The Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) would serve not only national interests but also the broader international community, a Palace official said Monday (New York time), positioning Manila as a potential advocate for global stability and cooperation.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the country intends to use a Security Council seat to promote peace and security beyond its own borders.

Undersecretary Claire Castro.
“Ang pagiging miyembro at mabigyan ng non-permanent seat sa UN Security Council ay hindi ibig sabihin na sariling interes lang ng Pilipinas ang ipaglalaban o madidinig na boses mula sa Pilipinas (Being a member and getting a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council doesn’t mean that the Philippines will fight only for its own interest or that voice that will be heard is only from the Philippines),” Castro said in a media briefing.

She stressed that Manila views the position as both a responsibility and an opportunity to contribute to collective security among United Nations member states.

UN headquarters.
“Tayo naman ay mayroon din sariling issue patungkol sa ating kapayapaan at seguridad, hindi maiiwasan na ito ay matalakay (We have our own issue in relation to peace and security, this discussion cannot be avoided),” she said. “Pero ang Pilipinas ay hindi lang pang sarili, kundi pang kalahatan. Dahil ito ay hindi lang pribilehiyo, ito ay responsibilidad. Hindi para sa bansa lang, kung hindi para sa lahat ng bansa, especially sa Asia (But the Philippines is not only for itself, but for all. Because this is not a privilege but a responsibility. Not only for the country, but for all countries, especially in Asia).”

The Philippines is seeking a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the 2027–2028 term, with elections scheduled for June 3, 2026 at the UN General Assembly.

As the UN’s principal body responsible for maintaining international peace and security, the Security Council oversees global peacekeeping missions, sanctions regimes, and diplomatic responses to conflicts and emerging threats.

UN Security Council Chamber.
Manila’s campaign comes as the Philippines also hosts ASEAN this year, positioning the country at the center of regional diplomacy and dialogue. Observers note that a successful bid could strengthen the Philippines’ role as a bridge between Southeast Asia and the wider international community on issues ranging from maritime security and conflict resolution to climate-related security risks.

For diplomats and business leaders monitoring geopolitical stability in the Indo-Pacific, Manila’s UNSC campaign underscores the Philippines’ intention to play a more active role in shaping global security discussions in the coming years.

Chinese New Year remains one of the most vibrant and meaningful celebrations across Asia — from Malaysia and Singapore to Hong Kong — marking a time of renewal, fresh beginnings, and the promise of prosperity.

As we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse, Feng Shui Master Joseph Chau shared his much-anticipated insights with guests at Marco Polo Ortigas Manila, offering a glimpse of what lies ahead for businesses, the economy, and even personal well-being in the year to come.

Here are the key forecasts to watch:

SCREENGRABBED FROM MARCO POLO ORTIGAS MANILA FB PAGE

Booming sectors: Computer and internet-related ventures, petroleum, electronics, solar and tech products, and entertainment are poised for a prosperous year.

Heightened competition: Expect intense rivalry across tourism, hotels, trading, logistics, and transportation.

Growth zones: Construction and real estate show promising momentum.

Proceed with caution: Banking and financial markets are advised to manage investments carefully to avoid rising bad debts or falling into financial traps.

Health watch: Pay attention to heart, kidney, urinary, and bladder conditions, as well as risks related to stroke.

Nature’s warning signs: Possible global disruptions from typhoons, flooding, fires, volcanic activity, earthquakes, water hazards, and landslides.

Economic outlook: A steady, slow phase is expected, with broader recovery projected toward 2028.

Lucky signs this year: Rabbit, Goat, Tiger, and Dog.

Here’s Master Chau’s forecast for each sign:

Horse

1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014

Horses still have excellent opportunities to pursue their goals and succeed.

This year, emotional instability may lead Horses to mood swings and misunderstandings in relationships. Tensions may rise easily, so Horses are advised to remain patient and composed. Practice forgiveness and openness to avoid potential separation or emotional distance.

SCREENGRABBED FROM MARCO POLO ORTIGAS MANILA FB PAGE

The appearance of the auspicious Commander Star clears away much of the misfortune, indicating that Horses still have excellent opportunities to pursue their goals and succeed.

It’s a favorable year for investments or buying property. Yet, a warning: “Don’t be greedy.”

Goat

1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015

Planning carefully or staying grounded is crucial.

Goats will see new opportunities for career growth, promotions, and possible salary increases. This is a favorable time to start a new business, switch careers, or even pursue a joint venture.

With a lucky star shining in their sign, Goats will enjoy strong interpersonal connections and increased romance. This is a favorable time for single Goats to meet someone special. Those in relationships should nurture love with care and avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.

Monkey

1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016

It’s a year of more work and less reward, with no significant breakthroughs in business or career. Monkeys must stay alert, remain flexible, and be prepared for sudden changes or setbacks.

Travelling or working in a new environment may help shift their luck and restore momentum. However, the presence of the Lonely Star suggests poor interpersonal relations. So maintaining good relationships and a cooperative spirit is essential for progress.

Beware of jealous individuals, rumors, and gossip.

SCREENGRABBED FROM MARCO POLO ORTIGAS MANILA FB PAGE

Monkeys may also feel physically and emotionally drained. Get a healthy checkup early on and avoid overworking — prioritize rest and recovery. Road safety is critical, and Monkeys are advised not to attend funerals or wakes throughout the year.

Rooster

1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017

Roosters should adopt the strategy of “observe carefully and act accordingly.” Flexibility and adaptability will be key. If they can remain calm and adjust to unexpected changes, they may be able to turn setbacks into success.

Finances will be unstable and unpredictable this year — some months may be favorable, while others are challenging. Roosters are strongly advised not to rely on speculative investments, as this could lead to losses or risky situations.

This is a year of variety and warmth in relationships. However, the saying goes: “Needles never sharp on both ends.” It is important to ensure having enough rest and maintaining a proper diet and hygiene to avoid illness. Special attention: respiratory system and lungs.

Dog

1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018

Dogs are in alliance with the Horse this year, which typically brings positive support. However, despite this alliance, their overall luck is mixed, with both lucky and unlucky stars in their life cycle. They must act within their limits — pushing too hard or rushing success may ruin progress.

It’s crucial to distinguish between trustworthy and deceitful people to avoid being scammed!

However, this is not a strong year for romance.

Dogs may struggle to connect with the opposite gender, and tensions or misunderstandings may arise. They must control their temper and avoid isolating themselves emotionally, which could lead to betrayal or emotional distance.

SCREENGRABBED FROM MARCO POLO ORTIGAS MANILA FB PAGE

Pig

1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

Pigs will see a rise in business income and may earn more than in the previous year. Yet, speculative or high-risk financial ventures should be avoided. The saying applies: “Too much greed leads to poverty.”

This will be a romantic and emotionally rich year for Pigs. Singles may find meaningful companionship, while couples will enjoy shared values and emotional closeness. However, patience and understanding are needed for those in relationships.

Adequate rest, sleep, and self-care are essential. Pigs should also be cautious of accidents or unexpected mishaps. Avoid risky activities and take extra care during the lunar months of June, September, and October.

Rat

1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020

Mentally, Rats must prepare to face obstacles and potential betrayal. Patience, calmness, and a clear mind are key to avoiding further complications.

With two auspicious stars, work may proceed more smoothly, and Rats may find themselves gaining authority or real power to handle tasks successfully and advance in their careers.

It’s a financially unstable year for Rats. The presence of conflicting stars could lead to easy losses or wasteful spending. They should be extra careful with budgeting and avoid overspending. It’s important to plug any financial “leaks” early on to prevent a crisis. Expanding sources of income while minimizing unnecessary expenses is essential. Avoid sharp objects and make time to rest and relax to prevent exhaustion and mental burnout.

Ox

1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021

Lucky stars will bring inspiration and creative ideas, especially in the workplace. This is a year of opportunity. If Oxen can seize the moment, they can achieve excellent results. However, it’s crucial to know when to advance and when to hold back. Avoid being overly greedy to maintain good fortune.

SCREENGRABBED FROM MARCO POLO ORTIGAS MANILA FB PAGE

Oxen will generally have stable and favorable finances this year, with steady income from multiple sources. Oxen will also be filled with romantic energy and passion this year. Single Oxen should remain alert to potential romantic opportunities, as love could blossom easily. This is a good year to consider marriage. Be mindful of diet to prevent digestive and stomach issues.

It is also advised to avoid attending funerals or wakes for the entire year.

Tiger

1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

Tigers can overcome challenges and see their efforts pay off by the end of the year. This is a great opportunity to pursue ambitions and rise in status. Tigers will be efficient and capable in their work, with progress flowing smoothly. The Promotion Star indicates chances for career advancement, recognition, or even fame.

They must maintain humility, foster good relationships, and avoid unnecessary conflicts, rumors, or attracting envy from others. Expect increased income — “more work, more gain.”

Tigers are likely to experience better romantic luck. Those in relationships should consider settling down or getting married this year. Single Tigers may meet someone special.

Also, avoid greasy or overly fried foods to lower the risk of high blood pressure, cholesterol, or heart problems

Rabbit

1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023

In 2026, Rabbits are the Romance Star for the Horse — making it a harmonious and lucky year. Things will flow smoothly, and Rabbits can expect a more cheerful atmosphere. It’s important to stay courageous, explore new opportunities, and keep pushing forward. This is a great time to set new goals and discover fresh directions in life.

Money luck is stronger than last year. With career progress looking favorable, Rabbits will find plenty of opportunities for advancement. To stay balanced, they should exercise regularly and manage stress. Avoid becoming overly emotional to maintain a peaceful mindset.

SCREENGRABBED FROM MARCO POLO ORTIGAS MANILA FB PAGE

Rabbits can expect a joyful and loving year. Romance will spark easily, especially for singles, with a strong possibility that love may blossom into something lasting. Married Rabbits will enjoy a harmonious family life.

Dragon

1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024

The Dragons’ luck sees a major improvement this year.

Progress at work will be steady, and even if obstacles arise, they can be resolved with relative ease. Money luck is also abundant this year, especially in business and career-related income. However, it may still be difficult to save or accumulate wealth, so budgeting is essential. Dragons must be calm, patient, and forgiving — especially in family life.

Be particularly cautious around water hazards, and avoid risky activities like diving or cruise travel. It’s also important to be alert to road safety, sharp objects, and vehicle accidents. Regular soft exercise and stress management will help health luck.

Snake

1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025

This will be a challenging year. The saying “bitter first, sweet later” applies perfectly.

Snakes must act cautiously, stay calm, and avoid impulsive decisions. The presence of the Wealth Star brings prosperity, but Snakes must be especially careful when signing contracts to avoid falling into traps (or potential legal trouble). All agreements should be clearly written and reviewed in detail. Overspending should be avoided, and it’s wise to set aside money for unexpected expenses.

Due to the presence of the Sickness Star, health is a concern. Snakes should pay close attention to diet and food hygiene. Relaxation and stress relief are essential. High blood pressure, heart conditions, and eye issues should be monitored closely. Health risks may be higher in the lunar months of January, April, July, and October.

The Philippines has regained its rank as the world’s second-largest banana exporter in 2025, after shipments rose to 2.925 million metric tons — a 26% increase from a year earlier, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Wednesday (Feb. 4).

Preliminary data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) show the country overtook Colombia and widened its lead over Costa Rica and Guatemala, restoring the Philippines’ global No. 2 position last held in 2020.

The rebound reverses four years of declining exports from 2021 to 2024, when pest infestations and adverse weather disrupted production and trade.

DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque said the recovery highlights both industry resilience and the results of continued government support under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr..

PHOTO FROM PNA

“Reclaiming second place globally underscores the resilience of our farmers and the strength of our trade strategy. With this, the DTI remains committed to sustaining this momentum through industry upgrading, investment promotion, and deeper integration into global value chains to strengthen the sector’s long-term competitiveness. Through our different programs, we continue to support the banana industry alongside other agricultural products to make them export-ready,” she said.

A key driver of export growth has been the Philippines’ use of major trade agreements, including the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Philippines-South Korea Free Trade Agreement. These deals have reduced or eliminated tariffs, giving Philippine bananas a price advantage in important Asian markets.

Roque said the DTI aims to replicate this success for other high-value crops such as mangoes and ube. The agency’s Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) is holding “Doing Business in Free Trade Areas” (DBFTA) seminars to guide farmers in securing Certificates of Origin needed for zero-tariff access.

The EMB has also expanded the issuance of Export-Oriented Enterprise (EOE) certifications to qualified banana exporters. These certifications allow firms to source production inputs at lower cost, helping improve quality and global competitiveness.

DTI noted that the banana industry remains a major source of rural jobs and foreign exchange. By restoring its global standing, the Philippines strengthens rural livelihoods and reinforces its reputation as a reliable agricultural exporter.

The Philippines has become the first country in Southeast Asia and the second in Asia to launch satellite-powered Direct-to-Cell (D2C) mobile connectivity, following a partnership between Globe Telecom and Starlink—a development President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hailed as a major boost to digital inclusion and disaster resilience.

The milestone was marked by the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Globe and Starlink on Friday at The Globe Tower in Taguig City, according to a Malacañang news release.

President Marcos said the initiative aligns with the administration’s goal of building a digital future that reaches even the country’s most remote and underserved communities.

“With the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between Globe and Starlink, we take a huge step forward towards a more progressive, connected, and equitable Philippines,” the President said.

“This collaboration is proof of our shared commitment to bringing connectivity to even the farthest communities in our archipelago,” he added.

Under the partnership, the Philippines rolls out Direct-to-Cell technology, which allows smartphones to connect directly to Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites without the need for additional hardware or special applications.

The service enables basic mobile functions such as messaging and data access, particularly in areas where traditional telecom infrastructure remains difficult to deploy.

“Through the launch of Direct-to-Cell or D2C service—first in Southeast Asia and second in Asia—we made satellite-powered mobile connectivity available in the Philippines,” President Marcos said.

The President underscored that digital inclusion has been a priority of his administration from the outset, framing connectivity as both a development necessity and a government responsibility.

PHOTO FROM THE PHILIPPINE NEWS AGENCY (ROBINSON NINAL)

“From the very beginning of this Administration, we have been very clear: The future of the Philippines must be and will be digital—and it must be inclusive,” he said.

“We envision a country where every child can learn without limits, where every farmer can access markets beyond their barangay, where small businesses can grow beyond their neighborhoods, and where families can stay connected no matter how far apart they may be,” he added.

President Marcos also highlighted the technology’s importance during emergencies, noting that satellite connectivity can continue operating even when land-based networks are damaged by typhoons and other natural disasters.

“Sa pamamagitan ng D2C Service, madaragdagan ang mga teknolohiyang maaaring magbigay-ginhawa sa ating pang-araw-araw na buhay,” the President said.

He reiterated the government’s push to strengthen digital infrastructure, fast-track government digitalization, expand online learning platforms, and support countryside development through better connectivity.

PHOTO FROM THEPHILIZNEWS/Mau Victa

“Ito po ang ating layunin: Mas mabilis na internet access para sa bawat Pilipino. Pantay-pantay na oportunidad. At walang sinumang Pilipino na maiiwanan o mahuhuli,” President Marcos said, noting that improved rural access can spur job creation, attract investments, and bring essential services closer to communities.

The President also acknowledged Globe’s role in shaping the country’s digital ecosystem through innovation, cybersecurity initiatives, and community empowerment, and recognized Starlink and SpaceX for bringing advanced satellite technology to the Philippines.

“What Globe and Starlink are doing today brings us closer to that goal. It shows that when the government and private sector move with purpose and shared commitment, we broaden the possibilities for a more connected Philippines,” he said.

“So, together, let us build a Bagong Pilipinas where every Filipino finds their place in this new digital world,” the President added.

The Globe-Starlink partnership combines satellite and terrestrial technologies to expand coverage in remote and disaster-prone areas, marking a key step toward more inclusive and resilient connectivity nationwide.

The Philippines has cemented its position as a key player in Asia’s luxury real estate market, ranking second in branded residences supply value with a record-breaking $4.6 billion, according to a report unveiled by C9 Hotelworks at a conference in Ascott BGC, Taguig City.

“The influx of new global branded residences is helping the Philippine real estate market appeal to overseas buyers,” said Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks, a leading consultancy in tourism and branded residences.

Asia’s branded residences sector has surged to $26.6 billion, with 68,001 units across the region. Thailand leads with a 23.3% share, followed by the Philippines (17.3%) and South Korea (11.6%). Emerging markets such as Malaysia, Vietnam, and India collectively account for 24.5% of the total market.

At the same time, Barnett said the Philippine market need to diversify amid a domestic slowdown. “Given the current domestic slump, more diversity is needed versus relying purely on the domestic and OFW markets. Learn from Thailand,” he said.

PHOTO FROM FB PAGE OF ASCOTT BGC

During the forum, a panel of industry leaders discussed the evolving appeal of branded residences beyond luxury service and amenities. Participants included: Bill Barnett, Managing Director, C9 Hotelworks; Cyndy Tan Jarabata, President & CEO, TAJARA Leisure and Hospitality Group; Saowarin Chanprakaisi, Vice President – Business Development, The Ascott Limited; Venessa Koo, Vice President – Business Development, The Ascott Limited; Gianfranco Bianchi, General Manager – Asia Pacific, The One Atelier; Lee Lin, Regional Director – Asia Pacific, NOBU Hospitality; and David Johnson, CEO, Delivering Asia Communications.

“Investors seek more than just top-tier services. Prestige, exclusivity, and long-term value play a major role,” said one panelist.

The conversation also touched on the rise of “global playground cities”—metropolitan hubs where affluent buyers invest in luxury real estate, entertainment, and high-end retail.

“Bangkok, like Miami and Dubai, is a playground city for wealthy collectors of unique real estate products. There is no reason why Manila could not also become a global playground city given its regional access, entertainment, sports, gaming, and lifestyle,” Barnett said.

Barnett also underscored the “third place” concept in retail, referring to spaces that foster community beyond home and work. “Retail forms that third place (i.e., Starbucks), where people gather for social interactions,” he said, emphasizing the role of luxury retail in sustaining in-person consumer spending despite the rise of e-commerce.

The future of branded residences in the Philippines

The Ascott Limited, a pioneer in international branded residences in the Philippines, reaffirmed its commitment to the market.

“The core of our advantage is moving beyond traditional hotel services into branded residences,” said Saowarin Chanprakaisi, Vice President for Business Development.

She highlighted the importance of adaptability and co-locating resources for scalable growth. “We are fully committed to the Philippines in the long term. The strengths of our brands—led by Somerset, Citadines, and Oakwood—will provide the confidence and services required by buyers of internationally branded residences,” she said.

Among hotel groups, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts leads in total branded residences supply with 10,941 units, followed by: The Ascott Limited, Banyan Group, Marriott International, Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts.

With its growing supply of ultra-premium branded residences and strategic positioning as a regional business and leisure hub, the Philippines is poised to attract more high-net-worth investors, reinforcing its role as a rising luxury real estate market in Asia.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is prioritizing new routes to key Asian markets, including China and the Philippines, as its Air Connectivity Program works toward welcoming over 330 million passengers on 250 international routes by 2030.

“China is a key source market where we needed to add more capacity,” said Majid Alharbi, Head of Commercial Development for the Air Connectivity Program, in an interview at the Super Terminal Expo early November.

He said increased flights and seat availability are planned for high-demand markets like China.

But already, Alharbi added, four Chinese carriers joined Saudi routes this year alone, highlighting the program’s focus on increasing accessibility for Asian tourists.

The Philippines, a long-established partner in labor exchanges with Saudi Arabia, is also benefiting from enhanced air connectivity.

Alharbi said that for Filipinos who have traditionally associated the kingdom with work opportunities, the initiative provides a fresh chance to rediscover Saudi Arabia as a tourist destination with unique natural and cultural attractions.

Under its Vision 2030 agenda, Saudi Arabia seeks to transform itself into a global tourism hub. Launched in 2021, its Air Connectivity Program has already attracted 12 new airlines and over 22 new routes this year, adding 1.5 million seats to Saudi airports.

“In three years, we’ve managed to attract more than 70 new routes and significantly increase international connectivity through our national and foreign carriers alike,” Alharbi said.

Tourism plays a pivotal role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 economic diversification strategy. The kingdom aims to increase tourism’s GDP contribution from the current 3% to 10% by 2030.

“We need to diversify our economy,” Alharbi told THEPHILBIZNEWS. “Being rich today, as a country, is good, but our resources must be sustained into different sectors, like tourism, that will support future generations.”

He said this shift underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to leveraging its geographical and cultural wealth to attract international tourists, particularly from Asia, while paving the way for sustainable economic growth.

“Everyone is welcome to visit, and we want to welcome the entire globe,” Alharbi said.

HONG KONG — Around 800 international aviation professionals from 60 airports and 100 companies on Tuesday attended the three-day Super Terminal Expo (STE) 2024 to discuss the future of Asia’s passenger and cargo terminal design, construction, and operations.

At the opening in AsiaWorld-Expo here, Vivian Cheung, Acting CEO of the Airport Authority of HK, said STE’s timing coincides with completion of the Three-Runway System (3RS) this month and the expansion of the autonomous region’s Airport City.

“Innovation is a cornerstone of our business and operations,” Cheung said, adding that the Hong Kong airport authority seeks to enhance travel experience of passengers, elevate cargo operations, and ensure sustainability by integrating smart technologies in their operations.

Cheung cited the combined use of smart phone and facial recognition, driverless vehicle, and smart screening technologies in improving speed and efficiency as well as the safety experience for passengers. She also said the airport authority’s cargo operations aim to become more paperless and transparent.

Michael Wong Wai-lun, Acting Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is adopting the 3RS to increase its passenger and cargo capacity to handle 120 million passengers and 10 million tons of cargo annually. He said these capacity increases are from 45 million passengers and 4.5 million tons of cargo.

Wang said that with this expansion expected to be finished by later this November, Hong Kong becomes a stronger aviation hub that “serve the region and beyond better” providing business and profit opportunities.

Paul Burton, managing director for Asia-Pacific of the Aviation Week Network and STE advisory board member, said the expo enables industry leaders and innovators to “come together, share insights, and collaborate on solutions that will shape the future of terminal operations.”

“As technology continues to weave intricate connections within our airports, the significance of uniting to address endless challenges and opportunities cannot be overstated,” Burton added.

Among the sessions are on hub strategies and Asia-Pacific challenges; harmonizing safety standards and airport systems; and elevating efficiency, innovations, and challenges in air cargo and terminal ground handling in Asia.

Michael Duck, EVP Commercial Development of event manager Informa Markets, said the conference will shape the airports of tomorrow. “The ideas we generate in these halls can shape the future of terminal operations and design, influence aviation policies, and improve the passenger and cargo handling experience worldwide,” he said.

Duck thus encouraged attendees to actively participate in the conference. “Dive into those interesting discussions. Seek out different perspectives. Be bold with your ideas and generous with your insights,” Duck he.

The vast exhibition space is full of activities. With the theme “Redefining Passenger and Cargo Handling Experience through Technological Innovation,” the expo also includes meetup sessions, networking luncheons, and the Super Terminal Expo Gala Dinner and Awards.

GCash, the Philippines’ leading finance super app, has earned its place as an Employer of Choice—thanks to its holistic and forward-thinking approach to human resources.

“We are intentional with the culture that we build and nurture, in view of our mission to enable Finance for All,” GCash chief people officer Robert Gonzales said in a media release.

Here’s what sets GCash apart in fostering a world-class workplace:

2. Diversity, equity, and inclusion Initiatives

Winning the HR Asia DEI award for the first time, GCash is recognized for its efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across all levels of the organization.

The company actively recruits employees from underrepresented groups and provides mandatory sensitivity training to all new hires.

The DEI x DEI program equips employees with the skills to engage inclusively, fostering an environment where every voice is heard.

3. Comprehensive Anti-Harassment Program

A cornerstone of GCash’s employee protection policies is its robust anti-harassment program, which covers issues like microaggressions and workplace harassment.

All employees undergo sensitivity and inclusion training during onboarding, which emphasizes principles of anti-harassment, ensuring everyone knows how to create and maintain a safe workplace.

This initiative, coupled with ongoing efforts to foster respect and understanding among staff, helps cultivate a positive and respectful work environment.

4. Progressive employee benefits

The company offers a progressive benefits package, including Life Partner benefits that cover health insurance, bereavement support, and wellness allowances for employees with same-sex partners.

These six factors have cemented GCash’s reputation not only a leader in the fintech industry but also as a model employer that prioritizes workplace excellence, inclusion, and employee empowerment.

“GCash has come a long way in becoming the Philippines’ first and only US$5B unicorn. It was a team effort we’ve built throughout the years,” GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon said.

“Thanks to our brilliant, creative, and hardworking employees, we have an empowered organization that enables millions of Filipinos to thrive every day, prepare for a rainy day, and plan for their one day. To pursue our mission of Finance for All, we need an empowered workplace where everyone is valued and inspired to make a difference,” Sazon added.

Asia must lead the global transition to net-zero emissions to combat climate change, said Singapore’s Ambassador for Climate Action Ravi Menon in his keynote address at “Unlocking Capital for Sustainability 2024” summit in the Lion City last week (Sept. 12).

“The battle against climate change will be won or lost in Asia. It is not enough that Europe and America—or Singapore for that matter—reach net-zero. The rest of Asia must also get there, so that the planet that we all share is safe from climate disaster,” Menon said.

The former managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore explained that this is because Asia is responsible for over half of global emissions and that its energy demand is growing rapidly, potentially leading to catastrophic climate impacts if emissions are not curtailed.

“Energy demand in Asia is growing by 2.9 percent annually, the highest of any region around the world. And Asia is expected to account for 90 percent of the world’s future growth in energy demand, driven by industrialization, urbanization, a growing middle class, and the provision of electricity to rural villages,” he said.

“If emissions in Asia are not abated, the result will be catastrophic climate change globally,” he warned.

At the same time, Menon said, South and Southeast Asia will be most vulnerable to climate change.

“By 2080, about 1 billion people in South and Southeast Asia could be affected by extreme heat. Coastal cities in South and Southeast Asia are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels and coastal flooding,” he said.

Singapore’s first climate-action ambassador presented solutions, adding that Asia should not have to choose between sustaining growth and reducing emissions.

“Asia will have to work towards decoupling economic growth from emissions. It will not be easy. It requires Asia to chart a transition pathway contextualized to its own unique challenges,” he said.

“But there can be no compromise on the eventual goal: close to net-zero emissions around the middle of the century. That timeline is set not by politics or economics, but by nature – if we want to avert the worst impacts of climate change,” he stressed.

Menon said at least 1.1 trillion US dollars annually is required for climate mitigation and adaptation in Asia, with a substantial financing gap that needs to be bridged through innovative mechanisms like blended finance and high-integrity carbon markets.

“Asia’s transition to net-zero will not be easy. But it is essential if the world is to avoid catastrophic climate change,” he said.

The Singaporean official also underscored the necessity for collaborative efforts within Asia and globally to achieve sustainable development while addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. He said these efforts include the phaseout of coal and the protection and restoration of forests, mangroves, and other natural carbon sinks.

“The world has a vested interest in Asia’s decarbonization. Singapore will do its part, in collaboration with others, to facilitate Asia’s transition to a greener and brighter future,” he said.

By Danton Remoto

(Part 2 of review of God’s Dust by Ian Buruma)

“The Old Japanese Empire” deals with Taiwan and South Korea. The author twinned the essays in one chapter because Taiwan looks up to Japan as a model, while South Korea reviles Japan for its harsh colonial conquest.

Mr. Buruma’s essay on Taiwan is also rather thin. The essay on South Korea is more instructive. He points out “the complex and sometimes explosive mixture of shame and chauvinism in South Korea. The one, of course, stokes the flames of the other. There is a Korean term for pandering to foreign powers: Sadae chuui. And Koreans are forever accusing one another of it. These accusations are not without reason, for Koreans have a long history of using outside powers to fight opponents at home…”

This peninsula divided into two countries, this country located between China and Japan, is beset by an identity crisis. It seems to have an inferiority complex masquerading as superiority. There is a constant desire among the South Koreans to prove they are better than their neighbors – whether it is in the economy, in having “the most scientific and best writing system in the world,” and, yes, in the World Cup series. It seems, Mr. Buruma suggests, that “Koreans often can only define themselves in terms of a foreign civilization.” More so if they can prove themselves better than that civilization.

Mr. Buruma’s essay on Japan, where he lived the longest, is the best in the collection. “Arriving in Japan always fills me with feelings of ambivalence. It is like coming home to a country which, to me, can never be home. I spent my twenties in Tokyo. Everything is familiar: The language, the manners, the advertisements, the TV programs. Japan is part of me, yet I can never feel part of it. This may have something to do with me. But it is also in the nature of the most insular of nations. It fills me with love and horror, which alternate and sometimes even coincide, the one sometimes, in a perverse way, feeding on the other. Japan looks the most modern society in Asia, politically, culturally, aesthetically. It is also among the most archaic. It is one of the most open societies – foreigners can go there, live there, marry, and prosper. But it remains in many ways as exclusive as Burma. Japan is ‘Westernized,’ yet somehow, the country in East Asia least touched by the West. I am never sorry to leave, yet I always yearn to go back.”

Shrewdly Mr. Buruma points out what ails modern Japanese – the feeling that something has been irrevocably lost in Japan’s dizzying rise to progress and modernity. What has been lost is replaced by an uncritical acceptance of many things from the West. Urban Japan has become like a pastiche of many influences – a modern yet tacky Disneyland, if you will.

“But it is not so much the modern vulgarization of traditional forms that is disturbing, but the idea of tradition as just another transient fashion, another form without substance. One sometimes wonders whether anything in modern Japan has lasting value, whether anything substantial can visibly last. There is a rootlessness, a constant evanescence about Japanese sophistication which explains, perhaps, both the melancholy Japanese love for fleeting beauty, for visible decay, and the anxiety about cultural and spiritual loss.”

What has been lost is the Japanese spirit, the national soul – however you define it. Nihonjinron, or defining Japaneseness, is a constant topic of best-selling books and top-rated TV shows. Sometimes, the form it takes veers dangerously close to ultra-nationalism. And here, Mr. Buruma engages in the history of Western ideas in a learned and admirable manner, comparing prewar emperor worship in Japan to “a kind of Bonapartism grafted onto Japanese traditions.”

If there is one flaw here, it is the hasty generalization that “Japanese intellectuals often seem marginal figures, writing for one another, respected as men of learning, but not taken seriously by the world at large.” Of course, in any society – I am sure even in London, where Mr. Buruma now resides – intellectuals are marginal figures. The same intellectuals write for The London Review of Books that the same coterie of intellectuals reads. He also failed to note that there are now public intellectuals – people in academe who write for newspapers and magazines and who appear even on TV talk shows, giving depth and illumination even if they are only allowed so many column inches or so many seconds for their sound-bites. And I am sure Mr. Buruma has read the novels of Harumi Murakami, one of Japan’s best writers – and intellectuals – who dissects Japanese society with a pen as sharp as a scalpel, and as focused as a laser beam.

Perhaps I am just a Filipino who is a student of his country’s history, but I found Mr. Buruma’s essay on the Philippines similar to a golf course – full of holes. In the first sentence alone, he calls Olongapo City a “typical Filipino town.” How could a town of 250,000, which hosted an American base, be called typical? Then and now, the typical Filipino town is a small, agricultural place where life revolves around the town square bordered by the church, the marketplace, the municipal hall, and the houses of the few elite.

Then Mr. Buruma also calls Ferdinand Blumentritt, the Filipino national hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s friend, “an obscure Austrian schoolmaster.” Blumentritt was a professor, yes, but he was also a doctor and a scientist renowned in Europe during his time. Then Mr. Buruma adds that Rizal had Japanese blood (not true), had lived much of his life abroad (not true), and called the Propaganda movement Rizal’s movement (not true, it was started by the lawyer and journalist Marcelo H. del Pilar).

Moreover, Mr. Buruma adds that many Filipinos like to claim that Rizal and his fellow ilustrados (the Enlightened ones, the leaders) in the Propaganda movement “were the first modern nationalists in Asia…” Filipinos never claimed that; perhaps Mr. Buruma’s informants did. But what many Filipinos claim is that the Philippines became the first independent republic in Asia in 1898 – a claim that is based on historical fact. Mr. Buruma also says that the Rizal millenarian cult is based in Mount Makiling when, in fact, it is based in the bigger Mount Banahaw. Mount Makiling is the small mountain that can be seen from the azotea (porch) of Rizal’s ancestral house in Calamba, Laguna, south of Metro Manila.

There are more. Mr. Buruma claims that “the typical hero [in Filipino movies] is a simple man who gets abused and humiliated, often sexually, all through the film.” I have been watching Filipino films for the past 33 years and I have yet to come across a Filipino film with this plotline. Then he said that “one Canadian Zen master set up a successful business in Manila by convincing Filipinos that they, as a people, are especially gifted for spiritual quests….” Filipinos need no reminders about these. The country is full of faith healers and espiritistas (spiritual mediums), from Luzon to Mindanao.

Moreover, Mr. Buruma claims that “Filipinos have no collective memory, no recorded history that precedes Spanish conquest….” The point is that history – or literature or other forms of culture – is not always recorded in print. Philippine literature, like the pre-colonial literature of its Southeast Asian neighbors, was mostly oral and handed down the generations by the centuries-old tradition of storytelling. The Philippines has a wealth of epics that are as larger-than-life as any Western one, and a trove of poems, riddles, and proverbs that have the lyricism and pith of the haiku.

Although Mr. Buruma is a fine and accessible guide to modern Asia, what we need at this point in our cultural history are writers who come from the continent itself. Steeped in the history of Asia and nurtured by its cultures, I hope that they will write the books that will give authentic voices to the complex and colorful continent we live in. A few of them have already done that. The real journey, then, has just begun.

Danton Remoto’s books include “Riverrun: A Novel” and “The Heart of Summer: Stories and Tales,” both published by Penguin Southeast Asia. He has also translated three Tagalog novels for the Penguin Southeast Asian classics series. All the books are available at www.acrephils.com and in Kinokuniya Asia.
