Remote and hybrid work have untethered many people from the need to be in an office every day, driving the biggest change to travel since the advent of commercial flying. For the first time, millions of people can now live anywhere.

On Airbnb’s platform, we have seen:

One out of every five gross nights booked in Q3 were for stays of 28 days or longer.

Nearly half of nights booked in Q3 were for stays of at least seven days, up from 44 percent in 2019.

In the 12 months through September, more than 100,000 guests booked stays of 90 days or longer.

More than 300,000 people applied for 12 openings to live anywhere on Airbnb for a year and are providing insights to help inform our product development and upgrades.

Today, Airbnb CEO and Co-Founder Brian Chesky announced that he too will live on Airbnb. Starting this week in Atlanta, Chesky will stay in people’s homes in new towns or cities every few weeks, and return to San Francisco in the same way that many remote workers are returning regularly to the cities where they work in order to collaborate with colleagues. Chesky living on Airbnb will help to improve the design of the experience for people who can now live anywhere.

This Live Anywhere trend is like a decentralization of living, and it’s changing the identity of travel. Among the trends Airbnb expects to see are:

1. People will continue to spread out to thousands of towns and cities, and they will stay for weeks, months, or even longer.

100,000 towns and cities around the world have had an Airbnb booking during the pandemic.

6,000 places had their first-ever Airbnb booking.

On New Year’s Eve, nearly 4.5 million guests stayed on Airbnb in more than 53,000 places around the world with over 40 percent of nights booked were more than 1,000 miles away from guests’ origins.

In Q3 2021, over 85 percent of long-term stay nights booked in the Philippines were for stays in urban destinations. Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Baguio emerged as the top most searched destinations for long-term stays.

2. More people will start living abroad, others will travel for the entire summer, and some will even give up their leases and become digital nomads.

People want to explore new countries: Before the pandemic, international arrivals exploded from 25 million in 1950 to more than 1.4 billion in 2019, according to UNWTO.

On Airbnb, family long-term stay nights grew 75% from summer 2019 to summer 2021.

The share of Airbnb long-term stay bookers who used their stays to lead a nomadic lifestyle grew from 2020 to 2021—from 9% to 12%.[1]

In the Philippines, 45% of Filipinos polled want to rent out their homes and travel.

3. Cities and countries will compete to attract these remote workers, and it will lead to a redistribution of where people travel and live.

More countries are changing their visa and tax rules, and more than three dozen countries currently offer some sort of digital nomad visa scheme.

Airbnb is already helping a range of urban and rural destinations in the United States let remote workers try living there, from Chicago to West Virginia and Northern Maine.

There’s no denying that the pandemic has really brought us down to our knees literally and figuratively.

Literally, because many have knelt down in prayer, now more spiritually mindful of what will happen to them after this life. Figuratively, the weight of this pandemic has brought us to our knees, losing jobs, closing business, or worse, losing a loved one.

Based on the report from the Department of Trade and Industry, more than 50 percent of the MSMEs have closed down. There’s been zero revenue in the tourism industry since April 2019.

After one and a half year since the pandemic hit our country, and the gradual opening of the economy is taking place, there is a good news worth sharing amidst the challenging situation. The Airbnb recently shared the 2021 Release which showed that travelers are booking unique abodes including cabins, tiny homes, and treehouses to break up the monotony of the past year spent in lockdown. Nearly 70 percent of respondents to a recent Airbnb survey indicated they want to be able to filter for unique stays when searching for trip accommodation.

According to the latest Airbnb data, searches for unique stays have increased by 94 percent in 2021 compared to the same time period in 2019, and 55 percent of Airbnb’s 100 most wish-listed homes in the last year fall into unique categories.* Notably, searches for certain types of unique homes have exploded by over 10x compared to just two years ago. Searches for yurts have spiked by approximately 1700%, while searches for earth houses and barns have increased 1,285% and 1,068% respectively.

In the Philippines, Hosts have earned over P24 million welcoming guests into their unique homes since the start of the pandemic. “Many of our unique stays in the Philippines are tucked away in the outskirts of large cities, within driving distance from the metro,” shared Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s General Manager for Southeast Asia, India, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. “Uncovering these one-of-a-kind stays is now a whole lot easier with our new Flexible Destinations feature, which helps guests discover incredible properties in places they may not have thought to search for. Guests can simply enter the dates they want to travel or search with flexible dates, for instance, a weekend, week or an entire month, to search and book their unique stays.”

One of Airbnb’s most popular unique stays is the Domescape glamping dome house in Nasugbu, Batangas. The Domescape is the first of its kind in the Philippines — an intricately designed geodesic dome perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Located in Barangay Tumalim, a quiet neighborhood adjacent to a large river, the Domescape is tastefully styled with modern wood furniture and plush white beddings. It also comes complete with luxury amenities that allow guests to immerse in nature in full comfort, including an air conditioner, mini-fridge, kettle, microwave oven, and humidifier. Guests can spend the night stargazing from inside the dome, as well as enjoy private access to a natural swimming pool!

The dome is equipped with all the essentials you need for an ideal nature getaway

“Domescape was born out of our love for adventure and family,” shares Host Triccia Serafica. “It was on a family road trip in 2018 when we thought of having a second home tucked away somewhere remote, and away from our place in the city. We wanted to combine the rejuvenating experience you feel when you’re close to nature with the luxury you get when you stay in upscale accommodation.”

After the completion of the Domescape that same year, Triccia and her family began to invite friends over to stay. The following year, they began hosting on Airbnb and found great joy in sharing their second home with travelers who want to immerse in the great outdoors while spending quality time with their loved ones.

“With Domescape, we have witnessed several beautiful celebrations with our guests,” added Tricia. “Whether a marriage proposal, surprise birthday celebrations, and even pre-wedding photoshoots – we always look forward to these celebrations and are beyond happy to be a part of the moment. Hosting has allowed us to meet people from all walks of life – we’ve even hosted celebrities for their pre-wedding shoot, not to mention numerous shoots for magazines and music videos!”
