Hosted by Hotel Okura Manila, the fifth Embassy Night brought together leaders from the diplomatic, business, and media industries for an evening that celebrated “the spirit of camaraderie, collective efforts, and continued progress.”

In his opening spiel, host and former broadcast journalist Bruce Rodriguez set the tone by acknowledging “20 of their Excellencies who have graced us with their presence for the Embassy Night – Year 5,” representing countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Among the ambassadors present were envoys from Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, and Ukraine.

PHOTO FROM THEPHILBIZNEWS

Beyond the ambassadors, representatives from a total of 25 embassies in the Philippines also attended, highlighting the event’s reach as a platform for dialogue on trade, investment, and cooperation.

Led by its Founder and Publisher, Monsi Alfonso Serrano, THEPHILBIZNEWS “has been at the forefront of delivering stories of progress in both diplomatic & business communities” and “remains the voice of diplomacy and investment in the Philippines.”

One of the evening’s main highlights was the presentation of the “Alab ng Likha: Parangal Sa Pambansang Sining” to renowned Filipino artist Popoy Cusi.

The citation recognized his “outstanding achievements in the international arts, including his twice-earned distinction in Who’s Who in International Art (Les Grande et Nouveaux Noms du Monde Artistique d’Aujourd’hui), Switzerland” and his “exceptional contributions to THEPHILBIZNEWS Embassy Night, creating commemorative artworks over the past three years that elevate the event with his distinctly Filipino artistry — at once quiet and evocative.”

The award was presented by Serrano together with Swiss Ambassador Nicolas Brühl.

As a token of appreciation, each guest received a commemorative mug designed by Cusi, “highlighting the Filipino fiesta game, palo sebo,” as THEPHILBIZNEWS marked its own “fiesta” for its 5th anniversary.

The program also featured the launch of the book “Lessons from the Pandemic,” written by Monsi Serrano and edited by Professor Danton Remoto. The book is “timely; it can serve as a guide to how the Philippines may face and adjust to another global crisis — this time brought by the war in the Middle East,” host Rodriguez said.

Three ambassadors took turns sharing insights on their countries’ partnerships with the Philippines and the European Union’s development agenda: Ambassador Christian Lyster of Norway, Germany’s Ambassador Dr. Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke, and EU Ambassador Massimo Santoro.

A deal consolidating the electricity requirements of 60 Starbucks stores that is equivalent to more than three megawatts (MW) has been formalized between MPower and Rustan Coffee Corporation (RCOC), Meralco said in a news release.

The agreement, which marks a major step in the coffee chain’s shift toward cost-efficient and sustainable energy use, places the selected Starbucks branches under the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP).

RAP allows for multiple facilities to combine their power demand and access more competitive electricity rates under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) framework.

MPower, the retail electricity supplier of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco), will provide the energy supply for the consolidated load, enabling operational efficiencies across the participating stores in Metro Manila.

The enrollment, which began in November 2025, is expected to support Starbucks Philippines’ efforts to optimize costs while advancing its sustainability agenda.

PHOTO FROM MERALCO

“In today’s evolving business environment, it is important for companies like ours to continue exploring ways to operate more efficiently. Since transitioning, we have begun to see initial savings in our electricity costs,” RCOC President Noey Lopez said during the ceremonial signing of the agreement with MPower.

The initiative complements existing in-store sustainability measures such as water-saving fixtures, 100% LED lighting, energy-efficient air-conditioning systems, and improved waste management practices.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of MPower Redel Domingo said the move highlights how businesses can benefit from participating in the competitive retail electricity market.

“By pioneering RAP within the food and beverage sector, it demonstrates how businesses with multiple facilities can access the benefits of the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) framework,” Domingo said.

MPower said it will continue to promote customer choice by offering cost-competitive electricity and flexible energy solutions, particularly for companies seeking to improve efficiency across multiple locations.

Grab Philippines has launched the Eco-Drive Initiative, bringing together major banks and global automakers to accelerate electric and hybrid vehicle adoption among TNVS drivers.

Billed as Southeast Asia’s largest EV financing coalition for ride-hailing, the program addresses two key pressures on drivers: rising fuel costs and the need to replace aging vehicles.

Through partnerships with BDO and BPI, drivers gain access to preferential “green” auto loans, simplified applications, and flexible repayment options. Automotive partners—including Toyota, BYD, GAC, Dongfeng, and others—are offering exclusive discounts on EV and hybrid models.

Eco-Drive also introduces a data-driven approach to financing, allowing banks to consider driver earnings, tenure, and ratings—helping bridge long-standing credit access gaps in the gig economy.

To better match driver cash flow, Grab enables daily loan repayments via the Grab Driver Wallet, offering an alternative to traditional monthly amortization.

By integrating financing, vehicle access, and repayment into one platform, Eco-Drive creates a scalable pathway for fleet electrification in the Philippines.

Advocacy

Eco-Drive Aligns Private Sector with PH EV Push Under EVIDA

Eco-Drive supports the Philippines’ transport electrification goals under the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), advancing efforts to reduce fuel dependence and transport emissions.

By targeting TNVS drivers, the initiative taps a high-impact segment for EV adoption while increasing public exposure to electric mobility through everyday rides.

The coalition model—linking financing, vehicle supply, and platform data—addresses key adoption barriers and enables scale. Its use of alternative data for credit assessment also expands financial inclusion for drivers traditionally underserved by banks.

Grab said it will continue working with agencies such as the LTFRB, DOTr, and DOE to align the program with national transport modernization efforts.

The Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) has stepped up efforts to strengthen the country’s medical laboratory system, convening accredited laboratories for a capacity-building orientation on international standards aimed at improving the reliability of diagnostic services.

Held virtually on March 5 to 6, the two half-day sessions focused on ISO 15189:2022, a globally recognized benchmark for quality and competence in medical laboratories. The activity gathered representatives from PAB-accredited Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) across the Philippines.

The orientation sought to deepen laboratories’ understanding of accreditation requirements and help align their operations with updated international standards — seen as critical to ensuring accurate test results, effective treatment, and stronger public health protection.

At the opening of the program, Jenebert P. Opinion of PAB outlined the bureau’s mandate and services, emphasizing the role of accreditation in ensuring laboratory reliability, safeguarding patient safety, and maintaining confidence in healthcare systems.

Serving as resource speaker, Marienella P. Galit of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine shared technical guidance on the structure and implementation of ISO 15189, drawing from her experience in laboratory quality management and assessments.

Participants engaged in discussions on practical laboratory applications, as well as the challenges and opportunities in complying with evolving global requirements.

PAB said the initiative forms part of its broader push to enhance the competence of laboratories and reinforce accreditation as a cornerstone of quality assurance in the country’s healthcare system.

As the Philippines’ national accreditation body under the Department of Trade and Industry, PAB evaluates and accredits organizations that test, inspect, and certify products and services. Its work ensures that laboratory results and certifications are technically sound, impartial, and widely accepted both locally and abroad.

By aligning with international frameworks such as ISO/IEC 17011, PAB helps boost trust in Philippine-issued test results — an advantage for both public health and export competitiveness.

Officials noted that strengthening laboratory standards has real-world impact, from more reliable medical diagnoses to increased global acceptance of Philippine products, reducing the need for duplicate testing.

The orientation also served as a platform to strengthen collaboration among accredited institutions, with PAB reaffirming its commitment to continuous learning, knowledge exchange, and improving the country’s quality infrastructure.

Through sustained training and engagement, the bureau aims to help laboratories achieve operational excellence and deliver safer, more dependable services to the public.

By Dr. BJ Enverga

In June 1859, thousands of wounded soldiers lay abandoned on a battlefield in northern Italy. There were not enough doctors, not enough supplies, and no organized system to care for them. When a Swiss businessman named Henry Dunant arrived, the fighting was already over. But its aftermath remained.

Dunant described it as one of “the most dreadful sights imaginable”, filled with “agony” and “suffering”. Some of the wounded cried out, “They desert us, leave us to die miserably,” as they waited for aid that never came. He began helping where he could, organizing local villagers to tend to the wounded, regardless of which side they had fought for.

In the days that followed, he was struck by a troubling realization. There were no agreed rules, no shared system, and no international effort to care for victims of war.

Dunant returned to Switzerland and wrote a short book, A Memory of Solferino, describing what he had seen. He ended it with a simple proposal. What if countries agreed to create neutral organizations to care for the wounded in times of war? What if they established rules that all sides would follow?

The idea was radical. It required countries to cooperate even in the midst of conflict. And it caught on.

In 1863, Dunant’s proposal led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross. A year later, his work also contributed to the first Geneva Convention, an international agreement establishing rules for the humane treatment of wounded soldiers.

War did not disappear. Atrocities did not end. However, the agreement defined what should and should not be done, even on the battlefield. It showed that even in conflict, cooperation was possible.

Over time, similar efforts would emerge in other areas. A Polish-Jewish lawyer named Rafael Lemkin would later campaign for international recognition of genocide as a crime, helping to establish legal norms against it. After the sinking of the Titanic, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea introduced new standards for maritime safety, including continuous radio monitoring and ships having adequate numbers of lifeboats. In the early 2000s, the rapid spread of SARS was contained in part through unprecedented cooperation coordinated by the World Health Organization, as countries shared data, expertise, and resources in real time.

These efforts did not eliminate risk, tragedy, or conflict. But they reduced harm. They created systems that made the world more predictable, more stable, and, in many cases, more humane.

They remind us that the world does not function by chance alone. It is held together by agreements, both formal and informal, that allow countries to coordinate their actions and manage shared problems.

At a time when many societies seem to be turning inward and global cooperation appears fragile, it is worth remembering how much of our daily lives depends on these systems. The price of fuel, for instance, is not determined solely by local supply and demand. It is shaped by international agreements, trade routes, and the stability of key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz. When cooperation breaks down, the effects are felt far beyond the sites of conflict, reaching into everyday life.

These systems exist because countries have learned to work together, even when doing so is difficult.

One lesson we can take from Henry Dunant is not only that suffering could be alleviated, but it requires cooperation across borders. His idea was simple. Even in a divided world, there could be shared rules and shared responsibilities.

That is what made his vision so powerful, and it remains just as relevant today.

The systems we rely on, whether in times of war, disaster, or disease, did not emerge naturally. They were built, often in response to moments of crisis, by people who believed that cooperation was possible. They endure only so long as that belief is sustained.

In a world that is becoming more fragmented, those systems cannot be taken for granted. They must be sustained, strengthened, and, when necessary, defended.

Because even in moments of division, it is cooperation that allows us to respond to global pandemics, keep vital trade routes open, and make the world more humane in times of crisis.

More than 40,000 advocates, families, and allies are expected to gather nationwide on April 26 for the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) Angels Walk for Autism 2026, as calls intensify for the passage of a long-pending autism bill in Congress.

The annual walk, set at 7 a.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and in key cities across the country, has become one of the largest platforms for advancing autism inclusion, bringing together communities to push for concrete policy action.

Advocates say the proposed legislation aims to institutionalize access to services, strengthen coordinated support systems, and ensure lifelong inclusion for Filipinos on the autism spectrum, estimated at 1 in 100 nationwide.

However, at least 26 counterpart measures remain pending at the House Committee on Health.

“The government has made strides for the disability sector, but there remains an opportunity to further strengthen public services for the autism community. Filipinos on the spectrum and their families will benefit from responsive systems and policies that promote acceptance, provide meaningful accommodations, and celebrate their strengths, enabling them to fully thrive,” said Mona Magno-Veluz, National Spokesperson of the ASP.

“We need a government with a plan to address the needs of our growing and aging community, from the national government to the LGUs,” she added.

Organized in partnership with SM Cares, the nationwide walk will span Metro Manila, Bacolod, Baguio, Butuan, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Lipa, Lucena, Olongapo, Tuguegarao, and Virac, highlighting both awareness and action.

Advocates stress that inclusion must translate into tangible opportunities — through accessible education, meaningful employment, and stronger collaboration between public and private sectors.

“It is important to sustain efforts that improve the well-being of Filipinos on the autism spectrum,” said Engr. Junias Eusebio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Operations.

“Working hand in hand with the government and organizations like the ASP, we build disability-inclusive spaces and make equitable employment possible so those on the spectrum can thrive,” Eusebio said.

Actress and advocate Michelle Dee underscored the need for sustained support systems that empower families and individuals on the spectrum.

“Responsive autism policy strengthens families by reducing everyday barriers. It shifts the narrative from dependence to empowerment — equipping families with the tools, opportunities, and dignity,” said Dee, ASP’s Goodwill Ambassador.

“Inclusion means making sure they are seen, supported, and not left to do this alone,” she added.

Since its launch in 2000, the ASP Angels Walk has evolved from an awareness campaign into a nationwide movement for inclusion and policy reform.

“Since it began in 2000, the ASP Angels Walk for Autism has always carried hope,” said ASP Chair Emerita Dang Koe. “But hope must evolve into — not just awareness or acceptance — but action.”

I’ve read with bitter contempt how farmers are affected by this crisis — and the anger sits heavy because the facts are as plain as they are unforgiving.

In Benguet, a Reuters story carried by an online news organization recounts how farmers like Romeo leave their vegetable crops to rot. And all because the math of cost and profit no longer makes sense.

When it costs P18 to P20 to produce a kilo of cabbage and the farmgate price collapses to as low as P3 — even P5 to P8 on a “good” day — harvesting becomes an act of self-sabotage. Add to that the surge in fuel prices, itself a ripple from conflict in the Middle East, and the math turns cruel: labor, hauling, packaging — all rising, all eating into nothing.

So farmers stop. Buyers pull back. Consumers, squeezed by inflation, shift to cheaper, filling alternatives. And just like that, a food chain buckles from both ends.

This is why the Department of Agriculture’s fuel subsidy, finally rolling out this April, is not just welcome — it is necessary, justified spending. It promises P5,000 for farmers, P3,000 for fisherfolk, alongside a broader P10-billion cash aid program covering over 4 million beneficiaries, which is the kind of intervention that recognizes a basic truth: You cannot expect food security from producers who are bleeding.

During the Holy Week, I’ve heard of Catholic devotees trimming their Visita Iglesia routes, choosing churches closer to one another, even walking the distance, just to save on fuel. Quiet sacrifice and real adjustments are lived by Pinoys these days, knowing inflation bites, and soon the cost of food will be the bigger scourge.

Hopefully, those in government, so fond of long motorcades and frequent travel, might consider the same discipline. If meetings can be held online, perhaps they should be — stay at home, if you can’t travel without your exaggerated security convoy.

Spending should be back where it should be — with the farmers. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. says the government is doing more: mobilizing trucks to move produce, securing cheaper fertilizers, expanding Kadiwa outlets, fast-tracking farm-to-market roads, and post-harvest facilities. These are the right moves, at least on paper.

But more should be done by those in power who never tilled land nor brought crops to market. Local governments in agricultural provinces must now do the unglamorous work: Connect farmers to these subsidies, ensure the aid reaches the fields, not just the reports. This is taxpayers’ money — it must land where the pain is.

This crisis is already punishing enough without fuel. But to fail in producing our own food — in a world where supply chains are strained and imports uncertain — would be a deeper scandal.

The government must work doubly hard. And if it does — truly, decisively — perhaps this moment becomes something more than a crisis. Perhaps it becomes some form of redemption. Yes, even for Marcos Junior.

*         *         *
