sports programs in recent years.

Allow me to give a shoutout to Paranaque Representative Gus Tambunting, for example, who had pushed for the institutionalization of the Philippine National Games through House Bill 8468. This is a gold-worthy effort in Congress since grassroots sports development is crucial in identifying and cultivating our future Olympians.

Tambunting has also proposed in House Bill 6746 the expansion of incentives for athletes and coaches to recognize the hard work and dedication they put into training — a must in order to excel in sports. By supporting our athletes not just financially, but also through a well-structured and incentivized system, the Philippines can continue to build on its recent successes, of course, bannered by Yulo.

Naturally, our Golden Boy will be showered with so much love when he returns to Manila, and along with that would be a great amount of well-deserved incentives. Many reactions in this day and age would probably be, “Sana all!” Mine would be, “Sana tax-free.” I hope the government stays true and audacious in ensuring that these rewards all go to our champ and our other Olympians who reap medals.

I agree with Tambunting, who has sponsored House Bill 5067 — and I believe many of you would find this is both timely and necessary — in order to seek tax exemptions on donations directly allocated to sports development.

If we do so, we would not only provide much-needed financial support for our athletes but also create a more sustainable model for sports development in the country.

The bill’s provision to make such contributions tax-deductible is a strategic move that could significantly increase private sector involvement in funding and nurturing homegrown athletic talent.

By Robert B. Roque, Jr.

It seems all of us can’t get enough of Hidilyn Diaz these days – and for good reason. Having ended the country’s 97-year gold drought in the Olympics and in record-breaking fashion, she deserves all the love and adoration.

Her Calvary-like climb to the top also draws needed attention to the sorry state of our government’s sports development program that, perhaps, pounds our promising athletes more to the ground than propels them to victory.

Now, of course, Hidilyn is past all the stumbling blocks and nasty challenges – horrors which President Duterte told her she should forget, saying “bygones should be bygones.” Yes, the government is giving her at least P10 million, along with a host of other pledges and tax exemptions for other gifts from the private sector.

But giving them now to our Olympic champ, who has proven to be the strongest lady weightlifter in the world, should not bury government’s misgivings, for it only keeps our leaders in denial.

Painfully, this places the mirror of truth before all of us, reflecting an image of Filipinos who love and admire winners but lack the empathy and support for athletes still struggling to make our nation’s Olympic dreams a reality.

Those who compete and lose today may have a greater chance at gold tomorrow if our government and we don’t abandon them just because they’re not in the spotlight. Let’s hope we’re not all in denial.

*         *         *

Being in denial prevails not only in sports but also in admitting that the Delta variant of COVID-19 has long developed into a community transmission in Metro Manila.

Despite the sharp daily increase in cases, the projections, and the assumption of experts from OCTA Research group, the Department of Health (DOH) chooses to delay the call even if it knows its latest tally of new Delta variant cases is based on specimens submitted three weeks prior.

The later it is called serves no benefit to the public and only delays the appropriate response required from local government units (LGUs) and healthcare facilities concerned. So why be tentative when the situation calls for us to act fast against a fast-spreading contagion?

By Robert B. Roque, Jr.

As ludicrous as it was for Hidilyn Diaz to have been tagged in a “matrix” of a supposed plot to oust the President in 2019, her historic win in the Olympics Monday night did topple Duterte and his final SONA off Tuesday’s media headlines.

For that and her golden triumph in the Olympics, CONGRATULATIONS!

Woefully for this administration, even Duterte could not claim in his litany of alleged accomplishments strong support for Hidilyn’s dream-come-true of a gold medal – the Philippines’ first in all 32 stagings of the quadrennial world games.

Since she won the silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Hidilyn has given more of herself to the country and the sport, even using her own resources for a village gym in her hometown Mampang, Zamboanga City to introduce weightlifting to young aspiring athletes. She was generous even if her own training sorely lacked funding.

Her one-time plea on social media since winning the gold in the 2018 Asian Games to support her and our country’s once-impossible quest for an Olympic gold went sideways. Thanks to our very own kababayans who insulted her, accused her of blowing away her medal winnings, and condemned her for supposedly throwing shade on the government as if this administration thrived on an immaculate image.

Many of us Filipinos who now participate in the joy of her victory in Tokyo owe her to read up on the truth to get our facts straight about our first Olympic champion. Perhaps, doing so could even fix our crooked political views often based on deception like many rambling parts of the last SONA we heard.

On Monday, when Hidilyn clinched gold, she also set an Olympic record with her lifting a 224-kilogram total. Her feat trumped that of the highly-favored representative of China. Wasn’t that extra sweet to watch, especially after our spirits to assert our claim and international tribunal victory over China in the West Philippine Sea had been shot down by our very own president’s speech hours earlier?

In the moments after clearing her final lift, Hidilyn’s every action and gesture was brimming with national pride, waving multiple times to all the Filipinos that could see and singing every lyric of the Philippine anthem played for the first time in Olympic history. It reminds all 110 million Pinoys that victory is real even if the odds are stacked against us, even if the best of the whole world competed against us. Without a 2-1/2-hour speech or even a single word, Hidilyn conveyed that message loud and clear.

That’s why Hidilyn’s first gold medal is worth the banner headline over Duterte’s last SONA.

On Monday, Hidilyn Diaz bagged the Philippines’ first-ever Olympic gold medal with a victory in the 55-kg class weightlifting competition, putting an end to an almost century-long drought for the country.

Since this historic achievement, fans have rallied behind her on Facebook and Instagram with their overflowing support and recognition for the Filipina weightlifter. With these, the four-time Olympian is currently the most-mentioned athlete on Facebook and the third most-mentioned on Instagram across the globe over the past 24 hours. Hidilyn overtook American gymnast Simone Biles and Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal.

Over this same period, Facebook also reports that the Philippines sits as the country that talks most about the Olympics on the platform, besting the United States and India. The Philippine flag emoji also landed a podium finish, ranking as the third most-used emoji on the app during the same period.

It is customary to put highlight inspiring stories in the sports especially for sports lover Filipinos across the world.

The Philippine Business and News would like to focus on Top 5 Stories that give honor and pride to the country in the international scene.

While we do not downplay the local sports that became talk of the town such as the UP Fighting Maroons entering into finals after 32 years, and the back-to-back champion of Ateneo in UAAP and the “three-peat” of San Beda Red Lions in NCCA. They are all exciting and fun, no doubt about it.

But due to the wider audience of our online publication with 194 countries reach, we would like to feature the sports that we deem newsworthy in the year 2018 and have proven our sports prowess and capabilities in the international community.

Here are the top 5 yearend stories for Philippines sports:

Top 1: Philippine Dragon Boat Team became the overall championship in the World Championships at Georgia.

The ICF World Dragon Boat Championships held at Gainesville, Georgia brought a record-setting 5-gold and 2-silver haul.

Under the tutelage of the President of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation Jonne Go and Head Coach Len Escollante, and their well disciplined team members, the unsung heroes with limited fund tearfully recalled the hard work, sacrifice and discipline that each and every one invested to ensure that they will bring honor to the country when they were practicing two to three times a day at Laguna de Bay. They dubbed their international dragon boat competition as #LabanParaSaBayan.

Top 2: Hidilyn Diaz’ delivered the first gold in 18th Asian Games in Jakarta

Capturing the women’s 53-kilograms event, Diaz outclassed Turkmenistan’s Kristina Shermetova (206kg) and Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao (201kg), and had a total lift of 207kg which brought the first gold for Philippines in the 2018 games.

Top 3: Fil-Am MMA Champion Brandon Vera as KOs Italian foe in just 1 minute

Admitting that his Italian challenger Mauro Cerrili is a “dangerous fighter”, Vera retained his ONE World heavyweight belt dubbed as “No Sweat” knockout when he delivered his fatal left hook that landed on Italian’s jaw that prompted the referee to stop the game.

Top 4: Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang regained his ONE Lightweight World Title

Former high school teacher turned mix martial art won a unanimous decision after a massive strike against Singaporean Amir Khan.

Folayang, a native of Baguio is no doubt the greatest Filipino mixed martial artist of all time. His first fight started on June 17, 2010 when he defeated Slovakian fighter Egon Racz in a Martial Combat.

Top 5: The Pacman returns, TKOs Matthysse and the new WBA Welterweight Champion

Returning after his July 2017 loss to Jeff Horn, Manny Pacquiao proved his dominance against the Argentine defending champion Lucas Matthysse with a seventh-round knockout and claimed the W.B.A. Welterweight title .

No one can question the power and speed that the Pambansang Kamao has that even surprised Matthysse when he was down via TKO (Technical Knock Out) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
