Hosted by Hotel Okura Manila, the fifth Embassy Night brought together leaders from the diplomatic, business, and media industries for an evening that celebrated “the spirit of camaraderie, collective efforts, and continued progress.”

In his opening spiel, host and former broadcast journalist Bruce Rodriguez set the tone by acknowledging “22 of their Excellencies who have graced us with their presence for the Embassy Night – Year 5,” representing countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Among the ambassadors present were envoys from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, and Ukraine.

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

Beyond the ambassadors, representatives from a total of 25 embassies in the Philippines also attended, highlighting the event’s reach as a platform for dialogue on trade, investment, and cooperation.

Led by its Founder and Publisher, Monsi Alfonso Serrano, THEPHILBIZNEWS “has been at the forefront of delivering stories of progress in both diplomatic & business communities” and “remains the voice of diplomacy and investment in the Philippines.”

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

One of the evening’s main highlights was the presentation of the “Alab ng Likha: Parangal Sa Pambansang Sining” to renowned Filipino artist Popoy Cusi.

The citation recognized his “outstanding achievements in the international arts, including his twice-earned distinction in Who’s Who in International Art (Les Grande et Nouveaux Noms du Monde Artistique d’Aujourd’hui), Switzerland” and his “exceptional contributions to THEPHILBIZNEWS Embassy Night, creating commemorative artworks over the past three years that elevate the event with his distinctly Filipino artistry — at once quiet and evocative.”

The award was presented by Serrano together with Swiss Ambassador Nicolas Brühl.

As a token of appreciation, each guest received a commemorative mug designed by Cusi, “highlighting the Filipino fiesta game, palo sebo,” as THEPHILBIZNEWS marked its own “fiesta” for its 5th anniversary.

The program also featured the launch of the book “Lessons from the Pandemic,” written by Monsi Serrano and edited by Professor Danton Remoto. The book is “timely; it can serve as a guide to how the Philippines may face and adjust to another global crisis — this time brought by the war in the Middle East,” host Rodriguez said.

Three ambassadors took turns sharing insights on their countries’ partnerships with the Philippines and the European Union’s development agenda: Ambassador Christian Lyster of Norway, Germany’s Ambassador Dr. Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke, and EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro.

The New Manila International Airport (NMIA) project in Bulacan was recently presented at the 12th OECD Workshop for Financial Institutions in Paris as a case study in aligning major infrastructure developments with international environmental and social standards.

San Miguel Aerocity Inc. (SMAI), the project proponent, was invited to present NMIA before export credit agencies, commercial and development banks, development finance institutions, and environmental and social advisory firms from across the OECD’s 38 member countries.

The project was featured as a plenary case study, highlighting its alignment with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and the Equator Principles—frameworks widely used by global lenders in evaluating large-scale infrastructure projects. SMAI presented alongside Atradius Dutch State Business (DSB), the project’s export credit insurer, and Earth Active, one of its independent environmental and social consultants.

SMAI said the presentation underscored NMIA’s transition from local regulatory compliance to internationally aligned environmental and social frameworks. This includes strengthened internal management systems and the implementation of biodiversity protection and social risk mitigation measures for the project’s complex coastal site, which includes critical habitats.

Participants viewed NMIA as a credible and transparent example of infrastructure development under challenging environmental and social conditions. They also cited the company’s openness in addressing early-stage challenges, its capacity-building efforts, and its adaptive management approach—particularly in biodiversity offsets and social performance.

The project was also discussed as a practical reference for lender decision-making in emerging markets, demonstrating how collaboration between project sponsors and financiers can address gaps and enhance environmental and social performance over time.

“The NMIA project is a clear example of how cooperation among financial institutions and consultants can support developers in achieving compliance with international standards. We carefully evaluated the project and decided to support it. The results show that the effort was worthwhile,” said Marije Hensen of Atradius Dutch State Business, the Dutch export credit agency.

SMAI added that flooding risks, land stability, and environmental safeguards have been central considerations in NMIA’s technical and environmental reviews from the outset. These continue to be addressed through ongoing assessment, mitigation planning, and oversight under both Philippine regulations and international lender standards.

Founded in 1961, the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has played a key role in shaping global policies on corporate governance, sustainability, and responsible business conduct, with many of its frameworks adopted beyond member countries.

SMAI said its participation in the workshop reflects its continued engagement with the international project finance and environmental and social community, reinforcing its position as a Philippine infrastructure developer capable of operating within OECD, export credit agency, and global lender governance frameworks.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) early this week warned of delays in the release of new Philippine passports, citing ongoing logistical and supply chain disruptions linked to the Middle East crisis.

In an advisory dated April 8, the DFA said applicants who filed beginning the last week of March may experience longer waiting times, with processing now expected to take 10 to 15 working days until further notice.

“Due to logistical and supply chain issues caused by the Middle East crisis, passport applications filed beginning the last week of March 2026 may experience delays in release,” the DFA said.

The agency assured the public that it is coordinating closely with its third-party service provider responsible for ePassport printing to address the issue and restore normal processing timelines.

The development highlights the widening impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have begun to strain global supply chains and affect government services beyond energy and trade.

The DFA advised applicants with urgent travel needs to reach out to its Office of Consular Affairs or relevant consular offices for assistance. It also provided dedicated hotlines and email channels for passport and consular concerns as it works to manage the backlog.

Applicants who need emergency or urgent consular services may contact DFA OCA Aseana:

MG Motor Philippines is sharpening its position in the compact sedan segment with the launch of the new MG5 Prestige, a value-driven model that combines modern styling, smart tech, and everyday usability for Filipino motorists.

Positioned as an upgrade to one of the brand’s most accessible sedans, the MG5 Prestige leans into practicality without sacrificing comfort. Its larger proportions—stretching over 4.6 meters long with a 2,680 mm wheelbase—translate into improved cabin space, making it suitable for both daily commutes and longer road trips.

Inside, the five-seater sedan emphasizes connectivity and passenger comfort. A 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto anchors the dashboard, while rear air-conditioning vents and USB ports ensure convenience for passengers—features that are becoming essential for urban and intercity travel alike.

On the exterior, the MG5 Prestige carries a more refined look, highlighted by projector LED headlights, daytime running lights, and 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels. A power sunroof adds a premium touch rarely seen in this price bracket.

Under the hood, the sedan is powered by a 1.5-liter DVVT gasoline engine paired with a CVT, delivering 110 PS and 142 Nm of torque. Built to meet Euro VI emission standards, the powertrain offers a balance of efficiency and performance suited for city driving and highway cruising.

Practical features such as a reverse camera with dynamic guidelines, cruise control, and tire pressure monitoring system further enhance safety and ease of use—key considerations for everyday drivers navigating congested urban roads.

With a 512-liter trunk capacity, the MG5 Prestige also stands out for its cargo space, reinforcing its appeal as a versatile option for families and professionals alike.

Priced at ₱888,888, the model underscores MG’s strategy of offering feature-rich vehicles at competitive price points. Introductory offers include ₱20,000 cash savings, low downpayment options starting at ₱70,000, and one free preventive maintenance service for a limited time.

Available in Diamond Red, Phantom Black, Cosmic Silver, and Dover White, the MG5 Prestige is now on display at MG dealerships nationwide or or learn more at www.mgmotor.com.ph.

In a world unsettled by conflict — from the war in the Middle East to broader global anxieties, travel is no longer just an escape. For many, it has become a way to pause, reflect, and regain a sense of balance.

This is where mindfulness comes in as a quiet, deliberate way of moving through uncertain times.

Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR) is leaning into this shift, embracing what it calls “mindful hospitality,” an approach that goes beyond comfort and convenience to focus on purpose, intention, and care.

At its core, the idea is simple: Every action, no matter how small, matters.

MHR Leaders discussed how to practice mindfulness in respective departments. PHOTO FROM MHR

For MHR, mindfulness is not confined to a single program. It flows through every part of the guest experience — from streamlined service operations and thoughtfully designed menus, to intentional communication and responsible investments.

Even behind the scenes, teams are encouraged to make decisions guided by awareness and care.

“Mindful travel is a cause Megaworld Hotels & Resorts wants to rally for in the industry. It is not a campaign; we want to start a movement whereby everyone is conscious of what we do when we travel,” Cleofe Albiso, Managing Director of Megaworld Hotels & Resorts, said.

It’s a philosophy that feels especially relevant today, when so much feels beyond control. Mindfulness, in this sense, offers something grounding: the ability to focus on what can still be shaped — our choices, our habits, our impact.

“Mindful travel can be as simple as reusing your linens and towels during your stay or turning off the lights and aircon when you step out the room knowing that these small yet deliberate actions can make a huge difference,” she said.

MHR associates sign their names expressing their commitment to mindful travel. PHOTO FROM MHR

These small choices, repeated over time, become a form of quiet resistance against waste and excess. They also offer travelers a sense of participation, of being part of something larger than themselves.

The idea extends beyond the room. Guests are encouraged to bring reusable bottles, opt for plant-based meals, and support local communities. These are not grand gestures, but they carry weight precisely because they are doable.

Recently, this mindset took center stage at the MeGreen Mindful Travel Forum, where over 200 leaders from MHR’s properties gathered to align on a shared vision. The message was clear: Meaningful change does not always come from sweeping actions, but from consistent, intentional ones.

That philosophy resonates deeply in today’s climate. As headlines grow heavier and uncertainties linger, there is a quiet power in choosing to act with purpose — even in the smallest ways.

The forum’s keynote speaker, Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, known for pioneering Earth Hour in the Philippines, reinforced this urgency, reminding participants that mindfulness must translate into real environmental responsibility.

Associates of Megaworld Hotels & Resorts pledged to practice mindful travel at the group’s MeGreen Mindful Travel Forum held last March 25, 2026. PHOTO FROM MHR

In practice, this has led to initiatives such as energy-efficient food preparation, sustainability-driven room packages, and partnerships with communities — from the Ati Komunidad in Boracay to coral reef restoration efforts in Cebu.

Through its “Mindful Stays” offering, guests are invited to rest while also contributing to these initiatives. A portion of each booking supports programs focused on heritage preservation, education, environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods.

It is, in many ways, a redefinition of travel — not as consumption, but as connection.

And perhaps that is what mindfulness ultimately offers in uncertain times: not an escape from reality, but a way of engaging with it more consciously.

Investment momentum is building in northeastern Luzon as the Casiguran Airport within the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) advances toward becoming a future international gateway.

As one of APECO’s flagship infrastructure projects, the airport is expected to play a central role in transforming Aurora Province into a strategic hub for tourism, logistics, and emerging industries.

APECO President and CEO Atty. Gil G. Taway IV said the agency is set to bid out key components of the project, including the passenger terminal building and air traffic control tower, within the second quarter of the year—marking a critical step toward operational readiness.

Positioning Casiguran Airport as an international gateway is seen to enhance direct access to global markets, improve regional connectivity, and strengthen Aurora’s appeal to both domestic and foreign investors.

The project has also garnered strong institutional backing. Aurora Lone District Representative Rep. Rommel Rico T. Angara, in a message during the APECO–InfiniVAN Memorandum of Understanding signing on March 27, expressed optimism that commercial flights could begin operating in and out of Aurora by June 2027.

He added that while Baler currently hosts a domestic airport, the long-term vision for Casiguran is to establish a fully operational international gateway within the APECO zone, with a target timeline of 2028.

With infrastructure development gaining momentum, APECO continues to lay the groundwork for a more connected and investment-ready Aurora—anchored on its vision of becoming a globally competitive and sustainable economic zone.

Passenger traffic is surging at Ninoy Aquino International Airport as the Holy Week travel rush kicks off, with volumes expected to exceed 1.35 million over the peak travel window.

In a statement, New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) projected total passenger volume at 1,353,265 from March 28 to April 5, slightly higher than the 1,326,730 recorded during the same Semana Santa period in 2025.

While demand remains robust, NNIC noted that growth fell short of earlier projections due to flight suspensions and operational restrictions affecting several Middle East services.

To manage the seasonal influx, the airport operator has intensified operational readiness across terminals. These include the deployment of additional personnel at check-in, immigration, and security screening areas; enhanced coordination with airlines and ground handlers; extended passenger assistance hours; and real-time monitoring of terminal congestion.

The measures are being implemented in coordination with key government agencies, including the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Bureau of Immigration (BI), Bureau of Customs (BOC), and Office for Transportation Security (OTS), alongside other aviation stakeholders.

NNIC identified April 5 as the busiest day of the travel window, with an estimated 158,884 passengers, followed closely by March 28 with 157,804 travelers. Daily passenger volume is expected to remain above 143,000 throughout the period.

Among terminals, Terminal 3 is projected to handle the bulk of passenger traffic at 712,932, followed by Terminal 2 with 346,342, and Terminal 1 with 293,990.

Since assuming operations in September 2024, NNIC has implemented a series of upgrades aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency. These include enhancements in terminal facilities, traffic and queue management systems, and improved coordination across airside and landside operations.

As the annual Holy Week travel surge unfolds, NNIC advises passengers to check flight advisories, allow extra travel time, and arrive early at the airport. International travelers are likewise reminded to complete their eTravel registration prior to departure to ensure smoother processing.
