On Sunday, May 17, 2026, the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium will turn into a vibrant Eurovision fan zone for “Pinag-Isa ng Musika”: The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 Live Viewing Party, an overnight screening from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. streamed direct from Vienna.

Presented by the Austrian Embassy Manila, in partnership with Pilipinas Calling and with the support of the National Parks Development Committee, the free event forms part of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Austria–Philippine relations.

One of the world’s longest-running and most-watched music competitions, Eurovision has united audiences for 70 years through dazzling performances, cultural diversity, and its enduring message: “United by Music.”

This year’s contest carries special meaning for both Austria and the Philippines. Vienna is hosting Eurovision 2026 following the historic victory of Austrian-Filipino artist JJ Pietsch with “Wasted Love” — a win that returned the contest to Austria and marked the first-ever Filipino Eurovision champion.

For one night, Filipino fans, European expatriates, tourists, and music lovers can experience the spectacle in real time alongside millions of viewers around the world.

A record 20 ambassadors gathered in Manila this week for THEPHILBIZNEWS Embassy Night – Year 5, marking the strongest diplomatic attendance in the annual advocacy event’s history and underscoring its rising profile in the international community.

Hosted by Hotel Okura Manila, the fifth Embassy Night brought together leaders from the diplomatic, business, and media industries for an evening that celebrated “the spirit of camaraderie, collective efforts, and continued progress.”

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

In his opening spiel, host and former broadcast journalist Bruce Rodriguez set the tone by acknowledging “20 of their Excellencies who have graced us with their presence for the Embassy Night – Year 5,” representing countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Among the ambassadors present were envoys from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, and Ukraine.

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

Beyond the ambassadors, representatives from a total of 30 embassies in the Philippines also attended, highlighting the event’s reach as a platform for dialogue on trade, investment, and cooperation.

Led by its Founder and Publisher, Monsi Alfonso Serrano, THEPHILBIZNEWS “has been at the forefront of delivering stories of progress in both diplomatic & business communities” and “remains the voice of diplomacy and investment in the Philippines.”

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

One of the evening’s main highlights was the presentation of the “Alab ng Likha: Parangal Sa Pambansang Sining” to renowned Filipino artist Popoy Cusi.

The citation recognized his “outstanding achievements in the international arts, including his twice-earned distinction in Who’s Who in International Art (Les Grande et Nouveaux Noms du Monde Artistique d’Aujourd’hui), Switzerland” and his “exceptional contributions to THEPHILBIZNEWS Embassy Night, creating commemorative artworks over the past three years that elevate the event with his distinctly Filipino artistry — at once quiet and evocative.”

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

The award was presented by Serrano together with Swiss Ambassador Nicolas Brühl.

As a token of appreciation, each guest received a commemorative mug designed by Cusi, “highlighting the Filipino fiesta game, palo sebo,” as THEPHILBIZNEWS marked its own “fiesta” for its 5th anniversary.

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

The program also featured the launch of the book “Lessons from the Pandemic,” written by Monsi Serrano and edited by Professor Danton Remoto. The book is “timely; it can serve as a guide to how the Philippines may face and adjust to another global crisis — this time brought by the war in the Middle East,” host Rodriguez said.

Three ambassadors took turns sharing insights on their countries’ partnerships with the Philippines and the European Union’s development agenda: Ambassador Christian Lyster of Norway, Germany’s Ambassador Dr. Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke, and EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro.

Global packaging leader ALPLA Group has officially opened its first base plant in the Philippines, marking a significant investment that underscores growing confidence in the country’s manufacturing and consumer markets.

The Austria-based firm inaugurated its state-of-the-art facility in Calamba City on March 19, positioning the site as a strategic hub for producing high-quality plastic packaging solutions for the beverage industry and other sectors.

The new plant—located within Filinvest Technology Park—features advanced machinery for the production of plastic bottles and closures, and spans 4,800 square meters covering production, administration, and logistics operations.

Company executives said the investment strengthens ALPLA’s footprint in the Asia-Pacific region, where demand for sustainable and high-quality packaging continues to rise.

“This strategically important investment in the Philippines strengthens our presence in the Asia-Pacific region. With our experience and technology, we aim to establish ourselves as a key partner for both local and international customers,” said Walter Ritzer.

The Calamba facility began operations in mid-2025 and represents ALPLA’s 200th plant globally, part of a network that has since expanded to more than 200 locations worldwide.

ALPLA manufactures high-quality plastic packaging solutions for the beverage industry and other sectors in the Philippines at its new plant in Calamba City. (Photo from ALPLA Group)

Initially equipped with four production lines, the plant utilizes a range of advanced manufacturing technologies, including injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM), extrusion blow moulding (EBM), and compression moulding (CM). These capabilities enable ALPLA to deliver fully integrated packaging solutions tailored to multinational fast-moving consumer goods firms, global beverage brands, and local manufacturers.

Ronald Tichelaar emphasized the Philippines’ strong growth potential, noting that the company aims to differentiate itself through end-to-end system solutions and globally consistent quality standards.

The facility is also designed with expansion in mind, with capacity to add up to five additional production lines as demand grows.

ALPLA currently employs around 40 workers at the Calamba site, with plans to scale operations alongside market demand. Christian Kotschy highlighted the challenges of setting up operations, including technology integration and talent acquisition, but expressed confidence in the team’s readiness for future growth.

The company first entered the Philippine market in 2014 as an in-house partner, producing preforms and bottles within the facilities of a global client. The establishment of its first standalone plant signals a strategic shift toward a broader, more flexible service offering in the country.

With rising consumption, a young population, and increasing industrial activity, the Philippines is emerging as an attractive destination for manufacturing investments—making ALPLA’s expansion a timely move to capture long-term growth opportunities.

As Austria and the Philippines approach the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, Austrian Ambassador Johann Brieger highlighted the growing economic cooperation that has become a cornerstone of the bilateral partnership. He noted that an increasing number of Austrian companies are investing in the Philippines, recognizing the country’s strategic role as a logistics and business hub in Southeast Asia. Ongoing EU-Philippines Free Trade Agreement negotiations further underscore the potential for deeper trade engagement and long-term confidence in the Philippine market.

The Austrian envoy also reflected on the broad areas of cooperation between Austria and the Philippines—including trade, culture, education, and humanitarian initiatives. As the two nations approach their milestone 80th anniversary in 2026, Amb. Brieger underscored a partnership built on mutual respect, shared values, and a steadily expanding scope of economic and cultural engagement.

“Economic collaboration is key to sustaining and expanding our nearly eight decades of partnership,” Ambassador Brieger said, emphasizing that investment ties are central to Austria’s vision for the Philippines.

While economic engagement takes center stage, the ambassador also highlighted cultural and people-to-people exchanges that continue to reinforce bilateral ties. Initiatives such as the revival of the Vienna Ball in Manila, the Eurovision 2025 victory of Filipino-Austrian artist Johannes “JJ” Pietsch, and the contributions of around 30,000 Filipinos living in Austria serve as vital bridges between the two nations.

Humanitarian cooperation remains another pillar of engagement. Austria, together with the European Union, has provided over ₱100 million in aid for communities affected by earthquakes and typhoons, while initiatives supporting Overseas Filipino Workers—including tailored Pre-Departure Seminars developed with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)—demonstrate Austria’s commitment to the welfare of Filipinos abroad.

The European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) 2025 once again opens doors for Filipino students aspiring to experience the world-class education offered by European universities.

Organized by the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines, together with the Embassies of EU Member States, EHEF 2025 highlights new academic pathways, collaborations, and opportunities for Filipinos seeking to pursue higher learning in Europe.

For the first time, Latvia, Romania, and Slovakia will join EHEF’s expanding network of participating EU Member States—offering Filipino students an even broader range of programs and academic disciplines to explore.

This year’s fair will also feature institutions from the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, and Sweden, showcasing Europe’s diverse and globally recognized educational landscape.

More than 97 European higher education institutions, embassies, and cultural organizations will take part in this year’s fair—providing direct engagement with students, educators, and researchers from across the Philippines.

New Programmes and Deepened Collaboration

EHEF 2025 introduces several new programme sessions, including presentations from the Copernicus Programme—the EU’s flagship Earth Observation initiative—and EURAXESS, which supports researcher mobility and career development.

A special session on Erasmus+ Capacity Building for Higher Education (CBHE) will highlight the EU’s ongoing commitment to innovation, collaboration, and capacity-building within the Philippine higher education system.

Focused information sessions will further connect academic and institutional groups, ensuring greater alignment and impact for participants and partner schools.

EU’s Continued Commitment to Education and Cultural Exchange

“Each year, EHEF grows not just in size but also in depth. With new EU Member States joining and new programme sessions expanding our offerings, we are opening more pathways for Filipino students and researchers to connect, learn, and thrive in the EU,” said H.E. Massimo Santoro, European Union Ambassador to the Philippines.

“This reflects the EU’s continuous dedication to making education a bridge between nations and cultures,” he added.

Throughout the fair, participating universities and EU representatives will present a wide array of degree programs, scholarships, and research opportunities designed to support Filipino students in pursuing their academic goals in Europe.

Why Study in the EU?

Studying in the European Union means more than just earning a degree—it’s about discovering the world through knowledge and culture. Students can learn new languages, immerse themselves in diverse communities, and engage with programs rooted in innovation, inclusivity, and real-world application.

EU universities empower students to explore their passions beyond traditional disciplines, nurturing future leaders with global perspectives.

Strong Support from Philippine Institutions

EHEF 2025 is supported by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and regional hub universities including:

In a dazzling celebration of Europe Day, Alliance Française de Manille opened its doors to art enthusiasts and Europhiles alike with a captivating photo exhibition titled “Memento: A Journey Through Europe.”

On May 9, the venue was transformed into an immersive visual experience, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestries and diverse histories of seven European countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Sweden.

As guests arrived for the vernissage, they were greeted by a collection of stunning photographs curated to highlight each country’s distinctive beauty—from breathtaking landscapes and architectural marvels to the people and traditions that define them. The event brought together a vibrant crowd of diplomats, art lovers, and curious minds eager to connect with Europe in all its multifaceted glory.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

The photo exhibitions were a collaboration between the embassies of these European nations, each bringing a unique perspective on their culture, heritage, and values.

Romania’s contribution was a visual love letter to its identity, as Ambassador Răduţa Dana Matache eloquently explained. The exhibition spans five key elements of Romania’s essence: spirituality, nature, highways, arts, and culture. Visitors were transported to Romania’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, like the painted churches, while the iconic Transfăgărășan highway—dubbed one of the most spectacular in the world—took center stage.

Ambassador Saija Nurminen of Finland shared how three carefully selected images showcased Finland’s unique influence in the Philippines, including the enduring legacy of Nokia phones and Armi Kuusela, the first-ever Miss Universe, who married a Filipino. Finland’s connection with the Philippines was depicted through vibrant cultural milestones, underscoring the 70-year diplomatic bond between the two nations.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

Ambassador Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin of Denmark presented images that reflected Denmark’s commitment to sustainability, well-being, and the art of “slow living.” Visitors could appreciate Denmark’s emphasis on biking as a sustainable and joyful mode of transport, while rural landscapes stood in stark contrast to the bustling urban life of Copenhagen.

The Austrian Embassy’s display was a harmonious blend of art and tradition, featuring images of the legendary Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss and vibrant theatrical performances that celebrate Austria’s rich artistic heritage. The collection offered a window into both the country’s past and its modern creative spirit.

Poland’s contribution invited viewers to explore the majestic natural beauty of the country, from the golden glow of the Golden Cave to the tranquil Kamieńczyk Waterfall—testaments to Poland’s breathtaking geology and lush landscapes.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

Swedish Ambassador Anna Pernilla Ferry brought Sweden’s captivating traditions to life, with one of the highlights being the story of the Sami people. With only about 20,000 Sami residing in Sweden, their rich cultural heritage—complete with their own language, flag, and parliament—was beautifully captured in the exhibition. Eco-tourism, folk costumes, and Midsummer traditions were among the key images that showcased Sweden’s commitment to sustainability and heritage preservation.

The Italian Embassy’s photographs served as a reminder to savor the moment, as Ambassador Davide Giglio aptly noted. Italy’s exhibition celebrated its timeless art, food, and culture, urging everyone to experience life as it happens rather than through the lens of a camera.

Open to the public from May 1 to 31, “Memento: A Journey Through Europe” offers a rare opportunity to explore the many facets of European life in one place. Don’t miss out on this breathtaking visual journey at Alliance Française de Manille, located at 209 Nicanor Garcia II, Makati City. It’s not just a photo exhibition—it’s an invitation to experience Europe through the eyes of its people, its artists, and its unique cultural heritage.

PHOTOS FROM ALLIANCE FRANCAISE DE MANILLE

For those who cherish art, culture, and the stories told through images, this exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to connect with Europe in all its splendor.

“Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy, it is democracy.” These words from journalist Walter Cronkite remind us that a free press is not optional to a democracy – it is the very foundation of an open society.

Upholding press freedom is a shared responsibility. When journalists can report the truth without fear, citizens are empowered to make informed choices, hold leaders accountable and participate meaningfully in public life.

This is why we, the Media Freedom Coalition, a network of 51 countries spanning six continents, are committed to protect and uphold media freedom both at home and abroad. This commitment becomes even more crucial in times of elections.

In 2024 and 2025, democratic transfers of power have already taken place or set to occur in over 70 countries globally. In the Philippines, there are congressional, provincial and local elections this May, followed by the first-ever elections for the Bangsamoro Parliament in October.

The right to suffrage ensures that each person is free to choose – who will best represent their ideals, aspirations and hope for their country. For elections to be truly free and democratic, voters must be able to make informed choices based on facts, not fiction or lies.

Disinformation, propaganda and hate speech threaten this process, and they are on the rise. It distorts public perception and undermines trust in institutions. A free and independent press plays a critical role in countering these threats as they are a source of reliable information and enable citizens to make an informed vote.

The explosion of social media and alternative information sources has changed how people access news. While this has allowed for a greater diversity of voices, it has also made it easier for misinformation to spread unchecked and facilitates undue influence on elections, a trend that is evident worldwide.

In this evolving landscape, the role of the press is more important and challenging than ever. Professional journalists serve as democracy’s watchdog, holding authorities accountable through fact-based reporting, uncovering injustices and providing the public with necessary information to demand transparency and change.

However, journalists can only fulfill this role if they can work freely and safely. Free from threats of being red-tagged, from legal warfare, from harassment and from threats on their lives just for doing their job. We find glimmers of hope as it was reported that, in 2024, for the first time in two decades, no Filipino journalist was killed for doing their job. Yet, accountability for past crimes against journalists remains elusive and too many journalists still experience threats and harassment – online and offline.

The fight for truth in the digital age is not the sole responsibility of journalists – it is a shared responsibility among governments, social media platforms, educators and the public.

As members of the Media Freedom Coalition, we stand in solidarity with journalists and media organizations who remain steadfast in their mission to safeguard democracy, especially in the upcoming elections. We trust that the Philippine authorities will continue to take meaningful steps to promote media freedom and protect the spaces in which journalists operate.

Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing media freedom, for it is not only important for democracy – it is democracy.

The Heads of Mission of Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in the Philippines signed the statement.

Serrano also recognized the invaluable support of Hotel Okura Manila, whose hospitality has made Embassy Night an unforgettable experience for attendees over the past three years. He went on to highlight THEPHILBIZNEWS’ major projects for 2025, including the launch of its book The Philippine Business and News: Lessons from the Pandemic, a documentary on Ukrainian schoolchildren affected by war, and the debut of its Entrepreneurs’ Night.

This year’s limited-edition mug, a treasured gift for all attendees, was designed by Master Watercolor Artist Rafael “Popoy” Cusi. The artwork, Labuyo, depicts the rare and intricate red junglefowl, symbolizing agility, power, and freedom, while advocating for wildlife conservation. Cusi’s work celebrates the beauty of Filipino life and the importance of preserving the nation’s natural heritage.
