San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has ramped up additional relief operations in Cebu, where thousands of residents remain in evacuation centers more than a week after Typhoon Tino struck on November 4.

The latest distribution is part of sustained support from both government and private sector partners as communities continue to deal with the typhoon’s heavy impact and the flooding that followed.

Employee-volunteers from San Miguel’s Cebu facilities distributed food packs — composed of San Miguel-produced goods and other essentials — across evacuation sites in Mandaue City, Cebu City, and the northern towns of Consolacion, Liloan, and Compostela.

SMC also deployed teams to provide clean, safe drinking water amid disrupted supply lines in several affected areas.

Local disaster officials report that many households remain displaced, with damaged homes and lost income delaying recovery efforts. Typhoon Tino hit just a month after a magnitude-6.9 earthquake rocked the province, worsening losses for families still trying to rebuild.

“Cebu has gone through challenges no community should experience in such quick succession. Our thoughts are with everyone there, including our own people, as they work to recover,” SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang said.

Meanwhile, employees across the San Miguel Group are raising funds through the Tulong para sa Pagbangon initiative to support families affected not only by Typhoon Tino but also Typhoon Uwan in other parts of the country.

The European Union (EU) has released €750,000 (over ₱50 million) in humanitarian aid to support relief efforts for communities affected by recent earthquakes in the Philippines.

In a statement Friday, the Delegation of EU in the Philippines expressed solidarity with families hit by the latest tremor that struck Mindanao Friday morning.

The European Union is closely “monitoring and assessing the situation for possible further assistance to families and communities affected by this new earthquake.”

A large portion of the €750,000 allocation will be directed toward providing emergency relief — including shelter, water, and sanitation — to the most affected populations, particularly those displaced from their homes.

Of this amount, €250,000 (₱16.8 million) will support the Philippine Red Cross in delivering cash assistance, tents, household items, and healthcare services to those most in need. The funds are part of the EU’s contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

This new funding adds to the €7.3 million (₱492.22 million) the EU has already committed this year for humanitarian aid and disaster preparedness in the Philippines, including €1.3 million (₱87.66 million) in response to tropical cyclones that struck the country in July and September.

The humanitarian assistance is coursed through European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), which coordinates EU relief operations worldwide.

With headquarters in Brussels and a global network of field offices, the EU helps millions of victims of conflict and disasters around the world every year, providing assistance to the most vulnerable people on the basis of humanitarian needs, the EU noted.

EU is also a signatory to a €12 million (over ₱809 million) agreement with IFRC to support the DREF mechanism, which provides fast-track funding for immediate disaster response.

More information on the EU’s humanitarian assistance is available at https://civil-protection-humanitarian-aid.ec.europa.eu/index_en and https://civil-protection-humanitarian-aid.ec.europa.eu/where/asia-and-pacific/philippines_en.

The European Union has released €800,000 (over ₱54 million) in humanitarian aid to help communities in the Philippines recover from recent tropical cyclones and floods that have battered large parts of the country in recent weeks.

The new assistance will support emergency relief operations in the hardest-hit areas—many of which are also grappling with long-running local conflicts—focusing on shelter, health services, and water and sanitation needs, according to the media release of the EU Delegation in the Philippines.

This latest aid package comes on top of €6.5 million (₱441.84 million) in humanitarian and disaster preparedness funding the EU has already committed to the Philippines this year. That includes €500,000 (₱34 million) released earlier in response to cyclones that struck in July.

The EU is also monitoring the situation in Cebu, which was hit by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake on September 30, leaving casualties and widespread damage.

“Our deepest sympathy and condolences for the victims who perished in the earthquake in Cebu. The EU stands in solidarity,” said EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro.

According to the European Commission, the funds will be channeled through its European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) department, which manages EU emergency responses around the world.

With headquarters in Brussels and a network of field offices across the globe, ECHO provides aid to millions of people affected by conflicts and disasters every year, prioritizing the most vulnerable based on humanitarian need.

Singapore has expressed solidarity with the Philippines following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu on September 30, leaving lives lost and widespread damage in its wake.

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong wrote to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on October 2, extending condolences on behalf of the Government of Singapore.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives and the widespread damage caused by the earthquake that struck northern Cebu. On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and my sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” Wong said in his letter.

A soldier from the Army’s 53rd Engineer Brigade retrieves a cadaver buried under a damaged building.
He added that Singapore, as a fellow ASEAN member and close friend of the Philippines, “stands ready to provide assistance for ongoing relief and recovery efforts.”

In addition, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) announced a donation of S$50,000 (US$38,800 or ₱2.2 million) to support emergency relief operations being carried out by the Philippine Red Cross. The funds will be used to meet urgent medical needs, water sanitation and hygiene programs, as well as mental health and psychosocial support for quake survivors.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Singapore said it is closely monitoring the situation and has reached out to e-registered Singaporeans in the affected areas to provide any necessary consular assistance.

So far, no Singaporeans have been reported injured. The MFA has advised its nationals in Cebu to remain vigilant, prepare for possible aftershocks, and heed local authorities’ safety advisories.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., meanwhile, ordered the release of over ₱200 million in assistance to local governments and hospitals in Cebu, including cash aid of ₱10,000 for displaced families and the establishment of a tent city for temporary shelter.

Marcos assured affected residents during his visit to Bogo City that the aid would not be a one-time effort. “We will continue to monitor…[and] coordinate with…the local leadership to make sure that maganda ang takbo ng ating rehabilitation,” he said.

Singapore’s gesture of solidarity adds to the growing international support for the Philippines as it recovers from one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Cebu in recent years.

Officials on Thursday (October 2) said the number of reported deaths from the massive earthquake has climbed to 72.
