As war in the Middle East intensifies, the Philippines is finding renewed urgency in its partnerships with Nordic nations — anchored not just on trade and diplomacy, but on shared principles of peace, humanitarian response, and a rules-based international order.

Speaking at the inaugural Nordic Day celebration on March 23, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo Herrera-Lim framed the gathering not as a ceremonial occasion, but as a moment shaped by crisis.

“There are moments in diplomacy when one must set aside the pleasantries and speak plainly about the weight of the world. This is one of those moments,” he said.

Herrera-Lim did not mince words on the situation in the Middle East, particularly the humanitarian devastation unfolding in Gaza.

“The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has produced a humanitarian catastrophe that none of us… can view with indifference,” he said, pointing to images of “children, hospitals, entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble” as a stark indictment of global inaction.

With tens of thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Israel, Lebanon, and nearby areas, the government has been forced into sustained emergency response mode.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs has been working around the clock — and I use that phrase not as a figure of speech — to monitor their safety, facilitate repatriations, and provide consular assistance,” Herrera-Lim said.

“We are proud of that work. We also know it is never enough when people are in danger,” he said.

Against this backdrop, the Nordic countries — Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland — have emerged as key partners aligned with the Philippines’ stance on humanitarian protection and diplomacy.

Herrera-Lim highlighted Norway’s long-standing role in peacebuilding, noting that “diplomacy must be pursued even when — especially when — it is inconvenient.”

He also cited Sweden and Denmark’s humanitarian contributions, as well as Finland’s consistent advocacy for international humanitarian law in multilateral forums.

“The Nordic countries have been among the most principled voices on this crisis,” he said.

This alignment reflects deeper shared values between Manila and the Nordic bloc, particularly a commitment to civilian protection, humanitarian access, and long-term peace.

“The Philippines shares these convictions,” Herrera-Lim stressed. “We have called for an immediate, sustained ceasefire… unimpeded humanitarian access… [and] the protection of civilians, all civilians, as a non-negotiable principle.”

Beyond the humanitarian dimension, the war is also reshaping economic realities for the Philippines — underscoring the interconnectedness that defines modern diplomacy.

Disruptions in Red Sea shipping lanes have driven up costs and delayed exports bound for Europe, a key market. At the same time, uncertainty in Gulf economies has affected remittances from Filipino workers.

“These are not abstractions,” Herrera-Lim said. “They are the monthly budgets of Filipino families.”

The convergence of these pressures — humanitarian, economic, and geopolitical — has elevated the importance of reliable international partnerships, including those with Nordic countries known for stability and adherence to global norms.

At the heart of the Philippines-Nordic connection is a shared belief in the rules-based international order — an increasingly fragile framework in today’s volatile geopolitical landscape.

“On this, the Philippines and the Nordic nations speak with one voice: the rules-based international order is not optional,” Herrera-Lim said.

“It is the architecture that protects the small, the vulnerable, and the far-away,” he added.

Mr. Alexandre Ferry and Amb. Saija Nurminen, Finland; Mme. Eva Fischer Mellbin and Amb. Franz-Michael Mellbin, Denmark

His message was clear: when international law is undermined in one region, the consequences are global — and disproportionately borne by those least equipped to absorb them.

“When it is violated anywhere, it is weakened everywhere,” he added. “And when it is weakened, it is always the most vulnerable who pay the price first.”

The Nordic Day celebration, while symbolic, reflects a broader shift in Philippine diplomacy — toward deeper engagement with partners that share its values amid global uncertainty.

As conflict reshapes trade routes, strains labor markets, and tests international institutions, the Philippines is looking to alliances that go beyond transactional ties.

In the words of Herrera-Lim, this is not just about diplomacy, it is about confronting “the weight of the world” together.

And in that weight, the Philippines and the Nordic nations appear increasingly aligned.

As tensions in the Middle East ripple through global energy markets and disrupt long-standing trade flows, the Philippines is quietly strengthening ties with a different set of partners — countries that offer not just capital and technology, but a shared commitment to rules, resilience, and reform.

At the first Nordic Day celebration on March 24, diplomats from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden — joined by Iceland — outlined a partnership that is increasingly strategic in a world where supply chains are uncertain and geopolitical risks are rising.

The message was clear: as traditional trade mechanisms come under strain, smaller but stable economies like the Nordics are becoming vital anchors.

H.E. Franz-Michael Mellbin, Ambassador of Denmark to the Philippines.

For Ambassador Franz Michael Melbin of Denmark, the Nordic relationship with the Philippines rests on something deeper than trade: “The Nordic family represents eight flags and five countries, yet we are united by something deeper: trust.”

He said that this trust, rooted in democratic values, accountability, and inclusion, forms the backbone of cooperation: “Our relationship with the Philippines is not defined by distance, but by our joint direction… a belief that international partnerships can improve the welfare and prosperity of our peoples together.”

That alignment is becoming more critical as global instability, both from war-driven oil shocks and protectionist trade policies, forces countries like the Philippines to diversify partners.

H.E. Saija Nurminen, Ambassador of Finland to the Philippines.

Security, sovereignty, and a fragile rules-based order

The shifting geopolitical landscape was addressed more directly by Ambassador Saija Nurminen of Finland, who warned that the global system itself is under pressure: “In a world where security guarantees can resemble racketeering, and free trade is hampered by tariffs — cooperation in defense and security has never been more important.”

She pointed to flashpoints from Ukraine to the West Philippine Sea, underscoring that peace must be actively defended: “Peace is not a gift granted, but a right upheld — and too often a struggle fought.”

She also praised Philippines’ own stance, particularly its support for Ukraine and adherence to UNCLOS, s part of a broader effort to uphold international law.

But Finland’s ambassador said newer threats are also emerging: “Both the Philippines and the Nordic countries are targets of… cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and intimidation.”

In this context, digital resilience and security cooperation are becoming just as important as traditional diplomacy.

Trade, jobs, and a ‘vote of confidence’ in PH

Beyond shared values, the Nordic presence in the Philippines is increasingly economic, and tangible.

Christian Halaas Lyster, Ambassador of Norway to the Philippines.

According to Ambassador Christian Halaas Lyster of Norway, Nordic companies are trading and investing: “Many Nordic businesses are not only here to trade; they are investing in new jobs and opportunities… within advanced and cutting-edge high technology sectors.”

He said these investments already employ tens of thousands of Filipinos across industries — from maritime and renewable energy to digital services: “Our trade is thus not just the exchange of goods, but the exchange of opportunity and transformation.”

This reflects a broader pattern: Nordic firms are drawn to the Philippines’ young workforce, growing market, and strategic location, while Manila looks to the Nordics for high-quality, sustainable investments.

From green energy to digital governance

Anna Ferry, Ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines.

The scope of cooperation is also expanding rapidly.

For Anna Ferry of the Embassy of Sweden, the partnership is increasingly future-oriented: “Together, we can support digitalization of public services and a modern health care system for all… reshape the shipping industry… and help position the Philippines as a leader in the energy transition.”

Nordic countries are global leaders in renewable energy, smart cities, and sustainable mining — areas where the Philippines is seeking both investment and expertise.

But Ferry stressed that economic ties alone are not enough: “The strongest bridges between nations are built not of steel, but of people.”

Indeed, one of the most enduring links between the Philippines and the Nordics is human. Around 18,000 Filipinos live in Norway, many in maritime professions. Nordic countries are also increasingly looking to Filipino workers to address labor shortages, while tourism and cultural exchanges continue to grow from a small base.

Institutions like the Nordic Chamber of Commerce reflect this momentum, supporting expanding business activity across sectors — from wind energy and shipping to healthcare and digital infrastructure.

The timing of this deepening engagement is not accidental.

As conflict in the Middle East threatens fuel supply stability and raises costs for energy-importing countries like the Philippines, and as global trade faces fragmentation, the need for reliable, rules-based partners has become urgent.

The Nordic model of open markets combined with strong social protections, innovation, and sustainability offers a compelling alternative.

As Ambassador Ferry put it: “The Nordic choice is cooperation over fragmentation, and partnership over isolation.”

For the Philippines, that choice has become essential.

The European Union has committed a total of €22.6 million (₱1.536 billion) in new development assistance to accelerate the Philippines’ digital transition, following the signing of the EU-Philippines Digital Economy Package Wednesday (19 November 2025).

The package includes €20 million (₱1.36 billion) directly from the EU, plus €2 million (₱136 million) from Finland and €600,000 (₱40.8 million) from France. The partnership aims to strengthen key areas of the country’s digital ecosystem: 5G policy support, cybersecurity, digital connectivity, and AI-powered earth observation technologies.

According to a news release from the EU Delegation in Manila, the initiative forms part of Global Gateway, the EU’s worldwide strategy to expand smart, clean, and secure digital, energy, and transport networks and reinforce research, education, and health systems.

Copernicus. PHOTO FROM EU

EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro said the substantial funding reflects Europe’s commitment “to support digital technology for societal advancement,” adding that the partnership will accelerate “inclusive and sustainable digital transformation” in the Philippines.

Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go said this will impact the country’s disaster preparedness, noting that the project will enable high-speed, real-time access to Copernicus satellite data. “This will allow the government to better prepare for natural disasters, respond faster in times of crisis, and provide immediate relief to Filipino families. And we need this now more than ever,” he said.

A major component of the cooperation is the expanded EU Copernicus Philippines program, which uses satellite earth observation and AI analytics to guide government action on disaster risk reduction, environmental management, food security, and infrastructure mapping. Increased access to Copernicus data is expected to boost both public sector decision-making and private sector productivity.

The partnership will also deepen cooperation between EU and Philippine universities in science, technology, and innovation, particularly in frontier tech fields.

In addition, the package supports the Philippines’ transition to next-generation connectivity by strengthening 5G policies, expanding international and domestic digital links, and building robust cybersecurity frameworks to protect critical infrastructure.

The program will be jointly implemented by the Philippine Space Agency, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the Office of Civil Defense, together with European counterparts.

The European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) 2025 once again opens doors for Filipino students aspiring to experience the world-class education offered by European universities.

Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines, together with the Embassies of EU Member States, EHEF 2025 highlights new academic pathways, collaborations, and opportunities for Filipinos seeking to pursue higher learning in Europe.

For the first time, Latvia, Romania, and Slovakia will join EHEF’s expanding network of participating EU Member States—offering Filipino students an even broader range of programs and academic disciplines to explore.

This year’s fair will also feature institutions from the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, and Sweden, showcasing Europe’s diverse and globally recognized educational landscape.

More than 97 European higher education institutions, embassies, and cultural organizations will take part in this year’s fair—providing direct engagement with students, educators, and researchers from across the Philippines.

New Programmes and Deepened Collaboration

EHEF 2025 introduces several new programme sessions, including presentations from the Copernicus Programme—the EU’s flagship Earth Observation initiative—and EURAXESS, which supports researcher mobility and career development.

A special session on Erasmus+ Capacity Building for Higher Education (CBHE) will highlight the EU’s ongoing commitment to innovation, collaboration, and capacity-building within the Philippine higher education system.

Focused information sessions will further connect academic and institutional groups, ensuring greater alignment and impact for participants and partner schools.

EU’s Continued Commitment to Education and Cultural Exchange

“Each year, EHEF grows not just in size but also in depth. With new EU Member States joining and new programme sessions expanding our offerings, we are opening more pathways for Filipino students and researchers to connect, learn, and thrive in the EU,” said H.E. Massimo Santoro, European Union Ambassador to the Philippines.

“This reflects the EU’s continuous dedication to making education a bridge between nations and cultures,” he added.

Throughout the fair, participating universities and EU representatives will present a wide array of degree programs, scholarships, and research opportunities designed to support Filipino students in pursuing their academic goals in Europe.

Why Study in the EU?

Studying in the European Union means more than just earning a degree—it’s about discovering the world through knowledge and culture. Students can learn new languages, immerse themselves in diverse communities, and engage with programs rooted in innovation, inclusivity, and real-world application.

EU universities empower students to explore their passions beyond traditional disciplines, nurturing future leaders with global perspectives.

The Nordic Embassies in Manila and Tetra Pak Philippines have teamed up to launch the “Cartons for Communities and Nordic Waste Classification System” in select elementary and high schools in Pasig City — a joint effort to inspire the next generation to take the lead in circular economy solutions, the embassies said in a media release.

As cities like Pasig strive to manage post-consumer waste, including food and beverage packaging, the private sector is stepping up. Tetra Pak, a Swedish packaging solutions company, is among the frontrunners.

Through its Cartons for Communities program, Tetra Pak partners with schools, private communities, and local government units (LGUs) to promote the segregation and recycling of used beverage cartons (UBCs). These UBCs are upcycled into durable boards that can be turned into chairs, tables, and other everyday essentials.

H.E. Anna Ferry, Ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines. PHOTO FROM THE EMBASSY OF SWEDEN IN MANILA

Five schools — Pinagbuhatan Elementary School, Pasig Elementary School, Eusebio High School, Pasig Science High School, and Rizal High School — will pilot the initiative. Each school will receive collection bins made from recycled cartons, where students can deposit rinsed and flattened UBCs for recycling.

An interschool competition will also be held, rewarding the schools that collect the most cartons. Students will earn incentives for their participation, reinforcing the idea that sustainability starts with small, consistent actions.

At the launch event, students and teachers explored the science behind Tetra Pak’s signature cartons — made of 70% paperboard, 25% plastic, and 5% aluminum — and learned how each component can be recycled.

From left: Ms. Catherine Chua, Sustainability Manager, Tetra Pak Philippines; Hon. Anna Ferry, Ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines; Mr. Allendri B. Angeles from Pasig City Solid Waste Management Office. PHOTO FROM THE EMBASSY OF SWEDEN IN MANILA

The city government’s Solid Waste Management Office also rolled out the local adaptation of the Danish waste classification system, following a recent Pasig delegation’s study visit to Denmark and Sweden. The system, which will be piloted in Pasig schools, aims to reward proper segregation of recyclable waste such as plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, and paper.

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto underscored the importance of proper waste disposal in preventing flooding. He reminded students that “keeping trash off the streets helps prevent clogged drainage systems and reduces flooding in our neighborhoods,” adding that while the local government has a key role, citizens — starting with students — are equally vital in maintaining a clean city.

Swedish Ambassador Anna Ferry shared how Sweden instills recycling habits early in life: “In Sweden, kids learn about waste segregation and recycling at an early age at home. This continues in preschool and grade school, where they are taught about the deposit return system for cans and bottles or panta in Swedish. This project with Tetra Pak is similar to this, and a great start to learn about the circular economy model.”

Mr. Albert Del Fonso, Tetra Pak Philippines Site Manager. PHOTO FROM THE EMBASSY OF SWEDEN IN MANILA

Tetra Pak Philippines Packaging Portfolio Director and Site Manager Albert del Fonso emphasized the program’s long-term goal:

“At Tetra Pak, we believe that empowering the next generation is key to building a more sustainable future. Through the Cartons for Communities program, we are proud to work alongside the Nordic Embassies and Pasig City to help students become champions of the circular economy. By learning how to recycle and upcycle used beverage cartons, these young leaders are not only protecting the environment—they’re shaping a culture of sustainability in their schools and communities.”

Also supporting the event was Flying Tiger Copenhagen, a Danish retail company that has embraced sustainability and circularity in its design, production, and packaging processes, with several stores now established across the Philippines.

Dr. Jay F. The collection bins, made from recycled Tetra Pak cartons, were donated to 5 schools in Pasig City. PHOTO FROM THE EMBASSY OF SWEDEN IN MANILA

The Pasig project forms part of the Nordic Initiative on Circular Economy, supported by the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish Embassies in Manila — regions globally recognized for innovation in sustainable practices.

In 2024, the Nordic embassies and the Pasig City government signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the city’s transition to a circular economy. Earlier this year, Pasig representatives visited Denmark and Sweden to study best practices on waste management and recycling — lessons now taking root in local schools.

Finland as new co-chair of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) says it will focus on women in journalism and media education.

At a dinner reception in Manila Wednesday, Finnish Ambassador Saija Nurminen said that Finland’s formally assumption of the MFC co-chairmanship alongside Germany reinforces its longstanding commitment to media freedom and human rights.

“It doesn’t come [as] a surprise to anyone who knows anything about Finland that we will focus particularly on women journalists,” Nurminen said.

“But also we would like to try to strengthen media literacy—that is another baby of ours—and we’ll try to do something with that as well,” she added.

The Media Freedom Coalition is a global alliance of 51 countries that supports journalists at risk, advocates for free and independent media, and works closely with legal experts and civil society groups to uphold press freedom around the world.

The event brought together diplomatic allies and media practitioners, including German Ambassador Dr. Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke, Canadian Ambassador David Hartman, and Ukrainian Ambassador Yuliia Fediv, as well as journalists from THEPHILBIZNEWS, Rappler, Inquirer.net, Philippine Star, and ABS-CBN News.

The intimate gathering also became a venue for dialogue on the Philippines’ current media environment, with participants exchanging ideas on how Finland can steer its MFC role effectively while upholding journalist safety and democratic values.

Ambassador Nurminen did not shy away from addressing the challenges journalists face in the Philippines, which continues to be considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for members of the press.

This assessment aligns with a recent statement from UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan, who described the Philippines as “one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.” According to UNESCO, 117 journalists have been killed in the country over the past 30 years, with 81 of those cases remain unsolved.

Finland’s new role in the MFC also coincides with its 2025 Chairpersonship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), a role it intends to use to further human rights advocacy, particularly in support of Ukraine.

As part of its OSCE chairmanship, Finland hosted a commemorative conference on July 31 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act and reaffirm its relevance in today’s geopolitical and human rights challenges.

A milestone in this regard is the Helsinki Final Act, signed in 1975 by 35 countries, including the US, Canada, the Soviet Union, and all European states (except Albania). The agreement laid the foundation for post–Cold War diplomacy by committing signatories to respect human rights, sovereign borders, peaceful conflict resolution, and the right to self-determination. It remains a cornerstone of Finland’s foreign policy and multilateral engagement.

“And [it is important for] fundamental rights to have freedom of speech. For us, we also tie that to comprehensive security, [which is] a concept that is very dear to us in Finland,” Nurminen said.

In a podcast hosted by Iida Silvola, Finnish Ambassador to the Philippines Saija Nurminen shares in a recent episode of International Politics & Economics Association (IPEA) the role of diplomacy, Finland’s approach in international affairs, and what it truly means to be a woman leading in global affairs.

From podium to IPEA podcast, here’s how Her Excellency started her career and is now forging Finland’s unique presence across the globe.

“I knew early on that I wanted to become a lawyer, partly because in our family, there are a lot of lawyers. I was interested in social affairs, history, and topics like that… and in law school, I realized that I want to work in the public sector.”

“When I graduated, I didn’t think foreign relations as such something that I would do,” she says. She decided to have an exchange semester in Uppsala, Sweden, initially just thinking about improving her Swedish.

The ambassador recalls how most of the law students had their summer job when she came back to Helsinki; and she saw an opportunity posting for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs unit—an internship under the First Finnish EU Presidency.

“I was the only applicant. The director asked me: Why are you the only one who’s here, applying for this position? I said: Everybody else [has] already their summer jobs. And then I got in. And the rest is history… and then I basically did my whole career being in the foreign service.”

The ambassador has served as a seasoned diplomat in foreign service postings from Washington to Manila.

PHOTO FROM MALACANANG

“The privilege to change the theme and the topics in every 3-4 years is, of course, what sort of keeps this working life interesting.”

She has been to:

Washington, DC, where she worked in trade & economic issues, climate change, energy, environment, and domestic politics

Brussels, Belgium, where she joined EU working group in the Middle East and North Africa

Berlin, Germany, where she was honed in Middle Eastern issues and migration, interior affairs

Helsinki, Finland

International Criminal Court (ICC) | “I was in the legal department. And that was the first time in 15 years when I, as a lawyer, did any legal work in the MFA.”

Director for Human Resources Unit

Then she applied to Asia.

“I was thinking that this is the time to go to this side of the globe—and I was lucky to get a posting here in the Philippines. So I’ve almost gone through the globe and done almost different kinds of subjects when it comes to foreign policy.”

The envoy shares the main priorities of Finland in strengthening its ties with the Philippines:

Investments – “deepening our bilateral trade relations”

Labor mobility – Finland needs more skilled workers, from welders to green jobs

Respect for the rule of international law

The ambassador believes that more women diplomats are emerging in the field. True to its core, Finland is committed to being at the forefront of an inclusive workplace.

“I usually chose male mentor, and only because I thought that it’s always good to have different point of views. Men and women think differently, or approach topics differently. I consciously navigated the system that way, even if I don’t think that’s a disadvantage—being a woman.”

Finnish Ambassador to the Philippines Saija Nurminen. PHOTO FROM ECCP

“It’s not about being a man or a woman, it’s about the whole society.”

The ambassador holds very definitive opinions:

On the right to vote and a universal school system, “We try to educate everyone because we have to have as many participants as possible. Now we are one of the wealthiest and safest countries in the world, and a stable democracy — I think that is quite [a] powerful narrative to say: ‘We did it.’”

“Where we are now is because of these policy directions that we made and had everyone involved. Every country’s foreign policy lies on its domestic policy.”

On Finnish diplomatic initiatives of and for women: Development cooperation & aid (girls’ education), finance organizations like UN Women, resolutions in the EU or UN, 40% of crisis management experts are women, and more!

BONUS: Book tip from Ambassador Saija Nurminen — Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 by Christopher Clark.

From representation to an inclusive call to action, Finland offers much more than being known as the happiest country. And perhaps driven by the same values and proactive engagements in the system, Finnish diplomacy continues to thrive… making its own legacy, one policy at a time.

In a dazzling celebration of Europe Day, Alliance Française de Manille opened its doors to art enthusiasts and Europhiles alike with a captivating photo exhibition titled “Memento: A Journey Through Europe.”

On May 9, the venue was transformed into an immersive visual experience, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestries and diverse histories of seven European countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Sweden.

As guests arrived for the vernissage, they were greeted by a collection of stunning photographs curated to highlight each country’s distinctive beauty—from breathtaking landscapes and architectural marvels to the people and traditions that define them. The event brought together a vibrant crowd of diplomats, art lovers, and curious minds eager to connect with Europe in all its multifaceted glory.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

The photo exhibitions were a collaboration between the embassies of these European nations, each bringing a unique perspective on their culture, heritage, and values.

Romania’s contribution was a visual love letter to its identity, as Ambassador Răduţa Dana Matache eloquently explained. The exhibition spans five key elements of Romania’s essence: spirituality, nature, highways, arts, and culture. Visitors were transported to Romania’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, like the painted churches, while the iconic Transfăgărășan highway—dubbed one of the most spectacular in the world—took center stage.

Ambassador Saija Nurminen of Finland shared how three carefully selected images showcased Finland’s unique influence in the Philippines, including the enduring legacy of Nokia phones and Armi Kuusela, the first-ever Miss Universe, who married a Filipino. Finland’s connection with the Philippines was depicted through vibrant cultural milestones, underscoring the 70-year diplomatic bond between the two nations.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

Ambassador Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin of Denmark presented images that reflected Denmark’s commitment to sustainability, well-being, and the art of “slow living.” Visitors could appreciate Denmark’s emphasis on biking as a sustainable and joyful mode of transport, while rural landscapes stood in stark contrast to the bustling urban life of Copenhagen.

The Austrian Embassy’s display was a harmonious blend of art and tradition, featuring images of the legendary Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss and vibrant theatrical performances that celebrate Austria’s rich artistic heritage. The collection offered a window into both the country’s past and its modern creative spirit.

Poland’s contribution invited viewers to explore the majestic natural beauty of the country, from the golden glow of the Golden Cave to the tranquil Kamieńczyk Waterfall—testaments to Poland’s breathtaking geology and lush landscapes.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

Swedish Ambassador Anna Pernilla Ferry brought Sweden’s captivating traditions to life, with one of the highlights being the story of the Sami people. With only about 20,000 Sami residing in Sweden, their rich cultural heritage—complete with their own language, flag, and parliament—was beautifully captured in the exhibition. Eco-tourism, folk costumes, and Midsummer traditions were among the key images that showcased Sweden’s commitment to sustainability and heritage preservation.

The Italian Embassy’s photographs served as a reminder to savor the moment, as Ambassador Davide Giglio aptly noted. Italy’s exhibition celebrated its timeless art, food, and culture, urging everyone to experience life as it happens rather than through the lens of a camera.

Open to the public from May 1 to 31, “Memento: A Journey Through Europe” offers a rare opportunity to explore the many facets of European life in one place. Don’t miss out on this breathtaking visual journey at Alliance Française de Manille, located at 209 Nicanor Garcia II, Makati City. It’s not just a photo exhibition—it’s an invitation to experience Europe through the eyes of its people, its artists, and its unique cultural heritage.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

For those who cherish art, culture, and the stories told through images, this exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to connect with Europe in all its splendor.

A delegation from the Philippines recently embarked on a week-long study visit to the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway, and answer the title question.

The delegation included representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the City Government of Pasig.

Their mission: to learn from some of the world’s most innovative circular economy practices and explore ways to adopt these methods back home.

What lessons did a delegation from the Philippines learn during their study visit that they can adopt back home?

How do these nations integrate sustainability, community engagement, and policy reform into their circular economy models?

From left: Dr. Francis Baleta, S&T Fellow, DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development; John Macneil Mendoza, Trade and Public Diplomacy Officer, Royal Danish Embassy Manila; Atty.
Can environmental responsibility and economic growth go hand in hand, as demonstrated by these global leaders in circularity?

Denmark manages waste in smarter way

One of the most remarkable examples of circular economy practices that the Philippine delegation witnessed in Denmark was the Amager Bakke, or Copenhill, a waste-to-energy facility that also functions as a recreational area, complete with a skiing slope.

Located in Copenhagen, this multi-functional plant exemplifies the idea of turning waste into valuable resources, with the added benefit of providing citizens with a sustainable, green space.

The city’s innovative waste management systems and infrastructure were on full display, and the delegation was particularly impressed by Denmark’s efficiency in combining environmental sustainability with social utility.

Another standout was the reverse vending machine technology developed by Norwegian company Tomra. These machines allow consumers to return beverage bottles and cans in exchange for a deposit refund, further promoting recycling and waste reduction in urban centers.

Mayumi Narongin-Fujikawa from the Sjöstadsverket Water Innovation Centre in Stockholm, Sweden, one of the world’s leading research and development facilities for wastewater management. PHOTOS FROM THE NORDIC EMBASSIES IN THE PHILIPPINES

This simple yet effective solution was highlighted as an important strategy that could easily be implemented in the Philippines to encourage consumer participation in the circular economy.

Swede tech leads in water and waste management

Sweden, similarly, showcased its commitment to sustainability with groundbreaking solutions in water management and waste treatment.

The delegation visited the Sjöstadsverket Water Innovation Centre in Stockholm, a globally recognized research and development facility dedicated to advancing wastewater treatment technologies.

Here, delegates were introduced to cutting-edge research that enhances water recycling processes and reduces environmental impact, a critical challenge for urbanizing nations like the Philippines.

Furthermore, Sweden’s commitment to extended producers’ responsibility (EPR) and deposit return systems were evident in the smooth operation of such policies in urban centers like Stockholm.

These systems ensure that producers are responsible for the life cycle of their products, encouraging eco-friendly production and recycling initiatives from the very start.

Nordic countries approach circularity through collabs

While the technologies in place were impressive, what truly stood out to the Filipino delegation was the level of cross-sectoral collaboration that drives innovation and policy in the Nordic countries.

It was clear that both government and private sectors work closely together to create a unified vision for sustainability.

In Denmark and Sweden, non-profit organizations supported by public-private partnerships play a crucial role in advancing research, market testing, data collection, and evaluation.

This collaborative ecosystem fuels not only the adoption of advanced technologies but also fosters social behavioral changes necessary to support a circular economy.

The delegation also observed the importance of civic engagement in making these technologies successful.

In both Copenhagen and Stockholm, public education on sustainability practices is prioritized.

For instance, residents are educated on the importance of waste sorting and how their contributions help drive the circular economy.

This ongoing dialogue ensures that community involvement remains strong and that sustainability is seen as a shared responsibility.

Pasig City draws inspiration from study visit

For Pasig City, one of the main goals of the study visit was to explore how these Nordic innovations could be adapted to a local level.

Justina Kunickaite, Business Development Manager, at the Loop Forum Circular South Sweden booth.
The delegation was particularly impressed with how civic education, continuous communication, and social preparation are equally important as the technologies themselves.

This lesson is vital for Pasig, where creating awareness and understanding around circular economy practices will be key to their successful implementation.

“Nothing is truly unaffordable if industries, civil society, and the academe have a unified vision of the common good, and are willing to invest in it,” said the representatives from Pasig City.

Their experience in Denmark and Sweden reinforced the idea that when public and private sectors work together, they can create impactful, long-term solutions for the environment and society.

The integration of advanced waste management systems, water recycling technologies, and a strong focus on collaboration could help pave the way for a more sustainable and circular future in the Philippines—one that balances environmental responsibility with economic growth.
